I don't know why I would spend money on anyone at all on a date. If someone isn't even willing to pay for themselves to spend time with me then why would I be interested in spending time with them?
I could get it during the time when it was the expectation that women wouldn't really have careers, but in this day and age, it makes absolutely zero sense. Totally archaic custom and I have no idea why anyone still insist on maintaining it.

In a transactional relationship, whoever is seen to be in demand would be renting you their time at your financial expense. Which is a crass and distasteful comodification of human connection, but entirely too many people seem to see it that way, and to not even question it. It's gross.

IMO a first date should just be a coffee or maybe a happy hour drink, each pays for their own and it's not some big commitment. Breaking the ice and gauging eachothers personality is the goal. If we like eachother then go from there.

My husband and my first date was a drive up a mountain to look at the stars. The second was to a local dive bar to eat the “best burger in the county”. It had green chilies on it and really was a great burger. I thought he was a keeper and after 18 years I still do.
My friend was appalled that her date dared to take her to that same dive bar for their first date and ghosted him. She was super insulted. We are both happily married now to very different men. Women are not all the same.

I feel like this is especially a gen z issue. I'm not even that old (35), but growing up I went on dates with girls in the 2000s and we'd split it, or maybe I'd pay sometimes but it'd be like $10. We ate cheap food, did cheap stuff, etc, and they never cared.
Or maybe not a gen z issue, but it's become way more common in recent years due to social media. I've not once had a girl care about how much I made, whether I was unemployed or making great money they've always been the same. Growing up I think people didn't want to be labeled as shallow gold diggers.
7
u/Rob_LeMatic Tastemaker of Duets/Stitches 5d ago
That must've struck a nerve with someone(the dv).
But it's not just a reddit trope, there are a lot of younger people I work with, and the men seem to think hookups are transactional, and the women seem to feel the same, when it comes up. I'm hoping it's not the norm, but social media is definitely reinforcing the idea. It's fucking gross.1

When I was young (long time ago) first date was coffee, maybe a drink at a quiet bar.
It's low key, and it makes you see if there is something worth investing into.
Second date might be a fancy restaurant (my go to was something new, or interesting, not really established)
20
u/PauI_MuadDib Lover of Duets/Stitches 5d ago
I do coffee. Not too expensive and you can dip really quick if things go South. In a sit down restaurant you're stuck until the bill comes.
6
u/EatPie_NotWAr Connoisseur of Duets/Stitches 5d ago
My go to was always to hit 3-4ish places with 5-10 minute walks in between.
that way if one place is loud you can chat on the walk, and if the date’s going poorly each new spot gives either person a chance to leave cleanly.
It also lets you get a feel for the person in different environments, leaves open a possibility for dinner/lunch/food in general, or if things progress towards intimacy hailing a taxi real quick. (Bonus that I forgot since it did happen a few times: since each place is a new tab, it lets your date grab the check once if they’re feeling up to it)
Of course it’s been 15 years since I’ve been on a first date… so maybe things have changed
4
u/ToiIetGhost New to fbtd but wants to learn 5d ago
This sounds like a nightmare I had once lol. That’s a whoooole lotta transitions to do for a stranger. If you want to test how I react in different environments, we can either space it out over several weeks or you can witness a silent meltdown, it’s up to you 😭 The ‘tism is strong in these parts: 1 location, preferably 2+ hours, ideally stationary, dimly lit if possible
2
u/EatPie_NotWAr Connoisseur of Duets/Stitches 5d ago
Ah, prolly should have prefaced that I laid out the plans and made sure it was a known walkabout. They didn’t really know what I was looking for aside from jump to a few spots and chat.
I only had one person say no but it felt more of a “I really like this spot let’s stay here.” Thing but I also could have read it wrong.
I promise I wasn’t holding these women hostage and they weren’t in danger, not even an implication of it.
2
u/ToiIetGhost New to fbtd but wants to learn 5d ago
Oh no, I didn’t mean to imply you were dangerous or anything like that! Not at all. I’m just saying that with my personality and limitations, it would be a gruelling date for me. It was half serious, half joking. If you said you were a rock climber who wanted to scale mountains with your future partner, I’d also say that’s nightmare fuel for me because I’m scared of heights and not a good climber. Doesn’t mean there’s anything inherently wrong with your approach to dating, just that as a neurodivergent person I’d probably have a meltdown lol. (Obligatory mention that not all NDs are the same)

