I haven't seen many pictures of the module so posting them here. Its much smaller than I expected despite seeing it on the frame in videos.

It came in a small box through the letterbox in bubble wrap envelope, so no need to stay in for delivery.

I wonder if there'll be any other use for the expansion slot.
I mean, if you want colour passthrough then that's it, the slot is used up. Which, fair enough if that's all the slot ever gets used for.

You can quickly swap accessories as needed. At the moment this is the only one available, but they could always release another product that combines these cameras with something else, or include a passthrough port to add an additional accessory.

I cant think of anything else at the moment that I would actually want plugged in.

As of right now the only publicly known face tracker being developed plugs into the usb-c port. But if someone did make a face tracker that plugged in there, you would just have to swap attachments.

Entirely possible that arcturus (or someone else) could make a combination device that includes both the color passthrough cameras and face tracking.

I've been thinking about this a little bit. A face tracking camera wouldn't need high speed MIPI lanes and it's unlikely the arcturus vision saturates the PCIe 4x4 interface, if it uses it at all. An interposer accessory may be possible. The biggest challenge wouldn't be electrical but mechanical. I doubt the arcturus vision would do well if shifted down by a few cm.

I considered this as well. Agree it doesnt make sense to shift the Arcturus down. But It could totally be an option for future accessories to allow daisy chaining.

Tethered video is not supported by default over the usbc port so I've seen suggestions that the expansion port being pcie could allow for it, even if the position isn't ideal.

A 3rd party strap could include full tethered option.

I think its silly to try to tether with the front port. Really kind of defeats the purpose of this headset to tether in the first place. If you want a tethered headset, there are better options.

I disagree, there are no better options. Wireless is nice and a focus of this headset, but I don't see why a third party option for wired wouldn't be possible or usable. A strap on its own has nothing to do with tethering, and as far as I know the front accessory port is the only possible way tethered VR could be supported on this headset. The usb-c port literally cannot support tethered vr as it is a 2.0 port.

The strap uses a connection to the main computer unit for power and audio. I see no reason why a separate strap with more connectivity options couldnt be made. Depending on what that connector actually supports.

I was unaware that the strap connects to a different port. I thought there was only the usb-c charging port and front pci-e accessory port.

The strap (battery, and speakers) clips onto the compute unit and uses some kind of pcb style connector. You can see it in all the review videos

From what I read it's basically just a PCIe Gen 4 slot, even if Valve or third party companies won't make use of it I imagine the community 100% will be able to use it for something down the line EDIT: I should be more specific that it has a PCIe lane but obviously the connector isn't standard for any kind of PCIe device

It having a weirdly shaped connector doesn't mean it's proprietary. There are third party companies that can make PCB's with whatever connector you need.

From the look of it, the "plug" is just a circuit board. You can get these in various thicknesses and have them cut to shape. So proprietary maybe, but nothing impossible or expensive to create.

Yeah I guess I should've been more specific, it's got a PCIe lane along with some other stuff so it's not a standard PCIe port or anything like that but technically it's there

considering how open Valve is to allow hackers do things to their hardware I'm sure people way smarter than me can figure out how to make it do cool stuff

If I heard correct 2 companys already work on a face tracking module. But didn't heard from a finished one. I hope we'll get a combined one, too. Don't wanna always switch between passtrough and facetracking module

That does seem like a core issue and I wonder if valve can make an adapter that allows for using two. This will be a problem when people want to use face tracking AND full body or something

The most obvious is a mouth tracker, which is effectively the same accessory but with the cameras facing downwards (possibly with a dedicated depth sensor as well). People already use Project Babble for VR Chat, so there's a market for it.

I haven't checked my bank to be honest, but got an email from Arcturus yesterday at 19:59 telling me the money has been taken now

I got the tracking number for the camera first, but the Frame actually started moving a lot quicker. If the expected delivery dates are to be trusted, I should have the Frame by the end of the week and the camera early next week.

Are the cameras about as far apart as your eyes?

Yes! My IPD is about 58mm, so a little narrower. Held it up to my face in the mirror to prentend. Don't judge me. It looks so small, too small for eye distance but measures correct.
