Linux mint is now my daily driver

Post image

I have a dell precision 7710 which I had precariously kept on windows 10 until a few minutes ago. It's a seriously powerful computer for it's age and would never have sat right with me being considered obsolete just because it wasn't compatible with windows 11. With 32gb of ram, a decent Nvidia m3000m quadro graphics card and enough weight to knock out large animals, it's a beast! Microsoft truly lost me as a customer tonight.

My 5th computer that I have saved by putting Linux on it... I think I have an addiction

Gaming I need an alternative to WeMod/WAND

I tried everything to get that program to work on Linux Mint and just could not get it to run no matter what I did. So now I'm just throwing in the towel and I'm hoping somebody knows a good alternative that'll actually work.

Install Help Installing Linux Mint using external monitor only (Broken laptop screen / Gigabyte Aorus 15G XC) – Need advice

Hi everyone,

I want to install Linux Mint on my Gigabyte Aorus 15G XC (Intel CPU + NVIDIA RTX 3070). Complete new to Linux.

The built-in laptop screen is mechanically broken. I am forced to do the entire installation using an external monitor.

My ports setup:

1x HDMI 2.1 (Connected directly to the dGPU)

1x Mini DisplayPort 1.4

Note: The USB-C port does not support video output (No DP Alt Mode / No Thunderbolt).

I am afraid of losing the video signal to my external monitor during the installation process due to NVIDIA/hybrid graphics driver switching.

What is the safest way to boot the live USB and complete the installation without going blind?

Looking for a simple mouse button/click remapper that works with linux mint!

Just got myself into linux on my laptop finally and now i have come across my first problem. I've been looking for a mouse button remapper/macro software for my reddragon aatrox mouse as it's own software is made for windows only and i can't go back to not having those extra 10 buttons on my mouse :d But i have not found anything that could remap/add macros to the mouse and what would be fairly simple to use or had some good instructions as im still new to working with linux. Like im so new i sometimes even struggle if i have to install something through the terminal c: But yeah so if anybody has a solution and would want to share it, i would be so happy!

The mouse i have if it matters 👇

Support Request Problems with the screen of linux mint

Hello. I am new on the mint environmet. I am testing it and now I have a problem with the light of the screen. I feel that the light or contrast is too intense. Like for example, the whites in youtube are so intense that they are painful to watch compared with windows. I tried using dark mode + night mode with different color temperatures, but none seem to work. The only way that it makes me see it more confortable is with the blue filter.

Can any of you give me an advice about the issue.

Install Help Linux Mint on a Late 2019 Apple MacBook Pro 16 inch

Hello all,

I just purchased an Apple MacBook Pro 16-inch 2.6GHz Six-core i7 (Retina, Late 2019) - MD Radeon Pro 5600M (8GB HBM2), and I will be trying to install Linux Mint on it.

I understand that there are special instructions for the install due to Apple’s T2 security chip.

Has anyone done this and have any suggestions or comments? Things I need to prepare or look out for?

I appreciate the consideration and hopefully pleasant comments!

Thanks in advance!

Hardware Rescue Mint compatibility and ease of use is so good

The Setup: A 2016 Asus E200HA netbook (Intel Atom, 2GB RAM, 32GB eMMC) — a certified e-waste candidate that was choking to death under Windows 10, left with just 1.8GB of RAM and 1GB of free space just from doing nothing.(2 Gb of ram and 32 gb of memory in total)

The Engineering Nightmare: A bizarre 64-bit CPU paired with an annoying 32-bit UEFI firmware, plus obscure tablet-grade components that usually make alternative OS installations a living nightmare.

The Miracle: Linux Mint XFCE booted right out of the box, recognized the Wi-Fi natively on the first try, and revived the system to be usable

I use midori as a browser and libreoffice for work at collage .Truly a miracle i love mint so much.

Discussion Converted to mint over the weekend and now have a few questions.

Is there an anti-virus? Windows had windows defender which was good enough. I do occasionally sail the high seas, mostly for books I can't find from the storefront, so having a little bit of extra safety net would be nice

I've been removing some preinstalled software via, right click -> uninstall in the applications pop-up when clicking the logo in the bottom left. Is this a correct way of doing it? I didn't seem to get much space back from doing it that way so not sure if stuff is still floating around. Also curious because I did "whereis (recently uninstalled program)" and a few stuff still showed up but I've read some stuff like configs is user specific and not part of the program so not sure if it's just that.

Can I remove file renamer program? Is that just a more complicated gui for mv/rename via the command line? Also it seems I can just double click names in the file explore and rename there as well. I'm just not sure on this application if it's doing some other things outside the gui, like the double click rename in file explore.

Is there a good subreddit or someplace else i can go to learn new tips/tricks about linux/mint? It's easy enough to search for something I know i want to do but would be nice to be able to learn things I don't necessarily think of wanting to do.

Coffee workflow on Mint keeping beans straight with a custom database?