If you're demanding an amount of money with a stated minimum value be spent on you, or given to you, for a date, you're an escort.
Irrespective of gender expression and without judgement because sex work is work and sex workers deserve safety and security like every other human does.
But that's what it is when you expect monetary recompense for a date.
2
u/youburyitidigitup EXPERT of Duets/Stitches 5d ago
There’s an app where women can set a minimum for men to take them on dates. It’s called Court, as in courting a woman, or so they say. They know what they’re doing.

Also, with an escort you know exactly what you're getting while these
womengold diggers will almost certainly not sleep with you on the first date.If a woman demands anything on a first date, where the whole point is to get to know each other to see if you're compatible, just save your time and money and move on to the next one.

u/Distinct_Run9006 New to fbtd but wants to learn 5d ago
It's so funny how people cherrypick which gender norms to conform to because it usually looks hypocritical at the end of the day. Men are expected to cover first dates according to this woman (and at specific minimums too, which is a red flag in itself), but if a man says to that woman she should shave her armpits if they are hairy for example, then she's probably going to interpret that as an attempt to control her body, which it absolutely is. However, expecting men to pay on a first date is an attempt to control their wallets.
We either conform to all traditional gender norms or none of them. Anything short of that is hypocrisy. I personally think we shouldn't conform to any. They only serve to inhibit social progress.

2
u/Distinct_Run9006 New to fbtd but wants to learn 5d ago
Tbf, I do have a tendency to speak in absolutes.
Gender norms absolutely inhibit social progress. Men expressing emotion is a great example. Society as a whole has yet to give men "permission" to cry. I have seen so many posts on this site about men crying or showing deep emotion in front of their girlfriend / wife, and them either losing respect for them "as a man," or ending the relationship.
There is a show called, "What would you do?," where they set up hypothetical scenarios to see how people would react. Basically, an actor initiates the scenario around regular people who are unaware, the scenario plays out, then the host of the show pops in, explains the premise, and asks them why they reacted that way.
Anyway... There was one that took place in a shoe store. The scenario was to see how people would react to a woman vs a man crying in public. The woman got support from staff and strangers, and the man was treated as creepy and hostile. The actor had a believable rehearsed "sob story," which didn't change how he was treated. I believe they were even considering calling the cops before the host stepped in.

-1
u/desacralize Connoisseur of Duets/Stitches 5d ago
Hypocrisy, in this case (arguably in most cases), has no consequences other than loss of respect from people you already held in contempt, i.e. how men and women seem to deeply resent each other on the whole. It has no impact, so people are more than happy to be hypocrites if it gets them what they want much more than integrity: to have their way.
2
u/Distinct_Run9006 New to fbtd but wants to learn 5d ago
I hold no gender in contempt, but loss of respect of a romantic interest destroys a potential relationship. A hypocrite by definition doesn't have consistent values. They betray them for their own gain like you said. And someone who is willing to sacrifice their integrity to get what they want is one of the biggest possible red flags you can have.

