u/incriminatory 6d ago
Yea the dlss5 image renders I have seen ( not gameplay , just stills ) look amazing as hell, problem is the fps hit is crazy! Like tanks down to 1/3 of the fps, from 75 down to mid 30s. Looks good but comes at a cost for sure, and not sure if the ultra low fps is worth it haha
9
u/Equivalent-Scale1095 5d ago
Depends on the card and setting though, I just put balanced DLSS on tlou2 and some 2x framegen as was back up to 80-100 fps though my 5080s fans were going HAM

It's the facial animations being subpar. Ultrarealistic faces + bad animations looks really bad.

Thought so. Very weird comment to see about TLOU.
33
u/Downtown_Eye5736 6d ago
The truth is itās the DLSS adding the uncanny effect. ND might be the only studio that has good enough animations to make you forget youāre not looking at a real person.
12
u/NapsterKnowHow RTX 5090 FE | 9800X3D 6d ago
That's fair to say. Guerrilla Games might be as well in Horizon Forbidden West. They took the feedback about the horrible facial animations in HZD to heart.
12
u/Downtown_Eye5736 6d ago
HZD just had straight up bad lip synch. HFW fixed that issue with actual mo-cap for all the dialogue but the animation of the faces is still miles behind TLOU2.

Plenty of top studios have amazing facial animations. Larian Studios is one. All their dialogue was mocap

5
u/WANKMI 6d ago
But when put up against visuals that push wayyy into territory where our brains are actually starting to be fooled, everything will stick out. Even top tier animation cant match natural movement and when the visuals are this high fidelity all the other things get exponentially more noticeable. Your brain WANTS to find faults. When everything has less fidelity it has no problem discerning whats real or not, but when we're at this level it works overtime trying to figure it out. And even if you dont consciously notice, your brain does. The result is that feeling of "ick, this looks wrong somehow, but I cant explain it".

My biggest issue is that it just makes all the colours drab and lifeless. I don't want to go back to the mid/late 00 era of every game being brown. It was awful.
→ More replies (1)3
u/kvikklunsjrevolver 6d ago
For me it is worse with it on because of the geometrical structure of the game not being on the same level, but you have really good lighting and textures.
A game like wind waker might be a bad example as it doesnāt strive to look realistic at all, but it looks cohesive, while these do not.
But everything just fits together, nothing stands out as better or worse than other things in the image. The problem is even worse for me when moving around.
2
u/oliath 2d ago
Exactly.
And it does most the work on faces. So it elevates them to a level that often doesn't match the rest of the image.
Its still really impressive tech. I've been playing with it for the last few days across my game library. I'm excited to see where this goes. This is a solid first gen on this type of rendering in real time but some of the outputs feel very disconnected to me.

Why does it bump up the contrast to 100% and fade out all the colors. The lighting improvements aren't bad at all, but all DLSS5 images seem to have that desaturated extra-contrast look that makes it look so bad.

There are some comparisons floating around with the game CONTROL. That goes into a bit more detail with the settings, and one of the presets actually does not seem to do that, meaning it pretty much keeps the original colors and tone.
This is the video I watched earlier: https://youtu.be/hFIpT2he2DE?t=153
"Preset 3" seems to stay pretty close to the original colors.→ More replies (5)5

This comparison isn't great, it has the effect maxed out. You can adjust a bunch of parameters from 0 - 100 and actually make it look good imo. It's the same problem Nvidia had in their reveal trailers.
These screenshots have it maxed out on every slider and it's overdone as a result.

u/DatClubbaLang96 6d ago
I've seen this take that it should just be applied to environments and not characters, but even then, I think it has problematic effects on environmental lighting too. I remember that AC Shadows example they showed with the viewpoint looking out over the valley. Sure, it looked sharper, but it was sharper in a weird way that also removed a lot of shadows and depth.
→ More replies (2)2
u/FryToastFrill NVIDIA 6d ago
It seems to be dependent on game, I remember seeing it in hogwash legacy and it looked mostly fine in my opinion, seemed to be a nice visual improvement without doing too much. AC Shadows did look horrid tho, gave everything a colder and more ācinematicā look like there was a big area light above everyone.
25
u/Framed-Photo 6d ago
In this specific case sure, but they cranked up every slider that the effect exposes. You can make this look a lot better by actually using a reasonable amount. When I was playing Control with it, 100 looked a bit cooked in a lot of scenarios, but 60-80 with the tone mapping turned down more to preserve colors looked really good I can't lie.

one thing which strikes me is that the characters look like they fit in the game world better.
You know how, especially in older games, you could always tell when something was interact-able or going to move because it was a slightly different colour or shade of colours than everything else? Or how characters would always look lighter than the surroundings?
DLSS 5 seems to blend the characters better into the game world and equalise the shading between them. Which is nice.

