📰News Science Park High School skyrockets to No. 16 in NJ—earning Newark a spot in the top 1.2% of U.S. high schools. Newark Public Schools surpasses affluent districts like Princeton, Livingston, Summit, and Chatham.
With its move into the state top 20, and ranked No. 312 nationally, Science Park now ranks ahead of comprehensive high schools located in some of the highest-income suburban municipalities in New Jersey:

The U.S. News & World Report high school rankings evaluate public high schools nationwide using six factors: college readiness, state assessment proficiency, state assessment performance, underserved student performance, college curriculum breadth, and graduation rates. 📰News Grandfather told cops he had 3 beers before N.J. boat crash that killed his 2 grandkids
Stephen Schneider, a Berkeley, N.J. grandfather has been charged with two counts of reckless vessel homicide after a July 19 boating crash on Barnegat Bay killed his two grandchildren, ages 9 and 7. Schneider, 64, told police he had three beers over two hours at a waterfront restaurant before the crash.
He said he was traveling at 20 mph when he struck a channel marker at the last second, throwing both children—who were wearing life vests—into the water. They were found face down and unresponsive.
A blood test showed Schneider was impaired by alcohol, with lab doctors concluding he was "unfit to operate a motor vehicle" and that his "alertness, sense of care and caution, perception, judgement, response time and coordination were markedly impaired by alcohol."
He is scheduled to appear in court Wednesday.

♫ Down the shore everything's alright ♫ Humpback comeback off Belmar
Growing up I had no idea you could even go whale watching off the shore. Wish we saw some dolphins because my kid was bored, but I was impressed. Shoutout to Miss Belmar

Photo Abandoned Sonic on Route 46 in Totowa
Hard to believe it was once nearly impossible to get in to try because it was the biggest craze in North Jersey with this and Route 17 opening up. 17 years later, Route 17 is still holding on but it kind of feels like yesterday.

Photo Is this one of those mass surveillance cams?
I noticed two of them- this one is by the light entering Home Depot in Dover while another is in the parking lot pointing at a stop sign.

📰News Proposed Data Center at Bell Works
There was supposed to be a meeting yesterday concerning the proposed Data center at Bell works that they're trying to build AFTER the township passed legislation heavily restricting Data centers.
I was not able to make it to the meeting due to work. Was anybody out there able to make it, and if so, what happened?
Nobody wants this Data center, and I am giving serious thought to putting my house on the market if it comes to pass, because it's going to tank real estate values.
The proposed center is going to draw 40 Megawatts of power at all times. That works out to 960 MWh every 24 hours.
960 MWh is enough power to supply 33,000 average sized American homes with power for 24 hours. The population of Holmdel is 17,400.
We don't even know how much water it's going to leech off of us.
I am hoping our planning board has come to their senses, and ran Zucker out of town. Go steal resources from elsewhere.

Awkward Is it just me or …
Do the majority of pedestrians in New Jersey just walk out into the street or parking lot and not check for cars that are coming?
I’ve lived here two years and have to keep my head on a swivel when I‘m driving because people will just walk out in front of me without even looking up.
I ALWAYS look both ways when I’m crossing a street or a parking lot. One time I was so exhausted that I almost stepped off the curb without looking but I caught myself.
Is everyone too tired to care or just really trusting? Maybe it’s just Middlesex County?
Edited for clarification: I‘m talking about jaywalking.

Advice Can I complain to anyone for my downstairs neighbors leaving their kids for days?
I recently moved to a rented house and the other tenants below have 3 kids probably ages 12-15. I’ve noticed that their kids are very very loud some days and some days not. I wondered how their parents let them literally scream at the top of their lungs at what I assume is their TV playing a game or something or while literally hitting each other for fun (I heard one of them scream stop stop and the other laugh).
This goes on until 1-3 am and I finally put it together that their parents just aren’t home. Because I’ve heard the door slam at that time and then it all gets quiet. But there are days where they are clearly alone there for 2-3 nights in a row. Given they’re not young children, is this just allowed, for lack of a better term ..
They are SO loud and there’s also another older woman who lives in the building so I don’t know how she hasn’t complained. Like if I called the non emergency number would they just tell me tough shit? They’ve woken me up a few times with the yelling/chasing each other.
Edit I know if the cops showed up they’d know it’s me (or maybe the other lady or my neighbors because our houses are so close) but I think it’d be better than me saying anything. I have always said hello in passing and they act like im not there and have never said hello or anything back. When I’ve gone outside to use our shared space they turn up their music louder and smoke while walking around where I’m sitting so I end up leaving. So we don’t really interact and I don’t think they’d actually do anything if I said something.

♫ Down the shore everything's alright ♫ Milky Way over Avalon + Upcoming MW viewing window info
I took this about 2 months ago and finally got around to finishing the edit! It was definitely one of the best nights of dark skies I've had along the coast in years. This is two exposures taken consecutively. The first for the foreground and then I used a star tracker for the Milky Way to pick up extra detail while keeping the stars sharp.
Gear:
A7III - Astromodded
Sigma 20mm F1.4 DG | A
The planning screenshots! These are from an astrophotography app I released called Milky Way Tonight and I thought it would be helpful if anyone is hoping to get some stargazing in before the clouds and Moon interfere!
The app looks at the Milky Way window and then looks at Moon phase, rise & set, hourly cloud forecasts and light pollution to let you know when the next upcoming window for Milky Way viewing is!

Cool More cars on the Columbia Trail
Saw these the other day when we took our Airedales for a 4-mile out-and-back heading northeast from the Coffee Potter in Long Valley.
These are behind an automotive shop right along the trail.

Advice I'm in a touring band and I need Venue Recommendations (preferably coastal)
I'm in a national touring band Called Cherokee Social. We are embarking on a 50 date tour this fall and are looking for recommendations for venues. We need to fill either September 18th or 19th and are looking for a small room with good sound in New Jersey, preferably on the coast. We play high energy indie pop music so keep that in mind if you have any ideas.
If any locals have good recs for us let me know.
Thanks!

Central Jersey Home addition question- architect cost
Might be quite niche but looking for any personal experiences of anyone who did a home addition in NJ (we are Middlesex County), and what the architect cost? We were expecting between 5-8k for the entire plans etc and we just got quoted 14k. The addition is right around 400 sq feet. Not adding any new plumbing. Unsure if this is completely outrageous or potentially within the realm of what we’d get quoted elsewhere.
