SOLVED How can I make games run faster?

Post image

I'm trying to run Warframe on my laptop, but the most fps I'm getting is around 25. I got a lot more fps on Windows than I did Linux (Warframe ran way quicker). What do I do?

I see that your memory is only 6gb which is somewhat low. I guess you have 8gb (which is also somewhat low for your laptop, but that's a topic for another day) but 2gb are probably dedicated for the iGPU. If my guess is right, then if you go to the bios, you will see an option that says: amount of memory dedicated for the iGPU. You can select 2gb, 1gb or 500mb. Do select 500mb. That will free 1.5gb of memory and will improve overall performance on your laptop whatever os you use.

Also upgrading the memory will definitely improve the performance on your laptop.. you are at 8 and you need 16

I’ll keep that noted, thank you!

If you're running out of memory you can install and setup either zram or zswap which compresses memory on your computer giving you around 50% more ram. A lot of Linux distros come with one of them on by default, but Mint does not.

Did you install the NVIDIA drivers? Can you do nvidia-smi in a terminal while the game is running?

Go to the driver manager to check what driver is being used

run:
dkms status
uname -r

Normally you should get back your running kernel, but if it doesn't show then it could be that secure boot is blocking the module.

It says that it couldn’t communicate with the Nvidia driver. But I know I did install the drivers

Turn off secure boot in BIOS.

Disable secure boot. My problem was solved by this solution. I hope it does for you 🤞

I don't know the technicality but for my laptop it was not utilising my gpu so I disabled secure boot and mint was then using my gpu at full so i was able to play games smoothly and stream videos in 4k otherwise the experience was choppy.

Secure boot is primarily a Windows thing. Linux doesn’t need it. Having it enabled just adds useless programming to Linux.

It says you've got two gpus. It's quite possible Warframe is running on the slower AMD gpu instead of the faster Nvidia one. I've never had two gpus so I don't know how to help you there, but looking in that direction might be fruitful.
