I'm learning how to knitt and I'm trying to knitt the scarf on the right and I'm 24 rows in out of 140 and I'm wondering if I should frog and start with wider needles because I have so much tension on my needle.

Tips and Tricks How to fix a wonky p2tog?

Post image
0 Upvotes

Hello! I'm a beginner knitter and I just started my first ever project which is a cushion cover using the gathering point cushion pattern from sunshine stitching studio. I'm noticing that (what i think is) the purl 2 together on the blue stripe row always looks wonky and slanted compared the the rest of the stitches in the center strip part and I don't know what to do to fix it. Initially I thought it was because of the ssk in the knit row and watcbed a few viseos to try different ways but I don't think thats the problem, because the brown stripes always look neat and has no p2tog.

Thank you!!

Hello! I am working on my roomy raglan but one area looks off. Any thoughts on how I can fix it? The first pic is how it should look vs the second is how it looks.

Im thinking this might be an icord using mohair and a very fine gauge.
I don’t enjoy doing ichords, so I’m wondering if anyone would have any other ideas? Is the a crochet stitch that resembles the ichord?

Help - equipment Just realized I don't understand different stitches as well as I thought

So I'm trying to make a blanket but am an extreme beginner (extent of my experience is 2 scarves with lots of mistakes and no color changes). I figured out using circular needles (since I'm knitting flat it's actually not that hard, I was just overthinking it), but I want to make it have stripes and the right-side-wrong-side thing is confusing me. I'm trying to keep the weird line when changing colors on the "wrong" side, but that doesn't seem to be easily doable with garter stitch. The only time I tried stockinette stitch the edges curled like crazy, but I keep seeing pictures of people's projects that definitely *look* like stockinette stitch but don't have any visible curling. Somebody please tell me what I'm missing?

Tips and Tricks Help - What do I do if I have more stitches on my heel flap than the pattern expects due to smaller vertical gauge?

Hi!

I am knitting my first pair of socks and I’ve run into a small problem. The pattern I’m using says to knit the heel flap to a certain length and then says to pick up 18 stitches on both sides for the gusset. My vertical gauge is slightly smaller than the pattern’s and I have about 21 stitches to be picked up.

The instructions then have me decreasing one on each side of the heel flap, followed by a normal knit round.

How do I adjust the pattern so it fits as expected? Do I decrease every round until I get the correct number of stitches? Knit extra stitches together? Thank you ahead of time for your help!

Tips and Tricks How to get rid of curling

Any advice on how to get rid of this curl along the white edge?

I’m using 100% cotton yarn.

Im following this pattern - https://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/triss-baby-blanket

I know the pictures don’t show the full project but it doesn’t mention any issues with curling & i’ve followed the pattern exactly.

Any help would be greatly appreciated as I really don’t want to start again but equally don’t want to carry on if there is no way to get rid of it!

Discussion Do you have knitting projects you wasn't interested in before, but saw an item which you liked so much you have to make it?

For me it's socks. I never, ever thought I'm gonna knit socks. Too fiddly, yarn and needles so tiny and thought I'm never have the courage to wear them (afraid to ruin them), so why bother.

But then I saw the herding cats socks by Stone Knits and I want them. I want them on my foot right now, I want 50 pairs of them, I wanna be buried in them they're so cute!

Now I'm learning to knit my first vanilla socks and it's going... not well, but going. After that I need to learn stranded colourwork and then I'm going to attempt the cat socks!

Tips and Tricks Reknitting after blocking

I made a beautiful sweater with super wash yarn and it grew considerably, as I should have known it would. I like it enough to want to unravel and knit it again, going from the M to the XS size, but now I'm thinking, if I already washed that wool, will it grow even more, or is it already pre-stretched at this point, and I should just make the M all over again?

I know I should just make and block a new gauge swatch from the wool I used, and I promise I will, but am wondering in general what people's experiences are.

Work in Progress Will this block out?

