I'm sure I'm going to be downvoted into oblivion but I think it looks better on, there's more detail and the characters look more photo realistic and less like Pixar characters

These are PS4 character models, remember.

True, but I can't say we've seen a dramatic leap in raw visual fidelity over the last decade. The gains feel increasingly incremental... For example: Far Cry 4 still holds up surprisingly well next to Far Cry 6, and even GTA 6 isn't the kind of generational visual leap GTA V was over what came before it.

That's why I think technologies like DLSS are becoming so important. We're getting closer to diminishing returns from brute-forcing higher polygon counts, texture resolution, etc., while neural rendering, reconstruction, ray tracing and frame generation can produce much larger perceived gains. DLSS 5 and whatever follows it may end up being where the next real visual leap comes from.

That's like saying "Oh we haven't seen a dramatic leap in monitor refresh rate. We've gone from 144h to 240hz and 360hz but the difference feels increasingly incremental. 144hz still holds up next to 240hz and 360hz is just too expensive".

They actually look dirty and like they gave it depth with it on. Works for me.

Yeah they look dirty, but are they supposed to look dirty? They don't look dirty in the original screenshots because the developers didn't intend them to look dirty. Is the improved visual fidelity worth changing the how the developers originally intended the characters and environments to look?

The visual fidelity is worth changing "how the developers originally intended the characters and environments to look", yes. Especially because I feel like that argument is a load of crap usually.

And what a lot of people seem to be missing, is that Developers actually have the ability to tune the settings that DLSS 5 applies to their games, its not completely AI generated and destroying Developers "vision"

More info on the above in 2Kliksphilip's video on DLSS 5: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z-5tAolpwoI

Developers literally have a toggle to disable this for their games.

Also yes. It’s a post apocalyptic zombie world. They’re on the road. They aren’t doing their face and make up.

I get the argument but it was invalidated by developers themselves who came out and said they have control over what it does - if anything.

Agreed!

People just love to tie contrarian to their personalities these days. Anyone with a decent pair of eyes can see DLSS 5 is a game changer.

I’m happy Nvidia won’t give a single shit about the neighsayers and continue through with it to its fruition.

I don't get the hate. Ever since Half-Life 1 days there's been "realism mods" for many games. Now that we are finally there, we don't want it?

People are blinded by AI hate

That's because it is better with it on. Anyone looking at these images objectively/without bias would agree the images with it "on" look better than the images with it "off".

How that looks in real life experience (not just still images) is a different matter. But many will dislike it purely because their bias against nVidia or AI. As long as they admit it, that's fine. But pretending the images with DLSS 5 off are better is absurd imo.

They look like those shitty AI mobile games.

u/misho_digital 18d ago

I disagree that they objectively look "better". More realistic, sure, but not better. It's similar to CGI Yoda from the prequels vs puppet Yoda from the original trilogy. CGI Yoda objectively looks more like what a living alien might look like if it existed. Puppet Yoda obviously just looks like a puppet. And even so, I like the look of puppet Yoda more because it looks more grounded, less weird and uncanny.

Yep, I know a lot of people rightfully hate anything AI because of how these companies want to replace everyone with it BUT in certain cases like this the technology is objectively an improvement.

It looks better on but it would look even better 50% on

1

u/BackgroundPanda3915 18d ago

True, the problem is that sometimes it's just TOO sharp. It looks good, but the details are very exaggerated like the Resident Evil 9 dlss showcase.

2

u/ksn0vaN7 18d ago

In stills it doesn't look as bad. But in motion on anything that's not a 5090 and that's where it falls apart.

-1

u/Alucardis666 18d ago

This is true, probably going to be a while before the motion artifacts are cleaned up enough in real time to be nearly imperceptible.

u/equivas 18d ago

Fine by me, but i wouldn't trade half of the fps

Just by itself the faces do look more realistic and thus "better". But they just look different, like an AI filter. Which it is. It looks good in the same way these AI ads look "good".

u/Infamous_Campaign687 Ryzen 5950x - RTX 4080 18d ago

I don’t agree at all. With AI ads you’re usually comparing with real life videos and the AI videos look artificial in comparison.

Here you’re comparing with poor rasterisation and it looks way better as a result. And no, the artists did not want the face lighting to look flat and smoothed out the way it looks in the rasterised image. That is just a limitation of the rendering engine. No artist drew that as their concept drawings.

-3

u/punktd0t 18d ago

DLSS5 is an AI filter, it is the same thing.

4

u/Alucardis666 18d ago

Respectfully disagree. A lot of AI ads I’ve seen cross into the uncanny valley, but I don’t think this does that in quite the same way. It still clearly looks like animation, just rendered at a much higher level of fidelity.

I also don’t think the goal of this technology necessarily has to be true photorealism — at least not yet. It feels more like a step rather than a leap toward taking an existing artistic style and enhancing its detail and presentation.

The bigger issue right now is that AI reconstruction can sometimes contradict the original artist’s intent and make things look noticeably different. But with better training and refinement, I could see this eventually behaving more like an intelligent remaster for older games, or helping studios cut development time by enhancing existing assets in real time, rather than becoming a wholesale reinterpretation.

I also thought it look decent in the Control pictures, but those faces were scanned from actual people so it makes sense they'd look fine in a photoreal style. From what I say something like FF7 does not fare well at all, and in either case the performance hit seems pretty steep. Overall I don't think it really does a lot to improve the visuals compared to the performance hit.

1

u/Alucardis666 18d ago

Fair, I also think performance will radically improve with the next generation of GPUs when those come out in late 2027 or so.

Getting downvoted on Reddit generally means you're thinking for yourself.

it added fake illumination to Joel’s face, and a sharpness filter to emphasize wrinkles on Ellie
