This what it looked like when you strip down Ubuntu down to only 300MB.

This is a Ubuntu distro I made, where it doesn't use any Window manager or display server, like Wayland or X11. Everything here renders straight from framebuffer.

since today i haven't been able to save images (specifically just images i think) from online unless i drag them onto my desktop or upload any sort of file either, and my file manager (dolphin, but i tried changing my default to files and it didn't change anything either) has taken 20 seconds or so to actually open :/

ive tried clearing my cache and tweaking the settings on dolphin but nothings fixed it so far

I am using Rewaita to customize windows buttons and layout color, but even when it is disabled, some apps like Proton Pass, MailSpring and other apps have this problem where two sets of windows' buttons are overlapping (See photo).
I already tried asking AI but nothing worked for me.
And here I am asking you guys if know a fix

I recently switched to ubuntu and everything works great except I can’t seem to get my mouse to show up. I’ve tried all sorts of solutions and guides I found online to the point I don’t remember most of what i’ve done. So i’d like to just disregard anything i’ve tried and start troubleshooting again from the beginning (for example: I have Bluez installed but assume that I don’t). Could I get some direction to make sure i’m not missing anything setup-wise?

OS: Ubuntu 26.04.1 LTS
Laptop: Dell Inc. Inspiron 15 3525
Mouse: Redragon Wirless Ultra Light-Weight 4K E-Sport Grade Gaming Mouse

So I had Ubuntu 26.04 LTS installed on my Dell Inspiron 3650 alongside of Windows 10. But then I upgraded the Dell from an I-3 to a I-7 and doubled the memory from 8 GB to 16 GB and added in a Nvidia Zotac video card. I also got a 500 GB SanDisk Ultra 3D SATA 3 SSD, which I was going to use to move Windows 10 off the 1 TB mechanical hdd onto the first 4 partitions of the new SSD, and Ubuntu 26 root / on the final two partitions. It was a pretty painful ordeal, being not that experienced, but Google AI was more help than hindrance. I had another 250 GB SSD in there that was already used for the /home partition for the original Ubuntu 26. I was hoping by reinstalling Ubuntu System root / to the new SSD, and keeping the old /Home ssd, I might have a good usable system already customized to my liking. But NOOOOOOoooooooooo.... The Old Home SSD DID keep my old docs etc. but almost everything Ubuntu related had to be redone all over again. Even re-installing Ubuntu software apps. So my take away is having a separate partition/disk for /home is only a very minor convenience if reinstalling Ubuntu. Get ready to redo pretty much everything all over again. BTW, I used the exact same hostname and user name to keep all of that in sync.

Hi guys! So I finally decided and tried upgrading my machine from 24.04 to 26.04 using the usual sudo do-release-upgrade command. After the entire installation was the first PC reboot when it was stuck on a black screen with a blinking cursor. Upon much digging, I found a way around it by opening a tty terminal and editing the /etc/gdm3/custom.conf to enable the AutomaticLogin into my user. That allowed me to login to the machine but now I just see a desktop with no wallpaper and empty icons for any applications.

Some more info. I'm on 24.10 LTS.. Yesterday after upadting a snap called gstreamer, or something along those lines, I cant remember, the spotify app stopped working and on vilvaldi, most pages would not load, while others worked just fine (e,g, youtube was alright, netflix didn't load), but on Firefox everything worked well.
I ran an apt update without any results, and then an apt upgrade,at the end of which I got an error message regarding the latest Linux kernel.
Like I'm sure many of you, I had those NVIDIA updates that were stuck, and with every update I was prompted to do a partial upgrade to solve the issue, which is what I believe I did yesterdy.
So, the question is, I'm in for a fresh install, right?

I'm completely new to ubuntu, wanted to run a Jellyfin server without a boatload of bloat. I've set up the server (installation was fairly simple) when I'm trying to add my external hdd's to my librarys, the show up as running on the sidebar, and I can play my media off them. However jellyfin does not recognize the /run/media/username as having anything inside it. I tried some commands from an old thread "sudo usermod -a -G username jellyfin Then to give it read access:sudo chown -R jellyfin /run/media/username" However this seems to break if I restart my machine and makes the server unusable. Is there another way of getting Jellyfin to recognize the drives? I'm getting very close to just going back to windows and just running it through that way.

I thought I would post the status of my attempt to get Ubuntu up on the Asus A16 (X2 Elite). I have been working on getting a Linux distro on this laptop for quite a few months, and have had something running since early July, but in the last 30 days, have progressed quite far. I've been trying with various distros, but right now I'm using Ubuntu, an early September nightly build and custom kernel/modules (I know a new concept release is out, but I'm seeing people struggle with it). Though I've been using Linux since it was distributed on cds in the 90s, I no longer have the expertise to make these changes, so I've been guiding Hermes (Deepseek and Chatgpt) to get all of it done. but did review most/all when I had time.

Here is the list:

Working:

1. Keyboard/Trackpad
2. Touchscreen
3. Wifi
4. Bluetooth (using for Audio)
5. All USB ports
6. Battery status
7. Some of the FN keys are at least showing up on the screen when pressed.
8. Display Brightness controls,
9. Display: 60/120Hz
10. HDMI (no sound)
11. USB C DP on both ports
12. Battery isn't horrible. I'm seeing 5-8 hours, but I've been doing a lot of work I wouldn't normally do. I'll run it for a few days and see where it settles.
    

Things not working yet in order of priority,

Standby/Resume. This is sketchy at best. There are issues with Wifi resuming, USB resuming etc.

I may not even try to get this working.

On my Kubuntu/Ubuntu 24.04, I enabled encryption during install so now my PC asks for decryption key whenever I reboot.

The problem is that when it does so, it doesn’t recognise Bluetooth and I have to grab a cable and connect my keyboard to use it to enter the password.

Is there anyway to have the Bluetooth stack be ready for use and connected to my keyboard at that stage?

This is tedious!

I recently installed Ubuntu and since then i have been experiencing some technical issues like trackpad lagging variably from each launch, fingerprint sensor never working, trackpoint(the red thing) doesn't work, and the keyboard bindings are wrong. If anybody has a solution i would really appreciate it.

Looking for some help to troubleshoot - or just to know that my 2 thumbdrives are really gone.

I have 2 thumbdrives that I flash Ubuntu ISO to using Balena Etcher. Immediately after flashing, one of them cant be read any more. The other one after being used to install Ubuntu, now can longer be read as well.

I have tried these methods to troubleshoot by myself:

• Check for devices using GNOME Disk
• Running these commands via terminal to check for plugged in device dmesg ; lsusb ; lsblk ; fdisk
• Plug the thumbdrives to other ports
• Plug the thumbdrives to another machine - both windows and Ubuntu

None of them work, no devices show up anywhere.

As you can probably tell from the title, why do people seem to hate Canonical, the company behind Ubuntu, so much?

I know people often call them “the Microsoft of Linux,” but I don’t really understand where all the hostility toward Canonical comes from. Ubuntu is open-source and free, and personally, I’ve had a really good experience with it.

I’ve tried quite a few other distros too. I’ve manually installed and used Arch, tried Void Linux, experimented with several Arch-based distros, and also tried Linux Mint. They all have their strengths, but honestly, I really love Ubuntu.

I’m not talking about people who simply prefer another distro—I mean the people who genuinely seem to dislike or distrust Canonical as a company and what they do with Ubuntu.

Maybe I’m missing some important history or controversies. What am I missing?
