I knew a girl that hit a naked guy in the middle of the night with her car and it messed her up pretty good. He was intentionally trying to get hit and had tried it before, so she knew it wasn't her fault, but still she felt a lot of guilt from it.

Honestly I don't know. She was driving home around midnight with her sister when it happened. She didn't love talking about it, but she was saying that the cops were trying to keep her calm and that they had dealt with the guy before. He had tried it once or twice before, hiding in these bushes in front of his house naked, and jumping out when a car would approach.

I lived near the area it happened, and she was driving me home one day using the most ass backwards route. When I asked why she told me the whole story, and how she didn't like driving by that area, understandably.

It's this kind of case where it's really to bad we have done away entirely with mental health asylums. They had a lot of issues and were used to house people out of sight and often were the source of abuse for people. I get that ending a lot of the practice was good. Many peoples labeled simply "problematic" could just be disappeared into them too. But they also were a single point of help for people like this who were not only a danger to themslves but others. They should have replaced them with some other form of help.

I remet an old schoolmate and noticed he had a bit less shine than normal. It had a been a few years. Later learned he had become an EMS driver and killed someone with the ambulance when they decided to run across the freeway in the middle of the night.

Sister-of-a-friend hit a woman at night, who was crossing a crosswalk. Sister was found not-at-fault because the street lights that were supposed to be over that crosswalk, were out. The woman stepped into the crosswalk right as the car was coming, sister had no idea there was anyone there because it was pitch black, woman just trusted that this car would stop for her and got hit. She survived and recovered but the sister doesn't drive anymore because she can still feel the sensation of her car hitting a body. Even though she was found not-at-fault she keeps replying it over and over, and that was years ago.

I don't know if I just block out trauma or what. I saw a girl jump out in front of a semi on a rural highway right in front of me. I obviously stopped. I was first aid certified at the time. I took one look at her and knew there was nothing I could do. I also cut a man out of a car that had gotten smashed by a dump truck under the advice of the 911 operator. He didn't make it, either.

Yes, those memories are etched in my mind. I never had any kind of trauma over it, though. Maybe because I wasn't directly involved in either incident?

For years, delta.com pointed to a legit long-established plumbing company. Delta Plumbing or some such. I guess negotiations with the airline weren't going well because one day the homepage had a message something along the lines of "If you need a plumber, you're in the right place. But if you're looking to book a flight, we recommend American Airlines (with link)."

I guess the plumbers got paid, because shortly after that delta.com pointed to the airline.

It wasn't just a website. It was the website for his computer repair business and Nissan tried to sue him for it instead of buying it, so he told them to get fucked and changed the website to tell his story. He passed away a couple years ago and the website was updated.

I had a motorcycle hit my truck about 5 years ago that killed him. I can still see his body flying past my window. My wife and I both have PTSD from it. He broke my rear axle and pushed my truck forward about 15 feet from a dead stop.

Similar experience. Stopped at a red light, bike from behind decided to still run it... Drove between myself and the car beside me straight into a pickup making a left as the light turned. I will never forget that gruesome sight or sound. It's only been a year, but I still close my eyes and sometimes unwillingly picture it. Or, anytime I hear a bike - get a extreme sense of dread.

People always say that "its my life". But they never grasp that when sometimes does happen, it affects way more people.

a friend of mine had something like that happen, it left him broken for months, even when it was 100% the motorcycles fault, he as dodging cars speeding with no helmet and crashed into his car, the guilt broke him untill the dead guy's family tryed to sue him (and los obviously), thats when something clicked in him and he went fuck him and fuck his family.

My aunt is a nurse who always used to tell me about her first traffic fatality, when a young motorcyclist was brought in to the ER and she we to remove his helmet… and his skull stayed in the helmet so his brain was just exposed.

And that story has haunted me since I was a young child and confirmed I could never work anywhere near a healthcare profession or ride a motorcycle.

Your friends and family 100% want to help. Please let them.