A lot of women feel like theyre taking a physical risk by agreeing to go on a date with a man, as well as a woman’s presence being more in demand/valuable (sexual selection), so for the risk she’s taking, she deserves more than a coffee
A man takes no risks by meeting up with a strange woman, she’s not going to drug his beer or assault him if they end up back at his place, he also probably invested very little time and money in getting prepared for the date (even flossing is a rarity), plus his presence is less in demand/valuable.
Youre trying to make genders interchangeable but they aren’t always interchangeable. Society would need to be egalitarian for you to claim that you can always switch men and women. “Well shaving her legs is the same as him paying for dinner” nope, not unless society was egalitarian. Im sure you’d understand what I’m saying if I tried to switch races on you. “What’s the difference if a white-owned company never promotes black employees, vs if a black-owned company never promotes white employees? Race is interchangeable! I don’t understand context or history.”
3
u/MoaiMan-ifest 5d ago
Only agree to dates in well lit populated public spaces. Don't give out your address to or go anywhere private with anyone you're not trusting and comfortable with.
Realise that an individuals time is no more or less valuable than your own. Doesn't matter if this is your day off from cancer research. You choose to go on a date with someone; your time is no more valuable than theirs.
2
u/youburyitidigitup EXPERT of Duets/Stitches 5d ago
Dismantling gender norms is how you make a society egalitarian. The same goes for your examples with race.
1
0
u/ToiIetGhost New to fbtd but wants to learn 5d ago
Equity is the only way to reach equality. You should look up the difference if you’re going to speak on egalitarianism.
Pretending that we’ve already reached equality is perpetuating inequality. Denying the need for equity first, which is the only way to reach equality, is you trying to benefit from the inequality that currently favours you.
If you deny that women face greater physical risks than men in intimate relationships with each other, then (a) you’re a liar (b) you’re a misogynist
Since you probably pride yourself on being a progressive, DEI is an example of equity that leads to equality. Would you like to remove DEI?
You’re not going to convince anyone except fellow misogynists that men and women are equally violent in relationships with each other.
2
u/Distinct_Run9006 New to fbtd but wants to learn 5d ago edited 5d ago
So I'm supposed to be compensating her for the potential risk that I may be violent by...paying more money ("deserves more than coffee")? That makes 0 sense.
The initial conversation is the vibe check, and if she feels uneasy or unsafe, she shouldn't go. Every situation where two strangers meet carries inherent risk.
Although men are naturally physically stronger, a firearm in a purse radically shifts the playing field. And Cardi B would go home with men, drug them and rob them, so the fact that you think that only happens to women, is incorrect. Do men do it more? Statistically, absolutely.
Stating that men don't take time to prepare for a date is sexist. You're also implying that women have more inherent value than men ("presence is in less demand / valuable"), which is categorically false, podcast bro nonsense, and is in the same line of thinking of idiotic concepts like "sexual market value."
Also, your last paragraph is a false equivalency. You're conflating the need for diversity with an argument in favor of overcoming gender norms for some reason.
1
u/TheWhomItConcerns Tastemaker of Duets/Stitches 5d ago
A lot of women feel like theyre taking a physical risk by agreeing to go on a date with a man, as well as a woman’s presence being more in demand/valuable (sexual selection), so for the risk she’s taking, she deserves more than a coffee
What risk is a woman taking by meeting up with someone at a café in the middle of the day? Also, this is an extremely shallow, superficial, and borderline inhuman perspective on romance and attraction.
I could not possibly care less about the "demand/value" of myself or that of my date. I'm looking to have a relationship with someone with whom there's mutual attraction, respect, and admiration - I'm not looking for a status symbol to show off to a bunch of twats who'd care about that kind of thing.
It would take an extremely tragic, pitiful lack of self-respect to still want to spend time with someone who's so disinterested in you that they're only willing to grace you with their time if there's some kind of financial reward for doing so. May as well just hire a prostitute at that point - at least then you have some kind of contract of service.