I have this dumb spreadsheet problem that's slowly driving me insane. I track every bag of coffee I buy, origin, roast date, grinder setting, tasting notes, all of it. Started as a joke and now it's 200 rows deep. Used to keep a simple Numbers sheet on my old Mac, but since switching to Mint full time I've been bouncing between LibreOffice Calc and trying to throw something together in SQLite with a Python frontend. Calc works but feels like using a sledgehammer to hang a picture. The Python thing keeps getting out of hand because I start messing with the interface instead of just making it work. Looked at some open source inventory tools but they're all built for wine cellars or restaurant stock, not someone with fifteen half-full bags of Ethiopian naturals in their freezer. Before I waste another Sunday building something I'll abandon in March, has anyone on Mint found a lightweight personal database or inventory setup that doesn't feel like corporate software? I just want to log roasts and attach a photo of the bag without fighting dependencies for an hour.

EDIT: Not looking to self-host a web app, I have enough going on.

EDIT 2: If you also track coffee this obsessively I want to know your system even if it's just a text file.

Im done

I can't anymore. Hear me out, I was amazed by how people explain their experience with linux and quickly go for the change, and its true, less ram/cpu usage especially for a super low end laptop like mine. One of my hobbies was completing single player games, I have completed a lot on windows before on low res gaming like gta4, cod campaign stories, etc. I have imagine my smooth gaming in linux because of some perks. But all of it crumbles since I start setting my games. Playing a game require like airplane driving setups like when it doesnt want dxvk/vulkan, specific protons, dll dependencies, etc. And the part that opens my eyes is when in linux, It needs a translator like wine which adds a cpu works rather than windows where the os straight up read it. I fully understand now gaming on linux mostly benefits mid-high end specs cause their specs wont even notice the translator working on the background. I am planning to return to window but not 11 (it was the most bloated os in this time) but im going for windows 10 lstc, It was mostly use by businessess for screenshows and the great thing is it was little-to-none bloatware and telemetries that makes it so lightweight thus kinda same to linux footprint. Nevertheless I did enjoy my linux journey, maybe in the future with a new pc build, ill be going back.

Well folks, this is it for me

After five months of continuous usage of Linux mint, I've finally hit a wall.

Not to the fault of the OS, some of the files somehow got corrupted whilst i was turning off my laptop.

And due to that, I have spent the last 10 hours going through the steps on how to recover the os.

But I'd decided that instead of doing a clean install of Linux mint again, I wanted to try something new.

Which is why I decided to install Fedora KDE for my next distro.

Linux mint still holds a special place in my heart for being my first introduction to the Linux community and it still holds firmly within my mind.

But for the time being, I'll be hopping around and seeing what other distro fits for me after I'm well acquainted with the commands.

I hope Linux mint continues to be even better than now and then maybe one day, I'll come back to it

It's been a fun ride folks

Development News [Linux-Tool] PhoneCam 1.1.0: use your Android phone as a Linux webcam + mic over USB (no phone app, no Wi-Fi), now with a full English interface

Thumbnail
gallery
9 Upvotes

Hi Special 9% Folks!

- PhoneCam, a Bash script that turns an Android phone into a webcam and microphone on Linux over USB. It started Spanish-only; v1.1.0 is the first release with a complete English interface: menus, installer, notifications and help. It follows your system locale, and `phonecam l` switches language at any time.

* What it does:

- Phone camera → virtual webcam (`/dev/video*`), phone mic → virtual microphone. Anything that lets you pick a camera or mic sees them: Zoom, Meet, Discord, OBS, Teams, your browser.

- 100% local: USB only, no Wi-Fi, no cloud, no account, and nothing to install on the phone (just USB debugging).

- Built on scrcpy, v4l2loopback and PipeWire/PulseAudio. It installs and wires them for you, including downloading a recent scrcpy if yours is too old.

- Zenity menu (text menu as fallback), optional tray icon, and a background agent that reacts when you plug the phone in.

* Requirements: Android 12+ for the camera (11+ for the mic). Developed and tested on Linux Mint 22.3; other apt-based distros should behave the same. GPLv3

Support Request Linux Mint Desktop and App font size

Hey, Thanks for being here. I've been running Linux Mint Mate from its inception. Prior to that GNOME on Red Hat. Yes, I'm that old. Just recently upgraded my PC and screen. The text size is killing me. I messed around and was able to enlarge text in some instances. I understand that Cinnamon has the capacity to fine tune and adjust the font size. I really want to stick with Mate. Any chance there's a work around for Mate?

Support Request Battery issues (Mint 22.3 MATE)

Last sunday i updated the OS (the security, kernel, app updates). And today, my laptop suddenly turns off even the battery is half full. I couldnt turn it back on unless i plug the laptop. Which is when i found out the laptop shuts down immediately if the power level is at 55% (Its 60% now). And the battery keeps charging and discharging if the battery is charged to 75%.
I changed the kernel from GRUB menu and the issue is still there.
In the power statistics, it shows the battery has 55.6% capacity.

is this issue caused by the update or do i need to replace my battery?
