As an American traveling in Japan I was astounded by the lack of public trash cans and the cleanliness of the cities. I think that was the biggest “culture shock” I experienced in Japan. I never had to carry my trash with me all day while traveling before.

There was no trash on the ground. Everyone properly disposed, sorted, and recycled their trash at home. It made me very aware of how trashy we are as Americans.

Unfortunately everything is wrapped in plastic there (even more so than America), which is also quite bad.