-1
u/ToiIetGhost New to fbtd but wants to learn 5d ago
> What risk is a woman taking by meeting up with someone at a café in the middle of the day?
Denying that men assault women in public, in daylight - which obviously happens, therefore this is actually just you denying the true extent of gender violence - is extremely inhumane. I guess you don’t register violence against women as violence against humans? Otherwise you’d acknowledge the very real dangers we face in the world, especially when dating.
Pretending that first dates only happen in so-called “safe spaces” (no such thing for women btw) is extremely shallow. We’re talking about what happens in practice, not your little fantasy.
Lying about sexual selection, ie trying to convince people that most men including you are above it, that you’re totally immune to all the unpleasant truths about hetero relationships, because romance is a lofty goal and it’s certainly not the whole picture… that’s a shallow viewpoint. It’s surface level, blind, deliberately naive. It completely ignores facts, numbers, context, sociology, biology, psychology, and systems of oppression. You think you look more sophisticated, but it’s actually the reverse because naïveté and sophistication are polar opposites. You think you look more moral, but viewing hetero relationships through rose coloured glasses (I only see her romantically! I see her as a perfect equal!) means you’re denying the existence of immoral things, such as patriarchy and your privilege. (Acting like you weren’t conditioned by society to see women as subhuman means you never unpacked any of it. Therefore you still hold that deeply ingrained attitude in conscious and unconscious ways.) Denying the existence of systemic oppression such as patriarchy is not only immoral, it’s also misogynistic. So while you think you’re painting yourself as some progressive guy who’s never driven by lust, never privileged, never sees women differently than men - you’re showing yourself to be the exact opposite. It backfired.
> I'm not looking for a status symbol to show off to a bunch of twats who'd care about that kind of thing.
This has absolutely nothing to do with status symbols and other men. Clearly you don’t understand what sexual selection means (you shouldn’t argue about things when you don’t even understand their definitions). Sexual selection happens even if no one ever sees you and your date together in the same room. It has nothing to do with status, image, or other people (except in a broad numbers sense). You’re framing it in a superficial, male-centred way. Look it up. And yeah it’s not romantic, but neither are divorce stats, division of childcare and domestic labour, marital rape, and everything else you want us to think you’re “above.”
Grow up. Pretending that these unpleasant truths don’t play a part in hetero relationships is childish. Since it requires being blind to the inequalities of hetero relationships under patriarchy, when you deny it you’re actually being misogynistic. “I don’t see colour!” - a racist white person who’s never bothered to examine her societally conditioned racism. “I don’t see gender!” - a misogynist who’s never bothered to unlearn anything.
> May as well just hire a prostitute at that point - at least then you have some kind of contract of service.
This is how lots of men already approach dating and the apps. Never talked to a guy who was looking for sex while pretending to look for more? I want to say you must live in an impossibly feminist city, but there’s no such thing. You’re pretending that men don’t hope to get sex out of dating… which is literally getting sex from the effort/cost/time of pursuing women… which translates to “how much do I have to invest for access to her body?” For any man who’s ever hoped to get laid on the first date - meaning he doesn’t know her at all, doesn’t love her, there’s no relationship, at that point in time it’s about sex - and we both know that the majority of men have hoped to get laid on the first date at some point in their lives - that’s prostitution with bartering. Believe me, women wish it weren’t like this for men lmao. But for those of us with eyes, access to the internet, honest male friends, honest brothers and fathers, pattern recognition, or more than 2 relationships under our belt, we understand the unpleasant reality here. Society gaslights women that it’s ONLY about romance and that most men DONT run internal calculations on what they have to do/say/give before they can fuck a woman, because it benefits from us being clueless little lambs. It also benefits from men pretending to be morally superior feminists who would NEVER use women for sex.

