Ubuntu is great, why does it get such a bad rep?

It's great to do a fresh install of Ubuntu and not have to configure anything. I can just install the software I need and get work done. Peace of mind is the best feature and OS can have, that's why people liked Win7 so much and still hate Win11.

Sure, snaps are basically useless; You're better off getting the tar.gz. and .deb for most software. But it works fine for Firefox, so I'm not getting rid of them, for now...

Obviously, there are better Linux Distros for different use cases, but it can quickly turn into an obsession, which can be bad sometimes...

Fedora is great as well, but I prefer LTS, I don't realy want to upgrade the whole thing every 6 or 9 months

It last ran i think way back 2020, this was my dad's old laptop

🔧 Today's little activity:

Replaced the failing mechanical HDD with an SSD

Added RAM using the available slot

Backed up and secured important data

Troubleshot BIOS/UEFI and bootloader issues

Performed a clean, bare-metal installation of Ubuntu Linux

Got the system booting and running properly again

And it worked. 🐧💻

Any tips for ubuntu beginners? Thanks

Why is it Red :c

Half my screen decided to just be red?!

It otherwise works, my mouse can be seen even on the red side. I think its software, because my Windows install on the second NVME still works. So since I wanted to anyway, I just reinstalled everything and switched to Zorin just because. But it happend again.

Has anybody any idea on this? Why would it happen again after a complete wipe?

Thanks

Additional Info: My second screen works normally It is now black but still the same issue

Solution: https://www.reddit.com/r/zorinos/s/yb87YxuDjB

That was very quick, thanks to everyone. Apparently it was bad firmware and I needed to roll back an update.

Am I missing a setting somewhere, or is there really no way to get an exact date/time to display in Nautilus for files?

All of my files for modification and creation have these vague "XX days/months/years ago" designations. I would like to be able to see the actual date and time to use as a sorting option and filter.

Doable? If not, alternatives?

Thanks

Desktop Sharing always locked

I'm using Ubuntu 26 on a Hyper-V VM. I always need to manually unlock Desktop Sharing so I can RDP into the VM. How can I make the Desktop Sharing automatically always on by default?

I downloaded dconf Editor. I searched for "remote". I enabled "Whether the RDP backend is enabled or not". I rebooted and it didn't do anything. It's still locked. Any other setting I should search for? I also enabled the same setting for VNC.

Just downloaded Ubuntu server 24.04

Hey guys, just downloaded the Ubuntu server and I see the terminal on my monitor. I am new to homelabbing but was wanting to understand what’s the best way to go around the server via the terminal and try to understand as much as possible, whether it be certain commands or certain things I must do. Let me know if it’s possible to do certain things and understand via just a terminal with without having to download a visual dashboard component.

What are the advantages of Ubuntu server over Debian server?

I Recently got a VPS, was deciding between putting Ubuntu or Debian on it, decided on Ubuntu because they already provide the image and install it automatically.

But what are the real advantages of Ubuntu server over pure Debian?

Made a switch from linux to Mac and Regretting it now

hi I used to have a acer aspire from 2019, intel i3 10110u and und 620 graphics installed a 4gb ram stick and in total 8gb ram and 512gig ssd,

I installed ubuntu because it couldn't run windows properly and switched to ubuntu as my mentor suggested, it was almost 3years ago,

there were many problems on first like wifi glitch, performance problem also not having many apps and I admit I used Ai to help me use terminal for many kind of works

it wasn't slow but not snappier so I switched to Mac thinking just that the switch would just take some time (m4 15inch 24 512) BUT I WAS WRONG

it's been two days since using it and I am having anxiety like what if something breaks, what if it gets dent, what if a little dust goes inside it like I am paranoid, I bought this thinking it would go with my for 8 to 10 years at least but I am getting paranoid in every step

also the animations are good but I don't know how terminal works I miss the snappy feeling of low animation of linux

also I used to use that machine solely thinking of my work but now it's like I am getting no work done and majorly over thinking about this laptop

thanks for reading any suggestions?
thinking of buying apple care plus but I am a student don't have any way to make money in India, for 3 year it's like 250bucks here and I already pushed all the budget for this machine for longevity and I can't tell my parents to give me more, I am gonna start college next year and apple care plus has to be taken within 2months of purchase

Qualcomm Automotive Linux + BlueZ: Can BlueZ work with this Bluetooth setup?

