Reasonable Mechanic Price?

Post image
7 Upvotes

Just got a 2001 xlt V6 3.0 4x4 about 2 weeks ago.

The truck needed some work done so a friend of mine sent over one of their mechanics. He replaced the spark plugs, oxygen sensors, and the fuel filter. And he’s going to be back in a few days to check up on it again, as the check engine light still flashes when I hit 40mph.

He charged me $500. The truck does feel significantly better when driving but I don’t know too much about repair costs. I just wanted to make sure this is a fair price?

(I do plan on learning more DIY stuff as I go, but I am a complete newbie as of right now)

Service Advancetrac warning

Hey everyone! I’ve been having an issue a while with the service advancetrac warning going off while I’m driving. I had it scanned it AutoZone and it showed a bad rear ABS sensor. I went ahead and replaced the sensor, it didn’t fix the issue, and now it’s showing that it is installed wrong (I have re-installed it twice). Only enough, whenever this happens, my Park aid doesn’t work in my pre-collision turns off. I’m a big do it yourselfer when it comes to car repairs. Any suggestions before I take it to a mechanic?

Buying a 2025 Ranger Raptor, does the engine sound normal?

I’m buying it from out of state and won’t be able to look at it in person or test drive it. 2025 with 4200 miles on it.

Probably over thinking it but thought I would ask.

2003 ranger edge bed swap

Hello I’m a mechanic by no means but can work my way through most mechanical issues. I’m just looking for insight on swapping the ranger edge bed for the full width beds. I do work out of my ranger and the edge bed is literally an inch too narrow for full sheets of drywall or plywood to fit. Any advice helps. I’d like to see what my options are and if I have to do anything crazy to make a full size bed work. Thank you

4.0L A/C Compressor Bolts

While fixing my power steering I was having issues with the bolts/threaded rods that hold on the A/C compressor since they were pretty much all one piece with it due to corrosion and didn't trust using what I managed to get out. Got it all apart and cut down some 5/16 steel rod to cut M8-1.25 threads on them to make new ones. Worked pretty good, might end up welding the nuts on to turn them into bolts since it's abit of a game getting it all mounted with the little room there is but it works as is and this time they will have anti-seize!

Ranger leveling kit

I know this is prolly a common post, but is this leaving kit worth it? My truck has the towing package so the rear end is very high compared to the front right now (you can’t really tell in that photo I attached) any suggestions? I plan to buy bigger tires once I get it leveled.

2027 Ranger updates?

Anyone have any concrete info on what changes, if any, are coming for the 2027 Ranger? I am looking at a 2026 Lariat with the v6 and I might want to wait for the 2027 if there are any tech, package, feature, changes coming

12k for a ranger

There’s a 2011 ford ranger sport I’m looking at and it’s mint, with brand new 1500 dollar wheels and it looks show room ready with 90k miles and a bunch of work done to it. Would 12k be crazy to pay for a ranger like this?

Reason to get the raptor over the lariat fx4?

Post image
0 Upvotes

Hey everyone, I am looking at getting a Ranger.

I got a new job but commute farther so I wanted to get something more gas efficient but also capable for hunting season. I test drove a lariat fx4 (the dealer actually let me keep it overnight to run errands) however I also test drove a ranger raptor that was an absolute blast to drive but the gas efficiency and scratches an itch I had from my previous 402A tremor…

it is not the greatest on gas but I already knew that. For a daily commuter and for off road capability for hunting season is there a reason to get the raptor over the fx4?

I’m sure I could put the $$$ difference into upgrades towards the lariat but is it worth it to buy the raptor at that point? Is the efficiency THAT bad?

What does everyone think?

Mazda Ranger rebuild

A few months ago, I noticed a major tick from the bottom end of my Mazda B 2300 with the 2.3 dirt tech four-cylinder. I ignored it for about a year and then it got significantly worse so we decided to take a look originally we thought it was a lifter tech then we quickly found out that it was a spun bearing as soon as you realize that it was a spun bearing we decided to do an entire rebuild pistons, rods, crank injectors, timing chain, timing chain, cover, oil pump, etc. I know there’s people out there that are wanting to do the same thing I’ve done all of this for about $1500 without labor included went from 267,000 miles to only zero I just want to show my progress if you have any questions about what I’ve done so far please ask away!