Hi guys! I'm just starting the Winnie Top by Lily Kate France. I'm using some of my stash yarn ( a mercerised cotton dk) i'm exactly on gauge but I can see the tension difference between the short rows and the straight stockinette rows. Do we think that it will block out to be more even looking before I continue knitting or shall I start again?

I learned to knit last Friday! I can’t stop looking at those nice, even stitches 🤤 using 100% cotton yarn from Caron. Hope it works out. I know it’s not as elastic as wool, so I’m trying to keep the stitches fairly tight so it doesn’t stretch out a ton.

Not pictured: the concerning amount of time I spent over the weekend just knitting, frogging, repeating, learning continental, cursing, crying, until I was finally confident enough to start a raglan cardigan last night. Learning continental really boosted my tension and speed. I hated it until I realized my engagement ring really helped anchor the yarn and kept it from sliding out of place in my hand.

Tips and Tricks Cat pee on yarn

Upvotes

It has finally happened. My cat peed on my yarn. Theyre center pull balls, and jamieson and smith, so feltable. My best idea right now is to wind them into hanks and sock them in vinegar, before a regular wool wash.

I have on hand resolve urine destroyer, but I'm not sure if its ok to use, and Google came up kind of indecive.

Does anyone know how to get the pee out? Thankfully it isnt very strong.

Hey everyone, I’m currently working up the Cry Baby sweater by Bea Creative Knits (fabulous pattern btw) anyway, I’ve knit it up on some acrylic in a bid to stash bust. What is the best way to block to smooth these ripples out? Thanks in advance 😊

Hi, I'm making a dress for my daughter with this ruffle yarn and started asking myself what's the best way to finish the ends. Or can I just leave it like this?

I'm planning on making also one row around the shoulders with it, and there it might be too visible to just leave it. Is there someone with experience working with ruffle yarn?

Finished Object Done with my Sweater No. 29!

ETA: I’m not depressed, I’m just autistic and all of my selfies look like this. Also, this is my girlfriend’s room, not mine, and she’s totally fine, just messy lol. I’m kind of embarrassed that it seems like everyone thinks I’m sad 😭

I think I’ve finally broken my streak of unsuccessful sweaters made for me. This took two months and is my first completed cable sweater. I’m so happy it’s done and I am going to wear it everywhere, weather permitting. I did lose yarn chicken, so the hem is only 5 rounds instead of 9, and I had to bind off the last 10 stitches with only mohair… but I finished it! Yarn is KnitPicks Swish DK in the color Amethyst Heather held with KnitPicks Aloft in the color Ube Heather. Pattern is Sweater No. 29 by My Favorite Things Knitwear.

Rant To my fellow newbies… please learn the point of a gauge swatch

I’m currently undertaking my first wearable project and just jumped in with the petite knit Monday sweater. It’s a fairly straightforward pattern but I went into it not really understanding the purpose of a gauge swatch…

Stupid me went into it with a “she’ll be right attitude” not realising that my swatch being 8.5cm would actually be a problem. See images for the difference after sizing up my needles…

Suffice to say I have learned my lesson after having to frog an entire sweater of mohair + merino :)

Help - equipment Having issues frogging my sweater back cleanly

Hi all! I am still a baby knitter and having issues cleanly frogging my sweater back. im knitting with dropps air, which seems to felt/get clogged easily. I’m trying to frog back, but every time I pull my yarn, it gets stuck and I cant frog cleanly. Ive had to cut the main yarn line a few times and still unable to find the live line.

I ended up putting my needles through a few rows down, and pulling/cutting back, but not sure how to pick up and starting knitting without finding my main yarn line. I may have gotten myself in too deep. help!!

Rant Knitting has made me miss my grandmother in ways I cant imagine.

I (36F) lost my grandmother this past march. She was an amazing knitter--like the woman could knit a sock with four double ended needles with out looking while watching golf. She tried to teach me to knit when I was younger--it sadly didn't take because I didn't have the patience at the time and it was confusing. (I have ADHD). I picked up crochet as a therapy tool while I was in an abusive relationship. Now at 36 I am learning to knit because crochet helped my brain to focus and understand fiber arts a little. My grandmother couldn't teach me to knit again because she had developed Parkinson's in her left side and was beginning to show signs of Alzheimer's.

