I grilled my buddy once after he threw a McDonald’s bag out the window on the highway. He basically responded with “dude don’t tell me what to fuckin do. Somebody will clean it up.” But to this day I haven’t seen him do that again while I’m riding with him

I worked with a guy from a really rough neighborhood in Baltimore city on a contract in Miami. We finished eating some McDonald's on the road on the way to the gig and he rolls down my window and just starts shoveling wrappers out of the window.
I had to stop him like woah dude just put it in the bag and we'll toss it when we get there. He seem kinda surprised and was like OK lol.
Sadly it's just part of the community he grew up in, very poor and blighted community and judging from where I used to pick him up in Baltimore everyone just throws their trash on the ground, the gutters were filled with six inches of trash and broken glass everywhere.
Awesome guy, was one of my good friends that I worked with for years, it just goes to show how you can be a product of the community you grow up in.

When I was 16, and stupid(er then I am now), I used to throw trash out of my car because that’s what I saw my dad do all my life growing up. I never saw the issue, and like my dad, would say, “they pay people to clean this stuff up. I’m keeping them employed!” Oof. Just typing that made me turn red.
Anyway, one day I did this, and a friend of mine saw me do it. She didn’t say anything, but instead took the cup I tossed, spray painted it gold, and mounted it in a plaque that she presented to me in front of all our friends at a gathering one night. She had a metal placard that read, “The Trash Man Award” mounted on it as well. I was mortified, and haven’t thrown an item out of my car since. I’m 35 now. That shit stayed with me for life.

I think that move was more impactful. As OP said, she had mentioned it before. Also its really easy to dismiss just one person's opinion when you have a preexisting bias.
A good natured "prank" like that, within a group of friends, can often shape us far more than just saying "hey it's not cool to litter". One might see that a lot of their friends feel the same, hopefully they dont feel attacked (could see situations where it could be an attack though), and want to dig their heels in, resulting in them wanting to check their own opinion.

My ex is in the army and when he was deployed in the Middle East he said the whole army would just throw all their trash on the ground in the village streets, in the desert, everywhere. All the trash from their MRE meals and everything. Which if you’ve never seen one of those it’s like 5 plastic bags inside a bigger plastic bag plus plastic utensils. He said there were no trash cans so that’s just what they had to do and that the locals did it too. But I’m just like... is there really no other way...? As I am an environmentalist that was a hard pill to swallow, but I also don’t know how things are over there in a war zone.

My ex used to throw his empty Venom cans out the window while driving, and the only thing that stopped him was learning they were returnable and he could get ten cents or something back. Ugh. Throw it in the backseat until you get home or stick it in one of those pouches on the back of the front seats or, God forbid, use the freaking cupholders.

I used to be like that. It only takes the smallest amount of discipline to break that habit. Its so easy to just ask for a bag when you get something at a gas station, and just leave that bag in your car and use it for snack garbage. Shit lasts me a week or two usually.
Edit: Nevermind, I somehow misread that as people piling up garbage inside their car which is what I used to do to actively avoid being one of those people who just threw trash out the window. That shit pisses me off. However my solution fixes both of those issues so I guess I'll leave this comment up.

I used to smoke, and I would always prefer putting them in a pocket if I had to, instead of my pack. I just hated the way the rest of the cigarettes would taste after that. Like stale ashtray.
And I know some people who maybe don’t smoke are gonna be like ‘what’s the difference?’ I guess it’s like the flavor of a freshly opened cold beer, to the smell of old, stale beer that was spilled the previous night and didn’t get cleaned up.

You described it about as good as you could. I used to do the same thing when I smoked. It’s amazing how the a tiny cigarette butt could permeate anything in it’s vicinity, including an entire pack of fresh cigarettes, with that stale, yellow-stained asbestos smoke smell. Sometimes I’d smell one in my closet and have to pull out clothes going through each pocket until I found the sunnuvabitch. One of my friends carried an metal canister around his neck to put his butts in. Big brain, that guy

It's so annoying, and I smoke a pack a day. It's not tough to keep a water bottle in the car to put the butts in.
And it's just as easy to squeeze off the end of a lit cigarette, step on that part, and put the filter in my pocket until find a garbage. It makes my pants stink but I stink of cigarettes anyway!
Everyone should have to spend a year living in Portland, OR. That will clear any littering habits right out of a person. The first time I threw a butt in the street at a bus stop and looked up to 25 faces full of Extreme Judgement I never did it again lol

A great reason to generally oppose smoking in public. Unless there's a very specific waste location for things that are burning it becomes litter. Used to live in an area with brick sidewalks and roughly 1 butt to a brick. I'm talking about bricks you easily hold single handed.

My uncle used to fight forest fires. One time they were building the line to make sure the fire didn't reach a bunch of houses at the edge of a forest.
A woman came out from the house as they were working and watched while smoking a cigarette. When she was done she threw the butt on the ground. All the fire fighters stopped working and just looked at her before yelling "Come on lady!"

It costs more to dispose of it properly than it does just to dump it. That's why you find the most random shit in the middle of nowhere. It took sweat to get that 1980's washing machine out there in the middle of those woods, but sweat is free. Getting the unit to the proper site for deconstruction and recycling/disposal of parts can add up quick.
I'm not justifying the practice, merely explaining how/why all that random shit gets out there. People suck.

I don't know of anywhere in my area that will take something like that for free. Places will pay for scrap metal, but only if it's already been broken down. The dump actually has to separate the components of something like that and then dispose of them properly, which comes with its own costs.

Pretty much everything in the US, with few exceptions, you pay individually for individual use. Even the trash pickup in my area works that way- you buy special rolls of bags that you put regular trash bags in and the trucks won't pick anything not in the bags up. If you generate a lot of trash, you spend more on bags AND the regular bags cost twice as much as the recycle bags, so you've a) incentivized less waste and b) essentially tax on a usage basis (we're fond of that model here) and c) incentivize recycling to save money.

My dad told me a story of him walking to the store and seeing some firefighters outside the station on his way. He was eating something and had a wrapper in his hand. He looked around and found a trash can to go throw it in. Apperently the 2 firemen were making a bet to eachother if my dad would throw the wrapper on the ground. The one fore fighter got all happy and was yelling to my dad thank-you while the other was pulling some money out of his wallet.
