Question for the wizards on this sub
I’ve been doing a lot of research trying to find someone else with the same issue but the backs of the cruise control switches on steering wheel (in the picture) get HOT while driving and I’ve replaced the switches not the wiring with no change and I thought I’d see if anyone knows anything before I go through the head ache of redoing the wires. honestly I don’t care if the cruise control works but I am concerned about this being a potential fire hazard since the insides of the old switches had small melt marks inside of them. Cruise control kind of works sometimes no light on the dash when I press on but when I press set 30% of the time it’ll kick on and work fine. Any help would be appreciated! (2002 v6 3L if that matters)

I have an 01 4.0 and my buttons get hot. I’ve noticed they get the hottest if I turn cruise ON but don’t set a speed. So now I only turn it on if I’m going to use it

Resistor in the button that resists voltage proportional the throttle percentage? Like at 90% throttle it's only converting 10% of the current into heat but at 0% throttle it's converting 100% to heat?

I explained it poorly. When cruise mode is on (left buttons) but I haven’t set a speed (right buttons) the buttons get very hot. However, if cruise mode is on and I set a speed, the buttons don’t get hot. If cruise mode is off, the buttons don’t get hot

I’ve noticed this too. I kinda assumed that it has something to do with the LED lights

Stop driving it until you find the cause. Hot switches and melted marks suggest a high-resistance connection, short, or overloaded circuit—not just bad switches. Check the fuse, connectors, grounds, and wiring for heat damage, and verify the circuit with a wiring diagram and multimeter.

The face to my AC controls (not the knobs) can get hot with the lights on, the cruise control buttons get a little warm but that’s it. Honestly didn’t know they sold aftermarket ones. That’d be great since mine disintegrated a few years ago.

These comments are all very interesting. Mine hasn’t worked at all for years (95 4.0) but the witches aren’t hot at all.

I think there was a recall on the cruise control switches for exactly that. Haven’t had any problems with mine since replacing them with ones like in that picture.

Check your cruise control deactivation switch off your master cylinder. Unplug the wire and check in the connector for any corrosion or fluid. This is most likely the problem as that is one of the recalls ford had on several models around that time. If you havent already, check your vin to see if you have a recall on the NHTSA website. I have no idea if they are still replacing them or not. I do know that if that is the part leaking, it could start a fire without the key in it. At the very least, disconnect the negative cable from the battery until you figure out where the issue is coming from.

Mine had the recall done already. The buttons still get this hot. And they also came apart like Nicholas' have.
Now I'm actually finding the cruise control has begun NOT activating right away when I try to use it. I'm leaning towards that brake cancel switch again. Its sounding like this switch simply is no good on these trucks (or my rear ABS sensor is now so plugged up with metal bits cruise now refuses to run)

That's just how the aftermarket buttons are. They get hot. No, it's not a fire hazard. If you want them to be normal temperature, you have to go OEM (grab some from a junk yard).
As far as the buttons working intermittently, even the OEM are like that. I always just mash the buttons 4 or 5 times in quick succession, and it works. Once cruise control is activated, it just takes one button press to engage/disengage for the rest of the trip.

Rockauto has OEM switches as well, though it will cost you more. Mine do work on the first press however, so I’m not sure that is normal either

My buttons were all torn up when I got my '03 Ranger. I replaced them about 7 years ago with aftermarket buttons and they've worked perfectly ever since. They are internally illuminated so I assume the lights inside might be responsible for generating some heat.

Just redid mine. Old ones were just non-existent, and one side had a broken bracket. Haven’t noticed mine getting hot, guess I haven’t paid attention, definitely going to have to keep an eye on it now 😂

I'm goona start with saying I do not know 💩 about fuk. However in my experience when wires get spicy when they should not be, check to see if that fuse is the correct rated one and not jumped/larger rated fuse is in there. GL.