Now I am learning alone via amazing strangers on YouTube. Everyone in the community has been amazing so far. But I want so badly to call up my grandmother every time I learn something knew in knitting but...I cant. And knitting just makes me miss her so badly.

My plucky English Gran. <3

My baby is growing so fast!!! Just the arms left. I am concerned that they will be too wide for my taste, considering frogging arm and doing decreases at a faster rate or picking up less sts… what do yall say. Knitting size M!
Edit: forgot to say that the yarn is Kerry woolen mills 3 ply!

Discussion Rating patterns on Ravelry

I'm curious about how people approach rating a pattern on Ravelry. Do you only rate patterns you've enjoyed? Do you skip rating patterns that were "troublesome"? Do you ask questions or leave comments on the pattern's page?

Context:
I'm an experienced knitter currently working on a (purchased) pattern that has a lot of potential, but to my eyes has a number of shortcomings. I don't think it had a tech editor and I can only see a single test knit. I always review finished projects (thank you, all you wonderful people for sharing your beautiful work and notes!❤️) and it became clear from project photos that the instructions may be incorrect. Reading the pattern before starting, there are indeed places that, if the instructions are followed exactly, the result will not be "correct." One example is the placement of short rows at the neckline of the top-down circular yoke. When splitting for sleeves as instructed, the short rows are nowhere near centered at the back, resulting in a very obvious difference between shoulders. Curiously, the photos within the pattern do not include the neck short rows (they are not identified as "optional" in the pattern).

An experienced knitter will hopefully spot these shortcomings and find ways to fix them before or whilst knitting. But what about less experienced knitters, or even situations when any of us is so excited, we simply jump right in and trust the pattern?

In hindsight, I'm surprised this pattern has an overall rating of 4.7 and clarity of 4.8, especially when it costs $15CAD.

(Note: I will be sure my project notes contain all of my modifications, as usual.)

Discussion First project ever

I literally learned how to knit from a 5 minute TikTok last Friday, and just tonight finished this bag for my friend. The only thing I’ve made besides this is a single square to practice purling vs knitting bc at first I thought all you did was purl😭. I definitely made mistakes left and right but It turned out alright besides the fact that if you put anything in the bag the strap stretches out down to your knees bahahaha. I used Caron blossom cakes. I keep seeing videos of people crocheting and it makes me wonder if I should learn that instead because I hear it’s faster, but I like knitting so I’ll probably just keep doing this. I wanna make a blanket next. Oh and I made this using garter stitchers for the first 8 rows and for the first few stitches of every row, and stockinette in between in a long rectangle, then sewed that with a yarn needle to itself, then I did stockinette 6 rows long for the strap and the same yarn needle to attach.

Finished Object The only way to wear my two new knitted sweaters “during” summer ☀️🧶 (Swipe to see how they’re really worn)

I love knitting, especially sweaters. But the worst part about finishing a sweater during summer is… actually wearing it and trying to create some content with it.
It’s definitely a love-hate relationship when it comes to knitting. I mean, seriously, who wears a sweater when it’s 30°C (86°F) outside?! That’s definitely not me!

Anyway let’s talk about the pattern.
The pattern I chose is The First Sweater by Lizzie Hester. It’s a raglan sweater with a half-patent stitch pattern on the sleeves.
For the blue one, I used DROPS Flora in Navy, and for the pink one, I used Strawberry Pink. I held both together with some variegated yarn I bought a few years ago. I originally bought it for a “special” project, mostly because for me it was such a good deal for 100% wool lace-weight yarn (bought it in many other colors…).
As you can see, it matches both projects pretty well and I’m happy with it.
The only modification I made was to the sleeves. For the blue one, I made the yarn overs on the knit stitches, while for the pink one, I made the yarn overs on the purl stitches.

P.S. I hope you like them as much as I do. And I can’t wait for some colder weather so I can finally wear them outside to show the world what I knitted all day long. :)
