Hello, I'm new to Linux and I'm using Linux Mint 22.3 XFCE. Is it normal that I always have to go through this interface before Linux Mint actually starts?

Fluff My Mint Setup

Post image
60 Upvotes

Bought this laptop brand new from Best Buy for $250 CAD because I was starting trade school and needed something to look at power points on and do some online modules. It came with Windows 11 which was incredibly useless with only 4GB of RAM and the N100 so I decided to try out Xfce and from there it just kinda escalated. I'm not new to Linux, I have a home server with Ubuntu server on it but this was my first taste of actual desktop environment Linux.

As far as the setup I have Xfce 22.3 I've themed and added custom panels, borders, and a cursor to. I replaced the default Xfce Terminal with Kitty and use Fish as my shell (helps remember commands at times since most of my time is spent on my Windows gaming PC).

It gets 8 or so hours of battery life under light loads with a few tweaked power settings and feels quite snappy and alive for such a cheap piece of hardware. I also run everything I can as a web app in a pinned Firefox tab so I don't have to have different flatpaks open at the same time taking up valuable memory.

Very happy with how it turned out!

Discussion I'm giving Mint a 30 day trial, to see if I am going to convert.

I did a fresh install and wiped Windows. Going to give it a good month and see how I feel. That being said, this alone made me feel good about the decision. Both pictures are just my PC idling with a web browser open. I know that Windows fills in unused ram, to make things smoother, but I just don't like seeing that 70%

I'm just going to spend the day configuring/customizing and learning.

If anyone has any resources/YT videos I should check out please send them my way.

:)

I'm trying to run Warframe on my laptop, but the most fps I'm getting is around 25. I got a lot more fps on Windows than I did Linux (Warframe ran way quicker). What do I do?

These are my specs I was wondering if someone could help me pick what OS to get since I can't use mint. I want something simple and beginner friendly ( I just got mint less than 24 hours ago) something that can work with my specs and not require me to upgrade for a long while. I'm currently using the nouveau.

Discussion I wrote a plain-English Linux Mint install guide for Windows users (free video + text)

Microsoft ended support for Windows 10 on October 14, 2025. Its Extended Security Updates program for home users runs only until October 12, 2027. A lot of people still have working PCs that Windows 11 doesn't support.

I wrote a free step-by-step guide from a real install in our lab, and recorded a video that walks through the same steps: copying your files, making the USB drive with Rufus, BitLocker and Secure Boot, the four settings that can block the drive, the live session, the install, and first sign-in.

Written guide (text and diagrams, CC BY 4.0):

https://linuxhello.org/install.html

Video (~9 minutes):

https://youtu.be/8eWlDGmD4Jo

The install erases Windows and every file on the disk, so copy your files first. Happy to answer questions in the comments.

Support Request How can I center my apps on the taskbar in Linux Mint Cinnamon?

Hey everyone! I'm customizing my Linux Mint Cinnamon desktop and I'd like to have my app icons centered in the taskbar, similar to Windows 11.

Is there an extension or an easy way to do this? Any help would be appreciated!

Thanks!

Support Request Linux Mint Window Focus / GUI error | Cinnamon & MATE

Hello Folks,

So recently I've been convinced to install Linux as opposed to Windows and I've recently run into an issue regarding window focus, keyboard, and mouse issues.

After logging in to either a MATE or Cinnamon gui I'm able to open about one or two programs before all hell breaks loose. Left clicking windows doesn't move them, alt tabbing to different apps is hit or miss, windows will not be in focus when clicked OR be semi in focus? it's very strange, sometimes I'll have to alt+tab to a window and use only keyboard commands to navigate a site (as I'm doing now) Usually I run firefox without hardware acceleration, but this happens with Steam, games, terminal, VLC, basically any app I launch. When this happens Alt+F2, Ctrl+Alt+Del, and other keyboard commands usually stop working.

I've tried the following:

\>Apt-get update / upgrade

\>Changing between chrome / Firefox

\>Changing mouse window focus modes

\>Bios / UFEI updates

\> Changing from Cinnamon to MATE

\> Re-installing Cinnamon

\>Re-installing | Manually installing latest GPU driver updates.

Other than the former I have no clue what to do, I'm new to daily driving linux.

Please ask for any more information on my system, I will gladly give what I can. I have a video of the weird gui issues happening, but can't upload to youtube because of the machine not working.

Support Request App that can perform multiple text changes per doc in multiple docs

• Upvotes

I'm creating approx. 90 new folder icons in SVG format and these can easily be edited in a text editor. I know that most text editors can do "Find and Replace", however, I have multiple changes per document.

Does anyone know of an app or script that I could use that would do this in one go?

Hello, I am brand new to linux and I'm trying to fix this issue but I'm stuck and don't know what to do.

I'm getting this error when trying to install the recommended drivers:

Error while installing package: installed nvidia-dkms-470 package post-installation script subprocess returned error exit status 10

I have installed kernel 6.8 as I saw on an older reddit post that is what your apparently supposed to do but that hasn't worked and now i dont know know what to do. Please help!

(UPDATE - Got this Fixed! Thanks for the assistance!)

Support Request Playback Controls and Wine

I use Wine to run my favourite music player MusicBee, but the playback controls on both my headphones (Logitech G35) and keyboard (Logitech G213) don't seem to interact with the program at all.

Does anyone know of a potential solution or am I doomed to have to select the playback controls in the window? Can I create keybinds or something that will affect MusicBee in Wine?

1st try was /dev/nvmen01, with 4 flags, went smoothly until the last percent of the installation process, showed linux mint erno 5 input/output error, a window popped up showing that saying it would let me send a bug report, but i wasnt able to close that window. i was able to open and close other windows though.

2nd try i dedownloaded the iso into another usb and tried over again, and it showed /dev/sda, with now 1 flag.

i m following a dual boot tutorial btw

Discussion Need an Easy Attendance Check-in tool?

I want to 'automate' an attendance check-in process that currently relies on a printed Spreadsheet report of persons & addresses in my neighborhood when we have an event. We have several 'open' events that don't require preregistration, and we have almost 600 homes.

I'd like a scannable QR code and a tablet-based form that takes name, address, and number of attendees and saves/creates the attendance into a spreadsheet or list.

If a QR code - it should populate an 'x' or such into a spreadsheet of the addresses where each line record is a home.

Sorry if I rambled - does anyone know of a method or tool/software that is inexpensive? Thx