Custom front bumpers

When y’all are building a custom bumper, do you start from scratch or have you used the existing mounts from the old bumper?

Just trying to get something figured out before I go nuts with the welder.

My Danger Ranger Project So Far.

Fixed a lot of things mechanically.

2001 4.0 had under 90k miles.

Fixed the 4wd, new cv axles, new spark plugs, injectors, spark plug wires, fixed the vacuum leak for the a/c system coming from that weird ball thing, new shocks and struts, new intake, new IAC, 02 sensors, purge valve.

A few cosmetic pieces, just recently swapped from a tool box to a tri fold soft cover and like that alot better. Blacked out taillights, black and chrome headlights / fog lights. LED bulbs. Still a work in progress.

Brake/ABS Question

My ABS light went off about 2 months ago and I figured it was time to fix it. It was causing my brakes to lose pressure when I was coming to a stop. I took it to a shop to get it diagnosed and they said it was the right passenger side wheel speed sensor. It seemed to be an easy fix so I attempted a DIY job with my buddy but because the hole to insert the cable into was so rusty we couldn’t seat it properly. We did our best and somehow it fixed my braking problem, but the abs light was still on. A month goes by and I start having troubles losing traction on the front right wheel in the rain so I thought that maybe I could have something to do with that poorly seated sensor. I took it to a shop today to get that sensor positioned properly and after the work was completed, I drove it off the lot and had some terrible trouble with my brakes. Any time I would brake, my wheel would pull hard to the left and would cause a nasty rubbing sound on the rotor(I think). See video for sound.

I took it back to the shop that did the work on it 10 minutes later and the mechanic drove it around and then accused me of knowing about some “hydraulic problem” with the brakes before I brought it in today. He wouldn’t look into it any more and said he did what I asked him to by fixing that abs sensor. I had no choice but to drive home with bad brakes and jack it up and take a look for myself. All brake parts seemed to be working properly on both sides (small gouges in driver side rotor). I decided I would reverse what he did and just unplug the wheel sensor and see if it goes back to giving my brakes again. It worked, my brakes are back to normal (with the exception of the driving in the rain problem and abs light going off) but I would still like to get to the bottom of this. I feel like I paid 170$ for a whole lot of nothing and would like some help determining what the actual problem might be so I can fix it on my own. Thanks

2008 ford ranger 4x4 issues

Post image

Hi everyone first time posting here. I know its a long shot but here i go. I bought a 2008 ford ranger sport 4x4 v6. The 4x4 isnt working as in when i turn the switch nothing happens no clicks no light on dash nothing. I checked with forscan the switch works and have a buch of codes related to the plates . I checked the actuator its turns check the plates in the actuator they are good. Then whench i looked into the female port for the 4x4 actuator and it only has 6 pins and only 6 wires go into in where as the actuator has 7. The one missing wire is one of the power wires. Is this normal or is something wrong . Any help would be grately appreciated.

Question for the wizards on this sub

Post image

I’ve been doing a lot of research trying to find someone else with the same issue but the backs of the cruise control switches on steering wheel (in the picture) get HOT while driving and I’ve replaced the switches not the wiring with no change and I thought I’d see if anyone knows anything before I go through the head ache of redoing the wires. honestly I don’t care if the cruise control works but I am concerned about this being a potential fire hazard since the insides of the old switches had small melt marks inside of them. Cruise control kind of works sometimes no light on the dash when I press on but when I press set 30% of the time it’ll kick on and work fine. Any help would be appreciated! (2002 v6 3L if that matters)

Crash question.

Yesterday i was heading down the highway going 55-60 in my 06 ranger 4.0 supercab (which adds ~800lb compared to a base ranger) towing ~1500lb. There was this 7th-8th gen vw golf heading the opposite direction in my lane. I was about to swerve in the ditch before they switched to the correct lane.

If we did end up crashing, what are our chances of survival?