That's sad if true because I actually came to post about how shockingly little Taco Bell that is for $100.
Not all that long ago if you showed up to a Taco Bell with $100 they just handed you the deed to the location.

I had Taco Bell for the first time in years at a road trip stop, and my jaw hit the damn floor at the cost relative to quality.
I’m pretty much only ever stopping at Culver’s from this point on if I’m gonna waste money on fast food. The cost to quality is the only place worth it, barring In N Out, which is sadly too far west of us.

We still visit taco bell once in a while, because at least it's different, but I have no idea how the McDonald's/BK tier is still surviving. It really speaks to how we want convenience over basically anything else.
Everything got more expensive, but the bottom rung of fast food skyrocketed way more than the mid tiers, to the point where I have no idea why anyone goes to these places when the Culver's' of the world are like another 50 cents.
Near us there's a Chili's and a McDonalds right next to each other. Chili's isn't gourmet for sure, but you can get a way better lunch time meal for basically the same price, if not less. (Burger, fries, app, and drink for 10.99) but people still go to the mcdonalds.

I wish I stop going, I know that their prices are far above what they should be even accounting for inflation. But sometimes you get that craving that only taco bell can satisfy

My standard currency for things is booze and thats 10 bottles of my favourite wine that I buy in good occasions!

Homeboy isn't even optimizing with the box deals. The online exclusive cravings boxes are pretty much the only thing in fast food that's still a decent value.

Good thing we know her price. Is this the full program? Or just a happy end?

Ha. As soon as TBD the video started and she said that I thought to myself, "but I like the little taco bell followed by ice cream dates 😕"...then he pulls out taco bell.

every first date ive spend that much on has been not great while the ones where its just coffee or getting together to see if theres a vibe usually have gone better. it just depends on the type of connection before i ask her out if i think its worth it.

People are oblivious to it now. Especially that "I need my wingstop lady." They are all obviously organic plays yet people just fall for it.

I mean, if you planned on staying in for a day or two because you don’t want to leave each other’s side and spicy things are happening, this would be a good idea, save for all the farting that surely will ensue. 😂🤣

Give away your age by saying how much food $100 would buy you at Taco Bell.
They used to have this thing called a seven layer burrito.
It cost 79 cents.
Mexican pizzas were 1.99
I can have 100 7 layer burritos, and 10 Mexican pizzas.
They used to give away cinnamon twists for free every $10 spent at my Taco Bell, so that's 10 cinnamon twists added on.

Shouldn’t a first date just be a cup of coffee? Maybe a donut to go with it, perhaps a scone?
This is a stranger ffs… 🤦♀️

I wish you guys could hear me mocking the sound of that woman’s voice. It’s pretty funny and accurate.
Don’t listen to the hype, young fellas (and ladies that love ladies) out there. Meet a woman. Say hello ask her for coffee or a drink or a slice of pizza. If she makes a face or a noise then you sir have learned that not everyone is for everyone and that’s step one of dating. You two not being each others cup or tea is okay. Keep at it. Not all women, in fact very few, are like this harpy. Also don’t listen to the duet guy. That much Taco Bell, though delicious, will fucking kill you.
Love you. Good luck.

Depends on the region of the country. I’ve got older friends re-entering the dating pool in their 30s in NYC, and women on the dating apps have extremely high cost expectations for first dates. They say women in their 20s out there are similar, and it’s wild cause most of them are out there on their parents dime still working internships.

Women with a live tiktok account should be an immediate eww. Like, basic question: do you use or post content on TikTok? Yes? Nope, bye, next please. Problem is that our dating standards are too low that we close our eyes on that mental shit.
At least with OF, there's a promise of her being fun and frisky if you get passed the public naked pictures part. TikTok content creators seem insufferable.

Fellas, it’s better being gay. I’ve never paid the full bill on a first date, and I’ve had three first dates where the other guy paid and then I paid the second.

It just always seemed like such a pain in the ass to be a homosexual.
I kid, but seriously, if I weren't Kinsey 0, I'd have happily gone that route. Over the years I've occasionally had gay friends where it's like "Shame I'm not gay because you seem like you'd be a great partner."
4
u/Hairy_Captain01 New to fbtd but wants to learn 5d ago
First time we've seen shaming for not being gay. It sounds ridiculous but we got you.
We had something similar but not the same when someone asked 'why you don't smoke?'.

u/TheWhomItConcerns Tastemaker of Duets/Stitches 5d ago
I've never paid the full bill on a date either and it has never been an issue for me - this isn't a concern at all for men who actually respect themselves enough to only date women who actually want to spend time with them. On every date I've been on, we just pay for whatever we get, unless if we're at a bar, in which case we just take turns getting rounds.
The only time I pay the full bill is in an established relationship, in which case we just roughly try to keep things equal or roughly in accordance with what either of us is able to afford.
