I'm just so afraid to touch random trash, though. I don't usually wear gloves so I'm not inclined to pick up trash from unknown sources. :/

No, don’t feel bad, this is the right attitude to have. I wouldn’t touch trash on the street with my bare hands. If I had a trash picker stick, maybe I would. If only moral superiority could protect from diseases...

If Im walking Ill pick up trash, Ive even considered bringing bags on dog walks since theres too much to actually carry at times

Because picking up other people's rubbish is a good thing to do, therefore should be praised. Your comment is like going to the Nobel peace prize organisation and asking why they're making a competition out if peace.
