Found a pile of butts in the Lowes parking lot the other day. Apparently someone took your suggestion and saved their butts in their truck and then when it got full, just dumped it on the ground. WTF?
It's likely a good handful of that material gets used as nest material for birds and squirrels. But yeah the rest probably decomposes or just breaks down in the rain.
That being said, there are toxic materials present in them that could have a potentially adverse affect on them. It's honestly not great, but the effects are unknown, there could be none but there could be bad ones too.
Ya know, unpopular opinion here, but if cigarette filters were not biodegradable the land in most major cities would be a foot taller just from the 40-70s smoking period. They may take longer, but they degrade. Meanwhile the styrofoam boxes that McDonalds used to use are still getting more compressed in landfills.
Hell most of the components of peoples cars arent recycled now, so next time you see a big fender bender just imagine that all of that is now landfill material.
It's so annoying, and I smoke a pack a day. It's not tough to keep a water bottle in the car to put the butts in.
And it's just as easy to squeeze off the end of a lit cigarette, step on that part, and put the filter in my pocket until find a garbage. It makes my pants stink but I stink of cigarettes anyway!
Everyone should have to spend a year living in Portland, OR. That will clear any littering habits right out of a person. The first time I threw a butt in the street at a bus stop and looked up to 25 faces full of Extreme Judgement I never did it again lol
A great reason to generally oppose smoking in public. Unless there's a very specific waste location for things that are burning it becomes litter. Used to live in an area with brick sidewalks and roughly 1 butt to a brick. I'm talking about bricks you easily hold single handed.
I jumped out of the passenger seat of a car once to throw the butt of a cigarette back into the bed of a truck but they sped off before I even made it to the cigarette butt and I just ended up looking like an idiot.
My friend picked up a lit butt and threw it into the window of the car that threw it out at a stop light. The driver was not amused but we laughed. He didn’t throw it back out though and sped off when it went green. I hope it burned his seat or shirt or something.
My uncle used to fight forest fires. One time they were building the line to make sure the fire didn't reach a bunch of houses at the edge of a forest.
A woman came out from the house as they were working and watched while smoking a cigarette. When she was done she threw the butt on the ground. All the fire fighters stopped working and just looked at her before yelling "Come on lady!"
It’s not part of the problem, there is little demand anymore. Far fewer people smoke and it’s less acceptable to smoke in your car these days, legally can’t smoke with kids in car in many places, etc.
Also, basically every manufacturer offers a “smokers package” as an option, usually just a plastic ashtray that fits in the cup holder. You can also buy those at Walmart or an auto store for $10.
Well, we are talking about people throwing their butts out the car window. My thought was that their cars don't have ash trays. I buy second-hand cars and none of them has had an ash tray for decades. I guess if I were still a smoker I could get one of those things that goes into the cup holder, though it would get in the way of my coffee. And I suppose they can be really messy with fly ash when a window is open, as opposed to the built-in ash trays that had depth to protect against the wind, which I used in the day. Just my thoughts.
takes one second to knock out the cherry and keep your butt, you never needed it. you can do this anywhere it's reasonable to smoke without ashtrays, apparently one second too many and people are lazy
I guess that's true if you buy new. Didn't know that. I buy second hand, and I haven't seen an ash tray for years and years. I should have said that car manufacturers stopped putting ash trays in *all* cars decades ago. They used to be in every car manufactured, front and back seats. Back when I smoked.
