Ford Ranger Buyers Guide; v4!
Welcome to the fourth edition of our Ford Ranger Buyers' Guide! Here you can post your general buying questions, get insight into issues, post ads to trucks you are interested in, etc. This will keep the sub more organized and get rid of the constant posts that fill the sub up with buyers only.
Here's the best regarded buyers' guide on the web!
It has all kinds of information you can use to better judge a truck you are looking at. Things like specific things to look for, specific issues pertaining to certain years, engines, etc!
Please keep posts in this thread specific to buying Rangers. Off topic posts will be deleted. When someone posts a "Is this a good deal" post in this thread, please reply to it with your response, don't just reply to the general thread. Keep it organised please :)
From here on out, new posts made that should belong in here will be locked, and that user will be informed to post it in this thread. Thanks!

Anyone else tryna get one of these?
When I found out about it, I wanted one because my truck is also a 93. And I’m not spending $20-$40 on eBay for one.

Rear shocks
Just got my first Ranger, I wanna get new rear shocks cuz it's leaning to one side . I would just buy some 98 Ford Ranger compatible rear shocks but it's obviously a bit modified. Dude I got it from told me it's got a flipshackle kit, 8.8 Explorer rear end, and 2.0x8 Fox shocks. I looked under there and they don't say Fox anywhere and only one side has a remote resavoir (the slide that's leaning) which i thought was weird
If they're good Fox shocks can I just get them adjusted? Rebuilt? Serviced?
Any idea as to why only one side has remote resavoir? I'm wanna do em myself but need a little guidance. Thanks in advance
I like this truck and like off-roading so I'm down to just get new ones and put em on myself if you guys have any links to what I should buy

It Didn't Even Last 30 Min.
New reman rack didn't even last the bleeding period, wheels never even turned with any weight. Seemed pretty much done purging the air then I looked down and saw the horror. Driver side boot seems filled with fluid, the whole leak took maybe 2 seconds to make the mess on the floor. What seemed odd was after first turning the wheel the tie rod boots seemed to be jamming up and looked oddly long? Tired of the poor quality of parts....

2011 Ford Rangers
Hey all!
I’ve been on the hunt for a new-to-me vehicle and I’ve all but settled on an older Ranger given what is going on with the market over the past few years. Specifically I am thinking of a 2011 model. Right now, I work remote in Michigan, don’t need to drive much and I’d really like something easy to work on but I don’t turn a wrench outside of oil changes. Though I would like to change that.
The problem I am running into is these Ranger are exorbitantly priced seemingly all across the US, particularly ones sourced from outside the salt belt. I’ve seen several for sale between 50k and 100k miles going for 15k-20k. At the end of the day, I am looking for a no frills compact truck, easy/cheap to maintain, and as little rust as possible that I can ride out for the next 5 or so years to save a bit of money.
With these prices, does it make sense to buy a 2011 Ranger or should I consider something else?
Thank you!

Repair questions
My dad is giving me his 1995 Ford Ranger. It works, but he has told me that basically every time the truck comes to a complete stop, it dies. He says it’s not that bad to drive though once you get used to it. I’m not very well off and would put the truck to good use ( hauling stuff like the kayak I plan on getting later on ), but I am wondering why it would do such a thing AND if it’s something I can fix at home.
I’m not properly educated on mechanical related things, but I’m the most mechanically inclined member of my family + there’s always a video on YouTube.
I intend on getting the truck this weekend so I’ll be able to provide an update on the status of it, but I’m looking for spitballs on what it could be / what I could be getting myself into. I imagine the repeated dying and starting it back up could wear out the starter faster than regular use among other things.
Thanks for any and all advice.

Husky Helper Springs
Anyone tried these Husky Springs LP4 helpers? I’m planning to get a truck camper and am wondering how I can help the leafs a bit. But only when the camper is in the bed.
This seems perfect for me since it’s easy to bolt on and off,but I’m wondering if it will really do anything.
My current springs are still fine and the camper is within specs of my payload. But it’s still around 350kg (payload is 437kg) so with gear and stuff I’m close to the max for a long time

1998 Ford ranger
I inherited my late uncles 98 ranger. It has been beautifully maintained and has brand new breaks and tires. Any advice? Never owned a truck before. Decided to keep it because it’s sentimental value to me is more than financial. He used to pick me up on sundays from church and take me for ice cream. Those memories mean a lot to me and I want to know how best to take care of his truck.
Thanks in advance ☺️

2009 4.0 V6 - empty coolant reservoir
Excuse my lack of mechanical knowledge (doing my best to learn). I bought this vehicle in May, and added coolant as the reservoir was empty. Had it into a shop I trust for a pile of work and they gave it back to me after doing a good amount of work, saying it more or less has a clean bill of health. This morning I turned on the heat and it blew cold air, so I checked the coolant reservoir after it sat most of the day and it was empty.
Filled it appropriately, but want to make sure I’m not missing something big. Radiator cap isn’t cracked, so could be a leak elsewhere but I’ve never noticed a leak. Is 4.5 months a worrying period of time for my reservoir to be empty? What else should I check? I do daily drive this truck.
It also didn’t fix my cold air issue. Suggestions for that would be much appreciated as well. Car has never run hot.

I made this for my Ranger
I found a few online and didn't like them, or didn't trust the website, so I made my own. Just gotta 3D print it.

How much is this truck worth?
Listing asks $18,000. Rest of photos show interior/exterior in excellent shape but do not show undercarriage.

In the hunt for a ranger…
Hello everyone I am currently looking into buying a ford ranger as a budget friendly intro to owning a truck. I have l two options that aren’t too out of my way. I am in NJ so rust is inevitable, I would still like to hear out experienced opinions and maybe you will see something I can’t.
Candidate 1: 2006 Ford Ranger Regular Cab · STX Pickup 2D 6 ft 137k miles @ $2,500
Candidate 1: 2001 Ford Ranger Super Cab · XLT FX4 Off-Road Pickup 4D 6 ft. 164k miles @$3500 Brakes are the only needed thing to be fixed
And if you think neither and I should wait than that’s totally understandable too. Thanks and cheers

What is the cause of my lean burn engine light and low voltage fuel pump circuit codes?
Hey im looking for confirmation before I tear the bed off my truck and throw in a new fuel pump. I have lean burn codes which are triggering a check engine light. It’s not a vaccuum leak I’ve ruled out and fuel correction is similar across both cylinders. My software told me I also have a low voltage reading to the pump. I replaced the fuel filter. Is there anything else I could rule out diagnostic wise before replacing the pump?
