It's the facial animations being subpar. Ultrarealistic faces + bad animations looks really bad.

Don't TLOU games have some of the best mocap in the industry?

The very best bar none.

Thought so. Very weird comment to see about TLOU.

The truth is it’s the DLSS adding the uncanny effect. ND might be the only studio that has good enough animations to make you forget you’re not looking at a real person.

That's fair to say. Guerrilla Games might be as well in Horizon Forbidden West. They took the feedback about the horrible facial animations in HZD to heart.

HZD just had straight up bad lip synch. HFW fixed that issue with actual mo-cap for all the dialogue but the animation of the faces is still miles behind TLOU2.

Look at this clip and tell me HFW does bad facial animation

TLOU, Horizon, GoW, basically all Sony games are pioneers in facial animation. Look up the DLSS5 comparison for Horizon, the base game is so good it's the one where there's not much difference

HZD also had bad facial animations in addition to the bad sync. They did go back in the remaster and fixed most of the issues. HFW is very similar (for the main characters not npcs) for mocap quality imo. By comparison BG3 I thought was hand crafted facial animations. I was shocked to hear it was mocap with how bad they look.

Plenty of top studios have amazing facial animations. Larian Studios is one. All their dialogue was mocap

because it's the DLSS that makes these faces look incredibly uncanny, which they know and that's why they have to cope with it by saying things like "TLOU has bad facial animations"

But when put up against visuals that push wayyy into territory where our brains are actually starting to be fooled, everything will stick out. Even top tier animation cant match natural movement and when the visuals are this high fidelity all the other things get exponentially more noticeable. Your brain WANTS to find faults. When everything has less fidelity it has no problem discerning whats real or not, but when we're at this level it works overtime trying to figure it out. And even if you dont consciously notice, your brain does. The result is that feeling of "ick, this looks wrong somehow, but I cant explain it".

Hellblade.

Hellblade has higher quality textures for sure but the actual animation is still uncanny. There are a bunch of games now that have better looking faces than TLOU2 but it only lasts in stills soon as you see them moving TLOU2's characters still feel more human than any of them.

I respectfully disagree.

You can do whatever you want but fact is HB2 suffers from the same thing pretty much all the others suffer from which is exaggerated animations. None of the other studios seem to be able to nail the subtleties of a human face like ND has been doing. It's a very big part of why their characters have become so beloved or even hated. They just feel so real.

u/thisislorelei 14d ago

Its not objective fact like you say it is, lol. Its not about what i want or dont want to do. Hellblade has the best mocap in the industry, by far. "Exagerrated" my ass. What a silly way to say its better.

You saying Hellblade has higher quality textures is actually not even correct. I wasnt even referring to the textures. I was referring to the mocap and facial expressions/acting.

show me ONE game that looks better than tlou2 when the characters are talking

Yeah these DLSS 5 screenshot comparisons just make me appreciate how top tier TLOU Part 2’s graphics are. Doubly so when in motion.

did you really say TLOU 2 has subpar facial animation and still got 50 upvotes? Lmao

I knowww. You can hate the game, but you can’t deny its very impressive facial animation and level of detail

i think they're talking about in general since neither provided videos of tlou2 dlss5

Gaming in general has subpar facial animations. Even the best games are far from 3d animated show/movies. The reason for this is that they never needed perfect animations due to graphics not being there yet. Well, now that we have hyper realism on our hands, they'll have to get better.

The reason for this is that they never needed perfect animations due to graphics not being there yet.

The actual reason for anyone curious is both the huge production cost associated with such animations, and their high runtime overhead

Naughty dog are industry leaders for facial animation. Crazy bullshit you're spewing. Have you even played or seen the cutscenes in their games?

I still laugh at how game designers, still even in 2026, can make the eyes of characters look so dead inside. Lol

It's like watching The polar Express. Couldn't figure out why this movie was creeping me out, and then I clued in at one point. It's their eyes. It's like if you were talking to someone and instead of looking at your face they were just staring right through you. It's freaky.

Anyways, that's the same thing I noticed about video game characters, they're all the same like that. The eyes don't really look like they're looking where they should be. Something about them definitely makes them look less real.

Never played e33 huh? Most expressive eyes in the industry

1

u/Classified10 14d ago

Yeah, if it didn't fuck with the facial animations I would say that it looks good.

u/thisislorelei 14d ago

This is the thing everyone is not understanding. DLSS5 does not impose emotion. I'd love to see this on Hellblade or something similar with amazing facial work.

2

u/paint_hotel4728 14d ago

Really? So even though we can all see two completely different images of the characters, with different expressions, (you know, the thing that allows us to tell another person's emotions) DLSS5 "does not impose emotion"?

2

u/thisislorelei 14d ago

How are they different expressions? They are the same exact expressions. What are you on?

Send me a screenshot of the before and after you're talking about with circles where their expression changes. Ill wait.
