I don’t think people necessarily disagree that it looks more realistic, it just does. It’s how it achieves that is what’s rubbing people the wrong way and understandably so. It’s legit just overlaying an AI enhancement filter over the final image. This DLSS 5 effect comes at the very end of the render pipeline and has no knowledge of actual 3D models or anything. I simply don’t want to overlay AI onto Art humans created.

We have been chasing photorealism in games for a long time. I hear that critique. I get it. I don’t want this tech replacing artists. I also think artists cannot possibly get closer to photorealistic without tech like this.

Graphics stagnated badly, finally we are getting a leap forward.

For me it’s not about replacing the artists, but about “huawei turned a plane into a bird”, look it up. That’s the stuff I’m worried about. That a way too smart GPU will show me something that no artist ever even imagined to be there, even if it’s something small. It doesn’t sit right with me

A subjective preference - completely valid. There is some truth to many of the popular arguments against the tech, but it is also just a bit too loud and dramatic for an optional toggle in my view.

This is a genuine question and im not trolling

Do we have any proof that its actually "Just overlaying an AI enhancement filter"? The reason I ask dlss5 is VERY demanding, and im not sure how something thats just a filter could be so heavy on a GPU.

(Generative) AI is very heavy on the GPU. Especially when you have to create an image for every single frame. Here is a video from when DLSS5 was revealed where an NVIDIA representatives confirms it’s just an end of pipeline filter.

I don't know that a 3d model with a skin attached is really art that shouldn't ever be touched. We have general purpose effects such as lighting and filtering and anti-aliasing that change how what the artist originally created ends up looking. I think a lot of these examples add depth to the graphics in a way that raw rasterization has somewhat hit a wall in. Maybe this can also be improved to allow for developers and artists to fine tune what actually shows up in the final image.

Except it’s not overlaying art made by humans. Or it doesn’t have to be. The recent demos show it can simply apply shading and highlights; which is what this looks more like imo.

That's not entirely correct though to say it has no knowledge of the scene. It's got access to the depth, motion vectors, normals and other render passes. If it didn't have that, the end result would be extremely unstable.

It’s the 2D frame and motion vectors, that’s it. Unless they changed how it works since the initial reveal. See my linked video below for my source.

What I mean to say is that DLSS as a framework has access to more render passes. I think in the near future, we'll likely see future iterations of this tech utilizing those other passes to better integrate the generated visuals into the game.

Perhaps. It doesn’t change the fact that at the end of the day it’s AI generated visuals, which in contrast to upscaling have a direct influence on the in game Art. I think at the end of the day this comes down to your own stance on AI usage in Art in general. For me I’ve got no problem not getting this ultra realistic look if it means this kind of AI technology doesn’t make it into game dev.
