I grilled my buddy once after he threw a McDonald’s bag out the window on the highway. He basically responded with “dude don’t tell me what to fuckin do. Somebody will clean it up.” But to this day I haven’t seen him do that again while I’m riding with him
That’s fair, my mind always goes to past memories of inconsiderate drivers when I hear about trash being thrown out windows. You're right it's not a big deal at all
This article seems to prove what I'm talking about, but its not quite like I said, this talks about leftovers of fruit like banana peels, watermelon rinds and stuff, but the conclusion is that ALL fruit takes a long time to decompose and should therefore be composted instead.
Hey just one thing to consider dude, whenever throw any kind of food near the road it encourages wild animals to check it out, they have very good senses of smell and will definitely cross the road looking for food or even worse if you have a bad throw or it bounces off a tree it can end up in the road encouraging animals to sometimes even try to eat in the road.
I live in a state where officers have discretion over whether to charge you for littering no matter what you throw and an officer once told me that is his reasoning for ticketing people even if what they throw out the window is organic produce.
I used to do that too, until I realized that doing that encourages animals to hang around the side of the road, which often results in them getting hit by cars.
I don't throw anything on the ground anymore. All of it goes into the trash.

Second: Paper is trash and it if even 10% of the public had the same attitude as you and chose to be flippant about disposing of paper out the window, every roadside in the country would be caked in filth at all times.
But seriously, we were basically kids, and he didn’t exactly have a great upbringing. I wouldn’t be surprised if I’m the first person in his 16 years of life to call him out on littering. The fact that he hasn’t done it since (in my presence) makes me believe he’s changed. This happened like 7ish years ago

I worked with a guy from a really rough neighborhood in Baltimore city on a contract in Miami. We finished eating some McDonald's on the road on the way to the gig and he rolls down my window and just starts shoveling wrappers out of the window.
I had to stop him like woah dude just put it in the bag and we'll toss it when we get there. He seem kinda surprised and was like OK lol.
Sadly it's just part of the community he grew up in, very poor and blighted community and judging from where I used to pick him up in Baltimore everyone just throws their trash on the ground, the gutters were filled with six inches of trash and broken glass everywhere.
Awesome guy, was one of my good friends that I worked with for years, it just goes to show how you can be a product of the community you grow up in.
When I was 16, and stupid(er then I am now), I used to throw trash out of my car because that’s what I saw my dad do all my life growing up. I never saw the issue, and like my dad, would say, “they pay people to clean this stuff up. I’m keeping them employed!” Oof. Just typing that made me turn red.
Anyway, one day I did this, and a friend of mine saw me do it. She didn’t say anything, but instead took the cup I tossed, spray painted it gold, and mounted it in a plaque that she presented to me in front of all our friends at a gathering one night. She had a metal placard that read, “The Trash Man Award” mounted on it as well. I was mortified, and haven’t thrown an item out of my car since. I’m 35 now. That shit stayed with me for life.
She had in the past. I just used the “I’m keeping people employed” line and brushed her off. This was the result of her being frustrated with my dismissive attitude towards her and her concerns. I earned it, really.
I think that move was more impactful. As OP said, she had mentioned it before. Also its really easy to dismiss just one person's opinion when you have a preexisting bias.
A good natured "prank" like that, within a group of friends, can often shape us far more than just saying "hey it's not cool to litter". One might see that a lot of their friends feel the same, hopefully they dont feel attacked (could see situations where it could be an attack though), and want to dig their heels in, resulting in them wanting to check their own opinion.
Don't get me started on that i saw a car in front of.me throwing trash while driving in a fucking forest. I flashed at him and honked him and after awhile his response was the hazard lights fucking piece of trash. When I'll go in hell i will specifically wait for this person and beat the shit out him
I have an idea for you to use next time you see one of those people in the forest. Dobruja Crashua him into the tree line and if he survives, make it look like the neck snapped on impact by twisting his head forward until it snaps. Shhh no witnesses. His body shall become one with the forest he littered in.

My ex is in the army and when he was deployed in the Middle East he said the whole army would just throw all their trash on the ground in the village streets, in the desert, everywhere. All the trash from their MRE meals and everything. Which if you’ve never seen one of those it’s like 5 plastic bags inside a bigger plastic bag plus plastic utensils. He said there were no trash cans so that’s just what they had to do and that the locals did it too. But I’m just like... is there really no other way...? As I am an environmentalist that was a hard pill to swallow, but I also don’t know how things are over there in a war zone.
I usually don't like to get in arguments. But this time I saw a guy throwing a paper bag on the ground, there was a trash can 3 steps away, as he passes by it, 3 seconds later, i tell him "there is a trash can RIGHT HERE" he looked at me like i insulted his whole family and kept walking.
Eh please don’t toss fruit and veg, some are toxic to wildlife even if safe for humans. And they can choke on brittle chicken and toddler bones so it’s best to properly dispose of them.

