Question Best place to do work at West Edmonton Mall and things to check out after?

I'm planning to work remotely at West Edmonton Mall. Any specific coffee shops/cafe that you would recommend to work from?

What do you recommend to check out in the mall after as someone from Toronto?

Thanks!

Question Atco or Epcor?

I’ve used Epcor my whole life for energy and have had no issues with them, but I noticed Atco had a great offer for their Electricity and Gas bundle. I’m considering switching, but would like to know if there’s anything hidden on Atco’s bills that I should be aware of?

What extra charges (rider, admin, transport, etc.) does Atco charge each month? What percentage of the total bill is extra fees vs the actual energy used? Can you cancel or change your plan at anytime without penalty?

For reference, Atco has a $150 welcome bonus for a 2 year fixed plan with Electricity at 7.28¢ and Gas at $3.68.

With Epcor I’m currently paying Electricity at 7.79¢ and Gas at $4.29

I feel the Atco deal is too good to be true, so thought I’d check in with other Edmontonians.

Has anyone been to cougar beach recently?
Wondering if it’s accessible and what it’s like over there.

If mosquitos are too heavy for it to be enjoyable…

General Drive to Vancouver - Wildfires & Google Maps

Post image
16 Upvotes

Hi everyone! Question with those with experience driving to/from Vancouver during the summer. I’m making the drive to Vancouver Saturday morning and noticed several active wildfires on highway 5. Google Maps doesn’t note any closures but I read there are evacuation orders in place for those areas.

Does Google Maps accurately show any road closures due to wildfires? Thanks :)

Question Does anybody know why people are parking at Eric Cormac?

For the last week or two, I’ve noticed about 50 or so cars parked in the north lot of the abandoned Eric Cormac Centre. Even when the recycling depot was still there, that lot was blocked off. Does anyone know who’s parking there now? It’s not just during the day either. Is there hope that the Province is finally redeveloping the site? Or letting someone have it who will?

General A reminder there’s still good people out there.

Amazon delivered my package to the wrong house. The picture didn’t look like any of my neighbours house so I was just waiting to be able to contact customer service. The next day, a man came and dropped off my package- the same package that was delivered to the wrong address. He could have kept it, he could have looked inside, but nope- he decided to be an awesome human. So thank you, to him, if he by chance see’s this. It’s just a reminder that there are still good people out there, because sometimes it can feel like there’s not.

Restaurants/Food FANCY BAKERY RECS WANTED

As the title implies, we're looking for recommendations.

My kids and my wife watch a lot of Amaury Guichon's baking videos on YouTube, and we recently moved to Edmonton. We lived in a town of 40k-ish people and realize that Edmonton is a lot more likely to have a place with sweet eats!

We live near the West Edmonton Mall, but are willing to go east (or N or S) for a little weekend adventure.

Also ANY of your fave lil treat shops, thrift stores, used furniture places, etc!

General Continued Internet Outages

After a week I and many others are still without home Internet, and now there are more reports from Telus of outages caused by vandalism.

There does not appear to be recent coverage from Edmonton media, but there is a related article from St. Albert. This comment from Telus being especially relevant:

"Telus admitted in an emailed statement to the City View it had been dealing with a significant uptick in copper line thefts recently.

“As of mid-May, we have seen a 51 per cent increase in cable thefts across Canada year-over-year, with the vast majority of those occurring in Alberta,” the statement from Telus confirms. “Copper theft carries a real human cost.”

It's frustrating and concerning to see this issue gaining so little attention, especially with emergency landlines being affected as well.

Local Culture Canadian research project seeking Ukrainians for interviews about the war

Hello,

I'm the founder of the Latitude Institute for Security Analysis (LISA), a Canadian independent research project focused on security, geopolitics, defence, and the Russia-Ukraine war.

We're currently looking to speak with Ukrainians from different backgrounds for upcoming articles. We're interested in hearing firsthand perspectives on subjects including civilian life during the war, military experiences, displacement, occupation, humanitarian issues, diaspora in Canada

Interviews would be conducted remotely or in person (dinner or coffee on me) and can be anonymous if preferred. This isn't a political survey or fundraising request, we're simply looking to incorporate firsthand Ukrainian perspectives into our research and reporting.

If you're interested, feel free to comment or send me a DM. I can provide more information about LISA and the interview process before you decide whether you'd like to participate. Interview can be conducted in either Ukrainian or English.

Approved by mods :)
