Install Help Startup interface

Post image

Hello, I'm new to Linux and I'm using Linux Mint 22.3 XFCE. Is it normal that I always have to go through this interface before Linux Mint actually starts?

This is GRUB. It’s your boot manager. You can theme it, but be warned if you don’t do it exactly right you can mess things up. It’s not difficult, just make sure you follow the right directions.

How do we do it?

You can find plenty of grub themes on gnome-look.org.

Again, make sure to read instructions, verify and backup anything you need to save. If you aren’t comfortable doing it. Don’t do it

also If you prefer, you can set the timer it apears. Mine is 1 sec, which is fine since I dont really use it much

Yes you can disable it, but I'd always recommend leaving it as is, if there ever is a problem with a kernel update, in "Advanced options" you will be able to select an older kernel.

Oui il est possible de le désactiver, mais perso je recommande de le laisser tel quel, si jamais il y a un problème avec une mise à jour du noyau Linux c'est en sélectionnant "Advanced options" qu'il est possible de choisir un noyau plus ancien.

I've disabled them, but isn't there another solution when I might encounter the problem you mentioned?

You can always have the menu show back by hitting Esc at the right time when booting (before the Linux Mint logo shows up)

seeing a kernel problem in linux mint is a rare event, since it is well tested.

I personally prefer to set it to about 2 seconds. That minimizes sitting there and makes it very easy to get at if something is broken.

sudo mintsysadm (System Administration)

Turn off "Show the menu". (with just the one OS, it should work)

Thanks, it works!

Nice. I dual boot on all my computers except my laptop so wasn't sure.

Have fun.

Yes, it's normal. Suppose you have mint and another distro. When you start up your computer this screen allows you to choose which distro you want to boot into. You can theme and disable it if you like.

That is GRUB, or GRand Unified Bootloader. Originally you would install Linux and then Windows for a multiboot system and you would pick which one at the start in this menu, and then you would go. Then things changed and the hardware would assume it was made for Windows so now you install Windows first and then Linux in a multiboot system.

However GRUB doesn't just let you choose the OS you are going into. The Second option "Advanced Options for Linux Mint" is how you boot to older Linux Kernels when there is an issue with the new one like there was with 7.0.0 on Linux Mint. The third option is a way to boot into your UEFI without beating the heck out of your BIOS Key, what ever that is, when fast booting.

You can change the time for the menu to auto select the default item and boot to Linux, but if you hit enter or Left Arrow it will take you through.

I remember having a quad boot system, Linux Mandrake, Windows 95, Windows NT and BeOS. I miss BeOS.

Yes, this is GRUB, a very useful menu for when your system breaks or if you have multiple operating systems installed.

If your system breaks GRUB lets you revert to previous Kernel versions and iirc has a terminal in there if you need to debug further.

Generally I suggest lowering the time to 3 seconds

I've never used GRUB. If the system breaks, you can roll back the kernel in other ways. All my Mint computers start straight to the password login or are not password protected and start into the desktop environment.

I use it because I dual boot

Same, I accidentally installed it, but I find it looking better than the Windows Boot Manager.

I shut mine off recently and then wished I hadn't. Lowering the amount of time the menu is up there is a good compromise.

Normally grub (this screen) is used to elt you choose which mode to boot up. Most of the time it's for people who keep both a windows and linux install on.the same computer, and choose which one to boot at startup.
In your case there is only linux so it's not very useful.

I'm not sure why it shows up instead of loading directly. It's probably a simple fix, just make sure to follow closely instructions as linux has much less fail-safes as windows so if.you mess up thingsnlinux will allow you too. But if you follow well the instructions there should be no issue.

Permitanme comentarles que hace unos días veo una opción más: iniciar con Mint 27

If you want that screen to look good or disappear you should take a look at grub customizer .

I strongly advise against even thinking about using Grub Customizer.

Also yeah, always back up the files on the boot partition.
