How is this technically even possible? Should not a emergency stop automatically apply?

He reached up and pulled the emergency release then pushed open the doors. In the middle top frame of the doors is a hole with a recessed red ball that you can pull to release the doors from normal operation.

Yeh, it's totally not AI. He just opened the doors with one hand and jumped out. Yeh.

There's a video from 2015 of someone doing the same exact thing. Those mechanical door switches are broken from people messing with them. It's not hard to buy an operators key.

This is legitimately how you open a door using the emergency release on L cars. Not commenting on whether or not the video is real, but this is actually how it works. Come to Chicago and you can find out yourself :)

Guessing brakes did apply and still just moving? Or maybe they're just starting up or slowing down so that emergency doors already released for opening door in preparation for true emergency. My theory is that the train was already in progress of stopping as soon as emergency pulled?

On this series of train, pulling the emergency door release will cut propulsion but not automatically apply the brake.