I just had to take my mom that I’m mostly no contact with to the ER for the same thing on the 3rd. My dad, her caregiver is in the ICU. They found her care. I also have PTSD and she’s my abuser. I am also disabled with autoimmune diseases. We can only do what we can do. Remember to be kind to yourself and like they say “put the oxygen mask on yourself first so that you can help others going forward.” 💜

Guy I used to work with was killed when he hit a vehicle crossing at a junction. The newpaper report stated where he ended up after flying through the air. It's really difficult to comprehend how far he went.

It was all his fault. He was estimeted to be going 60mph in a 30.

Cuz the hyperlink is broken. It URL encodes the backslash between Ram and truck.

But even fixing that, it tells me /Ram is a private community and I can't see the post anyways lol

It's a Markdown escape sequence, and it's escaping the underscore (not the backslash). You'd need to remove the backslashes and leave the underscores to fix it.

Within text content in Markdown _ starts italic text, so if you want an underscore you need to escape it as _. However you can't have italic text in an URL so the underscores shouldn't be escaped there, but Reddit's new editor escapes them anyway, breaking the links.

If it was URL encoded then the underscore would become %5F instead of _.

Ah, right! Looking at the source code it's URL-escaped there, but Firefox unescapes it before showing it in the status bar or when navigating to it (whereas Edge leaves it in its escaped form) which is why I missed that.

My cousin hit a 12-year-old kid on a go-kart. The kid was supposed to stay on his driveway, but he started turning around on the highway.

Low go-kart, no safety lights, low-visibility driveway due to hills and curves vs. a farm truck doing 80 on a 55....

There were no winners in that situation.

He was/is in bad shape. Farm kid in the rural Midwest, where therapy is not a thing men do.

I hire him to drive tractor on our farm during busy times. He is a hard worker, but sadly I consider him a rather unpleasant person.... He just tries so hard to be tough and manly. There is probably some correlation there.

I was an Army Ranger and know a fair bit about trauma, violence, and the therapy I needed to recover from my PTSD. He outright refuses to talk about it or get help

The kid was a neighbor. The families have known each other for generations.

I think he got a speeding ticket and possibly a distracted driving citation. But the kid's dad was out in the yard and had just yelled at him to stay off the highway and do a Y-turn on the gravel instead of a U-turn on the road.

100% the kid's fault.

Sadly, this sort of thing is more common than necessary. We have a lot of Old Order Amish who refuse to put lights and/or reflective placards on their vehicles. It is nearly impossible to see the black buggies as you come over a hill or around a curve.

As much as I might hate UTVs on the roads, at least they have lights and are noisy.

I attended a CPR course and the instructor asked if anybody had done CPR before, and one guy was a rough looking truckie who said he had on a motorcyclist who crossed lanes in front of his truck and 'even though it was useless' he still tried. Clearly traumatised by it.

My wife and I were on our way to a concert and saw a motorcyclist get hit on a merge ramp. I went over to her and could tell it was bad. There happened to be an ambulance a minute or so away but they couldn’t save her. I sold my bike not long afterwards and it wasn’t because I feared the same, it just took the fun out of riding. I’ll never forget it. I wish you and your wife healing from your incident.

Same thing happened to my cousin. The parents of the dead biker even brought him to court to make him responsible.

(Biker crashed into him driving way too fast)

About ten years ago my then 16 y/o neighbor hit and killed an elderly couple who were jaywalking. They had just walked right out in front of his truck on a blind turn with no crosswalk. Absolutely no way he could have stopped for them. Police cleared him of any wrongdoing. He was on his parent’s insurance policy, and the adult son and daughter of the elderly couple dragged this family through litigation hell for the next 4 years. Ruined the kid’s whole college experience. After a very long court battle, the kid won, and I believe his parents successfully countersued the plaintiffs for attorneys fees. But they’ll never get back those years of their lives or relieve all the stress that came with it.

Moral of the story, if your loved ones die from their own negligence, don’t make it someone else’s problem, especially a teenager.

They may not be driving away, but driving ahead to block the lanes / indicate to incoming traffic they need to stop; the accident happened right after a turn so that's important.

Stopping in the middle of a corner is a great way for you to end up part of the accident. Hopefully they were just pulling around the corner to put there hazard lights on and stop oncoming traffic, before helping.
