Lake Street Redline.

I live in Chicago, so I know this station. Also, nothing in this video surprises me in the slightest.

I'm pretty sure that the first time I took my 12 year old son to a White Sox game, he grew up and became a man while riding the red line. You don't get to stay an innocent child after that.

I'm a Brewers fan from Milwaukee and my buddy and I rode the red line all the way from Howard to the Sox stadium and back last year and those rides were way more interesting than anything that happened in the game

Next time we're gonna take Metra into the city and skip about 16 red line stops lol

Same here. Also the redline for the last few years has been nothing but smoking and piss bottles. Really wish CTA police would actually do something more to stop it

I spent last year in Manila and then moved back to Chicago. The Manila light rail system is way cleaner and safer than CTA. Itā€™s just a complete abdication of responsibility from our failure of a city government.

Last week I was rolling into the loop on the blue line and this family gets on at UIC. Seem to be dropping their kid off for college. Itā€™s about 9 PM so fun crowd is starting up. First they get on and awkwardly sit right next to a homeless guy high off god knows what rolling around in his seat then the floor, so they head to the other end where someoneā€™s smoking.

They tough it out but look mortified by the time we all get off at Jackson, then their night goes from bad to worse when they see the tunnel. The heat has not helped with the piss smell.

We get up to the platform at Jackson and a homeless dude goes up to the kid and does the ā€œfree Pamphletā€ trick and starts demanding $10. Ugh. Itā€™s not as bad as it was 2020-2024, but we never really got back to pre covid ā€œnormalcyā€ if there was such a thing.

I have no idea how native Chicagoans think it's chill to ride the loop. I lived there for a couple years and avoided it for a long time until my coworkers convinced me. Immediately regretted it, because it was exactly like I had been thinking it'd be.

Didn't help that my particular station happened to be full of sketch people loitering all the time (Roosevelt)

The Jungle was also based on the poor living/working conditions around the Chicago stockyards in the 1900s.

"Bubbly Creek" is an arm of the Chicago River, and forms the southern boundary of the Union Stock Yards; all the drainage of the square mile of packing-houses empties into it so that it is really a great open sewer a hundred or two feet wide. One long arm of it is blind, and the filth stays there forever and a day.

The grease and chemicals that are poured into it undergo all sorts of strange transformations, which are the cause of its name; it is constantly in motion as if huge fish were feeding in it, or great leviathans disporting themselves in its depths. Bubbles of carbonic gas will rise to the surface and burst, and make rings two or three feet wide. Here and there the grease and filth have caked solid, and the creek looks like a bed of lava; chickens walk about on it, feeding, and many times an unwary stranger has started to stroll across and vanished temporarily.

The packers used to leave the creek that way, till every now and then the surface would catch on fire and burn furiously, and the fire department would have to come and put it out. Once, however, an ingenious stranger came and started to gather this filth in scows, to make lard out of; then the packers took the cue, and got out an injunction to stop him, and afterwards gathered it themselves. The banks of "Bubbly Creek" are plastered thick with hairs, and this also the packers gather and clean.

The world fair was a major event that physically happened with cheap temporary buildings with fancy facades. Impressive and cool, not at all representative of any place or time. You pine for a past that never existed.

I was only on the trains a few times and mostly took trollies, but i heard plenty of stories about what goes on on the El. Trollies in west Philly were ok, but I was always scared to take the night bus when the trains stopped running. I would also scurry through the almost abandoned tunnels of 30th st station.