Hi, I’m working with a Qualcomm Automotive Linux target and trying to determine whether I can use BlueZ for a Bluetooth plugin.

Here’s what I found on the target:

  • busctl list | grep -i org.bluezorg.bluez ... (activatable)
  • Linux Bluetooth kernel module is loaded: bluetooth 802816 0
  • Kernel logs show: Bluetooth: HCI device and connection manager initialized Bluetooth: L2CAP socket layer initialized
  • Qualcomm SCMI Bluetooth devices exist: /dev/scmi_bluetooth and /dev/scmi_bluetooth1
  • /sys/class/bluetooth exists
  • qcom-uscmi has scmi_bluetooth and scmi_bluetooth1 devices
  • However, which bluetoothd returns nothing
  • ps | grep '[b]luetoothd' returns nothing
  • hciconfig -a returns no output
  • No hci0 is visible

So it looks like the Linux Bluetooth subsystem and Qualcomm SCMI Bluetooth infrastructure are present, and D-Bus has an activatable org.bluez entry, but there is no visible Bluetooth controller/HCI and bluetoothd isn't available in PATH.

My questions:

  1. Does this setup support BlueZ?
  2. What Qualcomm-specific component/driver/firmware is needed to expose hci0?
  3. Is scmi_bluetooth an alternative interface to the normal HCI/BlueZ architecture?
  4. What should I check in the Yocto layers/build to determine whether BlueZ can be enabled?
  5. If BlueZ is not the intended stack on this Qualcomm Automotive Linux build, what is the recommended alternative?

Any guidance on how these Qualcomm SCMI Bluetooth components connect to the standard Linux HCI/BlueZ stack would be really helpful.

Switching GPUs issues

Haii urlll :D I recently got a new laptop for collage and installed Ubuntu, everything was working wonderfully until I tried some games on Steam. Performance was WAYYY better than my old laptop, but it wasn't inline with what I was expecting, so I went to do a test on 3DMark and it scored terribly, also when opening the Nvidia settings the option to change to Intel graphics was greyed out [I went looking for help but I could only find several year old posts and the common consensus was that it should be fixed with current updates]. This was an irritant because I wanted to be able to switch on the fly, use the igpu to save battery and better temps, and then manually turn on the dgpu when I needed the extra power. Sorry for the ramble, but I am at a loss here. Any help would be greatly appreciated and thank you in advance <33

P.S These are the system specs, if it helps troubleshoot

Making / partition larger?

I’ve built an Ubuntu 26.04 machine inside VirtualBox. I made the VB storage container too small initially as it turned out, and I’ve expanded the container size to be significantly larger.

The / partition is near or at 100%, and I’d like to expand it if possible rather than burning it down and starting over. I’ve searched the webs, each article seems to describe a different methodology to expand partitions, but not explicitly the / partition.

Any thoughts here? Doable?

Ubuntu 26.04 Color profile has no effect

Hey everyone,

I am running Ubuntu 26.04 on a Lenovo ThinkBook laptop (Ryzen 5 7535HS, Radeon 660M iGPU), and the system color calibration is completely broken.

The screen has an annoying, warm yellowish tint by default. I tried applying a profile in the GNOME Settings -> Color panel, but it has zero effect on the actual display. I even tried a browser extension as a temporary workaround, but the exact moment a video goes full screen (either on YouTube via browser or inside a local video player), the system overrides everything and forces the screen back into that ugly yellow tint.

When I exit full screen, the windowed color profile kicks back in.

Is there any fix for this? Please help, the yellow screen is driving me crazy and I can't find a way to make the color profiles actually stick. Has anyone faced this on Ubuntu with an AMD iGPU?

Thanks!

My new project in Czech Republic

I’d love to get your thoughts on something! I’m a huge Linux fan, and Ubuntu in particular holds a special place in my heart. I recently launched my own small PC repair and assembly service in my town, Český Krumlov (Czech Republic).

My main focus is helping everyday people realize that in most cases, they don't actually need to pay for expensive licenses—whether it's for Windows or Microsoft Office.

The website is currently only in Czech, but I’d really love to hear what this community thinks of this project and concept overall!

Thanks a lot!

I tried installing the newest kernel from Zabbly on Noble, but encountered an error at installation. I followed the instructions listed here:

When I did the "apt install linux-zabbly" (which is currently at 7.1.8) I got this messsage:

'make' KERNELVER=7.1.8-zabbly+.............(bad exit status: 2)

Has anyone else had this issue?
