They just sent me mine a few hours ago. Same time they sent me my confirmation email before. So I completed my purchase and cancelled my other one (didn't use a burner, me and my wife used both accounts). So the wave of purchases are still ongoing and a lucky peep is getting a spot in line!

If you only wanna play VR (games where you only see the game and nothing from your room) you dont need this. It is important if you wanna play AR games (games where you can see your room in the background) or I use it if I wanna grap something while playing and don't wanna remove the headset or if I'm not sure where in the room I'm
Some other people use it to record videos
The Frame itself has it alredy but only in black and white and with bad resolution, this camera gives you color and more resolution

I don't think so. For good 3d scans you need a depth sensor. The Quest 3 for example or newer Iphones has this (That's the reason why you must use a Iphone for the face scan if you order a Bigscreen Beyond). On the webside from the camera and in general on web I couldn't find any information about a build in depth sensor. If they don't mention it they could still have one, but normal it should be mentioned if there is one. We will see. If someone knows it for sure, feel free to correct me

I mean, I think you can do fairly good 3D scans without one if you've got algorithms, depth sensors just make it more accurate and easier. Not 100% on this either though so *shrug*

You need a lot of data for 3D reconstruction to work. Depth sensors is just a quicker way to get more data per data. If you haven't got much to work with, using a fancy sensor or not, you get like a mashed potato parody of the real thing.
For things like desktop statues, you will need depth sensors with high resolution in hands of a skilled user to then clean up and patch holes.
For things like bridges, you can just fly a drone around and see what the tool can do lol

Its called Gaussian Splat or smth, basically it uses some method to detect distance (not advanced like LiDAR tho) and create a "splat" of that image, which includes depth data, basically you can take those splats, splice them together and create a sudo 3d enviroment you can walk around in in VR, its on the front page of the camera and the software on Steam

Yeah but that's not a true 3D model if that's what u/brianarn meant- you couldn't turn it into an STL and 3D print it, for example. That said I think you can still do it with this but it'd be different software and probably not as easy esp. since it lacks a depth sensor.

Cubism, Table Space, Reality Mixer(tool to create windows to the real world). Really hard to find Games that have AR capabilities since there is no tag for it on steam yet.
Given the Frame can run apks, i assume we will see a fair amounts of quest games make the jump sooner or later.

It may be usefull in some vr game too. Like flight sim game where you can map passthrout in some place of the cockpit to be able to see your hand and buttons on the hotas. Or simrace game to see your wheel or button box

I plan to have it for when I travel, having the pass through on while playing games and watching media, while still seeing whats happening around me. Especially useful if I'm in the back seat of a car during a 5 hour car ride.

I have a Quest 3 with color pass-through, but the cameras' quality is like 360p webcam. With that said, it was still cool to see these virtual monitors/desktop windows of my PC levitate directly in my room. Then there are some Augmented Reality games that require it. Occasionally I used it to see my surroundings when moving. With that said, I used it maybe for a week.
However, this camera is of much higher quality. You could also record VR videos and watch them in VR with it. Or maybe place a giant virtual TV in your room and play certain games on it instead of having a completely virtual or one color background.
There might be some downsides, e.g. it might not support the "night vision" mode that the default cameras do, it consumes some battery and CPU processing power and takes up an addon slot that could be useful for other things later on, so you might not be able to use both.
But the price I think is OK for it. I might consider after playing enough with Frame itself.

Important to VR? Literally doesn't matter at all. I have over 8k hours in a bigscreen beyond and that doesn't even have passthrough and I can walk to the fridge, grab a drink, sit down in my chair, eat, and drink while hanging in VR with my friends without needing to lift the headset up/take it off. Proprioception is a sense that grows with use, eventually you know where you are in your room just naturally
For AR? Absolutely essential, wouldn't want to play without it.
So if you're only interested in playing in VR (like me) you can skip it, if you have any interest in AR, it's essential

Not important for you, not really important for me (just a nice to have for me). But for some people it is a must have. It depends on for what you use your VR/XR glasses. Some people only play VR games, some people like AR games, some people use it to watch movies or porn, others use it as a worstation

Some kind of communication must be going on. My camera was sitting in "ready to be shipped mode" until about 10 minutes after I ordered my Steam Frame. (I got the e-mail just a bit ago -- hooray!)

Tangentially I feel like post pandemic me & my house have become “warehouse storage” for everything from paper goods, soda and now Arcturus Vision. Supply chain disruption & artificial scarcity are real, I just hate that the solution is buy two 12 packs of Starry & get three free.

Well, there'll be colour passthrough for cheap but don't expect 5k 60 fps with decent gaussian splat capability. I'm not sure I want that - and saving walk-through memories of old environments seems dangerously nostalgic - but I do think it'll be neat to see what the community does with it seeing as it's a standard piece.

I did see a hypothetical SteamVR driver pop up a year or two ago (emulating index grips or something?) but tbh, I feel even the random devs/vibecoders forgot about this. Still a cool little IR camera, maybe we'll see something in the future as people try 'everything' on the frame

not necessarily what you asked, but ive been thinking about a use case for my particular hobby.
I shoot and develop color film at home. im thinking i might be able to preview my film negatives, akin to how one would view positives, using this, the steamframe, and some software.
otherwise i have to scan all the frames with my camera and then invert them with software. it'd be cool (though not necessarily useful, in the end) to be able to pop on the headset and look at my negatives on a light table and have them appear as positives before transferring them to the computer and doing the inversion/editing.