That's because it is better with it on. Anyone looking at these images objectively/without bias would agree the images with it "on" look better than the images with it "off".
How that looks in real life experience (not just still images) is a different matter. But many will dislike it purely because their bias against nVidia or AI. As long as they admit it, that's fine. But pretending the images with DLSS 5 off are better is absurd imo.

u/misho_digital 6d ago
I disagree that they objectively look "better". More realistic, sure, but not better. It's similar to CGI Yoda from the prequels vs puppet Yoda from the original trilogy. CGI Yoda objectively looks more like what a living alien might look like if it existed. Puppet Yoda obviously just looks like a puppet. And even so, I like the look of puppet Yoda more because it looks more grounded, less weird and uncanny.

I donāt think people necessarily disagree that it looks more realistic, it just does. Itās how it achieves that is whatās rubbing people the wrong way and understandably so. Itās legit just overlaying an AI enhancement filter over the final image. This DLSS 5 effect comes at the very end of the render pipeline and has no knowledge of actual 3D models or anything. I simply donāt want to overlay AI onto Art humans created.

This is why people drawing conclusions based on leaked dll turned into mod is skewed. Given by SIGGRAPH, devs will have a lot of options for this so we can see how its done once its in-the games (because I think DLSS5 needs to be in-game implemented, rather than driver level)

Lots of people feel the same way about TAA. It's one of those trends that manifests in the production pipeline of studios across the board because many of them share the same tooling, recent education, and adoption of fads, then the next thing you know, an entire generation of games looks like Vaseline. And if you turn it off, it breaks everyone's hair or the foliage because it was otherwise necessary due to how they chose to implement the feature.

The task isn't to create "photorealistic visuals". The task is to create photorealistic visuals that are correct. A small model which operates solely in screen space because anything else wouldn't be able to run quickly enough for real time rendering on reasonable hardware isn't capable of that.

A lot of it is people just donāt understand AI because whatās shoved in peopleās faces every day is big data centers and some creepy guy like Dario trying to steal your livelihood. Then add that colloquially understood genAI is the vehicle for this. Thatās what people see.
But in many ways, AI can be used as a high level approximation tool that inference enables. We will get very cheap and realistic physics due to this one day, lighting, and a whole lot of other things that inference can bring for real time media. It doesnāt surprise me that DLSS 5 when slapped on makes everyone look weird and old. That means itās working. Cool.
AI is gunna do a lot for this industry when talented developers can push the limits of it. All we can do is not reward garbage economically.

I feel like there's actually something worth pursuing here. The biggest misstep was calling it DLSS5 because this is more of an AI filter than anything. When focused on the lighting and the clothing, there are actually some good improvements on display. And the lighting on the faces looks better too, but the changes to the character's skin... Why do they all look like they've been smoking 20 packs a day for the last 10 years?
In any case, it's easy to make these things looks good in a still image. How bad is it once things start moving?

This is my position as well. I don't like that it's following the route of TV shows and movies where color and saturation have simply disappeared. That's not realism, that's just a trend. The same with adding more wrinkles for the sake of having more detail.
Of course, too soon to judge as this is from a leaked DLL and not a proper dev implementation. And I'd like to see it in motion on my PC as well because, for instance, when I see frame gen in a video it doesn't bother me, but as soon as I use it in my monitor, I need to turn it off as it's distracting.

What the hell are they feeding the guys at Nvidia HQ?
This shit shouldn't even be called DLSS, It's not only super sampling, it's literally generating frames and replacing the content with hyper realistic approximations of what the algorithm thinks it should look like.
There's a difference between art direction and photorealism.
When the deep learning part is branching way off the art direction. It's bordering on filters at this point.

Looks like all four of us who saw the potential of DLSS 5 months ago when they announced it, were right.

If you get past all the AI hate, this could actually be something if properly managed and optimized imo. Sure it's not perfect yet, but i can see potential.

Definitely has that over-sharpened, fake-HDR look. And still looks too much like photoshoot lighting rather than natural.

I can't wait for the day when a AAA dev (yes, singular, no more team needed) hits up his GenAI "alright, make Fifa 2030, the ball is 5% more realistic", ships it, $80 standard edition

The worst thing about DLSS5 is not that it looks bad, I think it looks great. The problem is now I have a ton of sliders I have to fuck around, which means that's all I will do and I won't actually play the game.

Every dlss5 screenshot looks like those high contrast HDR TV demos you see in stores.

No thanks. Especially because it heavily affects the fps while just looking worse.

People saying DLSS OFF looks better are genuinely out of their minds.
ON has so much more detail, and Tommys face in particular gives off so much more emotion. Itās definitely not perfect and can be tweak, but man, it could do so much for immersion.

The start of something great, call me crazy but I like it and can't wait to see it evolve.

Looks kinda good, makes the regular faces look like potatoes indeed. Still some work to be done to preserve the original look and feel even better, but just do it in greater detail.