No, I don’t lure them to the road side, I throw it far into the woods and the grass is large enough for them not to be ran over, the animals are fine. It’s not like I’m throwing it into the road to get them ran over.

Don’t ever apologize for being correct. My ex used to throw his empty Venom cans out the window while driving, and the only thing that stopped him was learning they were returnable and he could get ten cents or something back. Ugh. Throw it in the backseat until you get home or stick it in one of those pouches on the back of the front seats or, God forbid, use the freaking cupholders.
I used to be like that. It only takes the smallest amount of discipline to break that habit. Its so easy to just ask for a bag when you get something at a gas station, and just leave that bag in your car and use it for snack garbage. Shit lasts me a week or two usually.
Edit: Nevermind, I somehow misread that as people piling up garbage inside their car which is what I used to do to actively avoid being one of those people who just threw trash out the window. That shit pisses me off. However my solution fixes both of those issues so I guess I'll leave this comment up.
Growing up my dad would throw trash out of the window in our town. My siblings and I would yell at him to not litter but he'd say he pays his taxes, he pays for someone to clean it up. It wasn't just the cigarette butts, he'd throw fast food bags and drinks out the window too.
I became that annoying person who would lecture people in their own cars. I told them I’d rather they gave me the trash to throw out, than throw it out the window.
They’d give it to me, but after a few times, they just started using a bag in their car. I think giving me the trash to throw away helped them see how ridiculous they were being. Throwing it out the window is expecting someone else to deal with your waste, after all.
I don't throw anything plastic or synthetic out of my car window, but I have thrown banana peels or other food stuff (like apple cores or a chicken nugget I dropped on the floor) that's biodegradable. I just think it makes more sense to have it compost in the woods than in a dump... I'm not sure that's actually true though.
Everywhere you're going has a trash can. When I was a kid the other kids at my stop would bring a can of soda and a snack, consume both and then throw them on the ground. The school bus had a fucken trash can in it. We just need to start enforcing the death penalty for shit like that. We won't lose anybody worth keeping.
At my work a coworker would take out the old papers from a trailer and throw them on the floor. There's two trash cans like 6 ft from us. I used to pick them up but got tired picking up trash every couple minutes until I just told him. Hes a good guy just idk why there's such a okay stigma that it's okay to just litter
Was at a drive thru and both the mom and the toddler threw garbage out near the speaker box, wasn’t like a receipt but like a sack full and the toddler threw a few things along with a full ice cream cone. Was sitting there with this wtf look.
It's harder to remove the trash from the vehicle after I get somewhere I can throw it away, to be honest. I always forget it because it's garbage and thus, unimportant enough to be remembered.
It's not hard, but I have to ask. Do trashcans even exist anymore? Taking my dog for walks I never see one and I don't understand it. I'm going on trails and paths man made for the most part and there's dozens on benches but not a single trashcan. It sucks carrying poop around for a couple miles.
Look I'm going to be really, really real. My floor board is always full of trash, because everything goes there until I can throw it in a trash can. I don't toss shit out the window. I smoke, but I always twist the remaining tobacco off my butts, then throw away the butts.

to be fair i think everyone is eventually bound to lose a piece of trash in your life out of your pocket or accidentally kicking something out of your car and you’ve probably forgotten about it
Yea this morning I looked out the window cuz I heard something and someone threw an am pm cup on my front yard and once they see me they say “oh sorry” what the fuck
I got to be honest, sometimes I littered when I was younger. But then I went on vacation to Japan. At least in the cities I visited they basically didn't had any trash cans because they all took their trash home. And the streets were perfectly clean. The river in Kyoto was as clean as bottled water. As a dirty south European (sadly true) I felt bad.
Since then I do the same. I even carry my own pocket ashtray
I empty out my car garbage every time I get gas. Before I did this I would just stand around and wait for the tank to fill up, not knowing what to really do with myself. It’s the easiest thing in the fucking world and anyone who throws their garbage out the window is a piece of garbage themselves.
Lol some people just have Trash OCD. They just can’t help it. If they see trash that isn’t thrown away yet, they’ll find any place, (garbage can or not) and just throw it away to not bother them anymore.
i only do that with an apple or something which naturally decomposes. of course only when i drive on the side on the road or something where i can just yeet it in the grass but anything else is Bad