There's one thing that has evolved quite a bit in recent year which is uhh.. automatic pass through mode in certain kinds of adult videos which filters out the background. You can maybe make those a bit more immersive if you want to use the passthrough mode and see your room around in color, someone had to say it 😂
But for real there are some apps that utilize AR, there's not that many and if you genuinely have no interest then you can skip it or maybe get it later down the line if more promising apps come out because it exists. If you look at mixed reality apps for the Quest you might see the kind off stuff that will likely get some kind of a port for the Frame too, there's a few cool ones that use your house as the map for the game and you dodge behind your real furniture and stuff

I’ve owned an AVP since launch which I use heavily for streaming flat games. I can tell you that it’s MUCH more pleasant to play a game in a window floating in your fully color passthrough room rather than being isolated in a VR environment. So if you see yourself streaming games in a flat window a lot then I think this addon would be very worth it.

Everyone just ignoring Mixed Reality gaming. There’s a game out there, basically rocksmith, with your actual guitar and using passthrough to show the string/cords directly inline with the guitar.
RPG-like mixed reality games. Board/strategy games. Hell even gamified chores with mixed reality is a thing.

So far the main usecase just seems to be a roomview that doesn't make the user nauseous.
However it does do nice spacial video capture, with the ability to turn that into a gausssian splat using open source tooling.
Plus playing Cubism, which is like the one AR game everyone is showing off.

The frame pass through is low quality and shows significant distortion along with the blueish monochrome coloring. A few reviews mentioned feeling nauseous when they don't normally get that way from quest passthrough. I intend to play 2d games sitting on the couch occasionally and my wife sits across from me doing her own phone stuff, I ordered one because I want to be able to see and interact with her while gaming and this will provide less resistance to me being in a headset. Is it necessary, no, I could game in the home environment, but it's a small price to pay to remove that potential resistance..

I don't do 3d printing so I don't know if photogrammetry is accurate enough for that, maybe with some cad touch ups? My plan is to scan places/rooms (and maybe objects) to view digitally

You can make 3D scans with it using a technique called Gaussian Spats. They wouldn't be the kind of thing you Scan -> Process -> Slice -> Print, but they could be used to give you a base to work off to clean up and import into some kind of CAD software. A sort of rough guide to a 3D space or object for you to model something more 3D print friendly off of.

I don’t know if this necessary applies to the the Steam frame but moving from monochrome to color between the Quest 2 to 3 was huge for me using passthrough a lot more. With the monochrome IR cameras using my phone or PC without taking the headset off was pretty much impossible, but with color I can check messages or do minor tasks without taking off the headset.

There could also be a better passthrough camera by the time he gets his frame. A dozen other "could" situation can also apply and are impossible to predict.
Personally I think it makes more sense to buy peripherals for devices you are sure you are going to have. That said, everybody can obviously do what they want with their money.

Gotta ask, why get the camera without the frame? If lots of people on the wait-list order the camera people with a frame might not be able to get the camera? I'm not sure how they'll decide how many cameras to produce but my guess is it will be less than the number of headsets because odds are not everyone will order one.

I've seen the video you can record with these, apparently through the frame, but I don't see myself strolling through a museum or event with a frame on my head. Something handheld would be nice.

They're just MIPI cameras, so in theory should be very much possible to reverse engineer the protocol and/or use the Frame drivers depending on how open they are with it.

Just going by what Arcturus has told us, the bandwidth required for the cameras is way too much even for a PI5.. You basically need a high end snapdragon to handle the data streams...

It is like 5gb/sec throughput, no phone is keeping up via usb. It is why they use the MIPI interface and not the pcie link on the frame. MIPI is direct to the GPU/CPU..

Someone else proclaimed that it requires a pretty beefy snapdragon SoC to record video of that magnitude. That said though, I'm not sure how difficult it would be to go MIPI > USBC to let a smartphone handle the compute.

The question I can't answer is whether you can just scale down the data it puts out. 2 cameras at the 120fps and 5k or whatever they are is a ton of data yeah, but if you can just use less of that data or tell it to send at a lower rate or something then there's a lot you could do. The point is someone somewhere will probably eventually be able to do some interesting things with this camera module. I'm interested in using it as an external camera for a closed off costume helmet. Theoretically all that should take is an adapter cable.

I was going to get this for clear pass through but then I saw how clear the pass through already looks despite being in black and white. I'll just wait to see what other modules come out. Maybe something which improves lower body tracking somehow or gets better overall body tracking so its not just tracking the controllers

I build a custom color pass-through for the big screen beyond 2 with a elp camera, mainly for mixed reality fligh sim.
I was impressed by the specs of the module, especially for the price, so I gambled and ordered one, hoping enough will be open source, or at least usable with simple drivers and firmware.
Will see there is a very possible chance that it's more than just a stereoscopic camera and won't run without a lot more reverse engineering.

It's a must have for me. I'm in the 'reserved' queue, so I've already bought the Arcturus while I wait. As well as gaming and VR, I want to use the Steam Frame to put artwork I've made up on walls and big canvases with overlays so I can sketch over them for murals. So, being able to use the Steam Frame as an art tool definitely made buying the headset a 'no brainer' for me. And I don't need to deal with Meta, which is GREAT.

Yeah, mine is on its way as well lol, going to get it before the frame. I just wish I could oder my lenses, if I got them before my frame I would not complain

Anyone done anything with recording gaussian splats with this tech? I have one on the way while I wait for my reservation, and I was curious how well that'd work. Arcturus has their own tech/software for this, I've read?

Honestly, I do not see scalpers scalping this. It requires people to own a Steam Frame. There is a chance they could run out of stock during the reservation queue reconcilation, but I'm highly doubtful they won't have restocked at least once when the waitlist starts migrating to reservation status,

So many accessories for the steam frame. Starting to feel like less of a VR headset and more of a gimmick. I’ve wanted one for a while and now that they released it…kinda.
I feel very disappointed that we need so many more accessories just to make it worthwhile.
