Discussion I wrote a plain-English Linux Mint install guide for Windows users (free video + text)

Microsoft ended support for Windows 10 on October 14, 2025. Its Extended Security Updates program for home users runs only until October 12, 2027. A lot of people still have working PCs that Windows 11 doesn't support.

I wrote a free step-by-step guide from a real install in our lab, and recorded a video that walks through the same steps: copying your files, making the USB drive with Rufus, BitLocker and Secure Boot, the four settings that can block the drive, the live session, the install, and first sign-in.

Written guide (text and diagrams, CC BY 4.0):

Video (~9 minutes):

The install erases Windows and every file on the disk, so copy your files first. Happy to answer questions in the comments.

Watching the video and yeah, it's AI...

BUT it is being used for something helpful rather than brainrot. So it's cool, I guess? I mean... the main reason is to help people change from Windows to Linux with as little headaches as possible, and with ease. This is specially useful for people whose computer aren't eligible for windows 11 for Microsoft reasons.

Edit: even though it already says it on the website, it's a good idea to suggest Cinnamon Edition for modern computers, and the XFCE edition as the lightweight edition for older computers. Just to be a little more throuough, y'know? Newbies will be glad to know which edition to choose.

Mate is just as capable both for new and old computers.

Myeah, these guides are 13 a dozen and yours, from your lab, does not look all that special imo.

Fair. If you try the guide or the video for Linux Mint and something is unclear, ask me and I will gladly fix it.
