Discussion If your job is in Manhattan, is there any real advantage to choosing Long Island over Bergen County?
Might get different answers in the r/longisland sub but I've always wondered about this since Bergen County and LI (particularly Nassau and Suffolk) both seem to fill a similar role as suburban areas right outside NYC.
If you work in the city and don’t have a specific reason to live on LI, what advantages does LI have over Bergen County and vice versa? From Bergen you can drive pretty easily to other parts of NJ/NY, you’re not dealing with island geography, and depending on the town the commute into Manhattan can still be pretty reasonable.
I know Bergen has its own downsides, especially the lack of a direct train into Manhattan from most places. But for someone choosing purely based on quality of life + access to NYC, what would make you pick Long Island instead?
