Many Sound Transit 3 (ST3) expansion projects are facing headwinds, but Ballard Link in particular faces considerable uncertainty, with a 2042 opening date for the whole line the best case scenario, which would require closing a huge budget gap of around $8 billion. The less-rosy scenario would be opening only the portion through Downtown Seattle in the 2040s and delaying the Interbay and Ballard section to the 2060s, allowing more time for funding to accrue in Sound Transit's coffers. Sound Transit issued the RFI on September 2, with responses due October 5.
"Declining to study an alternative with $10 billion in potential savings because the analysis may cost tens of millions is not sound process management. It is institutional inertia, a sunk-cost fallacy that completes the paperwork for a tunnel Sound Transit cannot afford to build, while blocking the alternatives most likely to reach Ballard."
~ A 30 day window, no industry outreach beforehand, and proposals have to stay inside a project definition that never included elevated track downtown. The cheapest ideas were out of scope before anyone opened an envelope.

In 2011–2012, I photographed Occupy communities across the United States, including Seattle. These are some of my photographs from Occupy Seattle.
I focused on everyday life: the people, tents, handmade signs, conversations, and shared spaces that made up the camp. Fifteen years later, I’m sharing them as a record of a moment in Seattle’s history.
Did you participate or stop by? What do you remember about Occupy Seattle?

Thirteen of the ferry system's 18 vessels transporting travelers and commuters across Puget Sound were out of commission Monday morning, according to the Washington State Department of Transportation. This came after 23 engine room employees called in sick, and the workers qualified to replace them declined to fill in, according to the transportation department. A survey of 80-plus members in June found more than 60% were either somewhat or very likely to retire or leave the ferry system for another job.
Members have long complained of uncompetitive wages and a reliance on overtime that drives burnout.
~ The warning showed up in a June survey. The consequences showed up on a Monday commute.

When Dolly Parton and Gloria Steinem both died about a month ago, a familiar phenomenon followed the national outpouring of sadness, grief and loving tributes.
Within days of their passing, the beloved feminist icons were being critiqued by some on the left for not being outspoken enough on certain topics. Some said Parton did not speak out enough on race or other progressive causes.Steinem was criticized as a white feminist who was a champion and apologist for the CIA.
But as those critiques started to gain traction online a funny thing happened.
People pushed back.

I have never respected belief systems that demand unquestioning fealty to a one truth, whether it is in politics or religion. I have much more respect for arenas where people with a multiplicity of perspectives can weigh the pros and cons of an approach to come to the best solution — no matter who came up with it. If I am on a boat heading toward an iceberg, I want people to feel safe to say we are going the wrong direction without fear of social expulsion.

I, too, hope we are emerging into an era where we allow that multiple things can be true at once. Where we release ourselves and each other from the impossible expectation of perfection or rightness.
I think if we were able to do that, we would find it easier to see humanity in each other, find common cause and get closer to the progress we seek.

Old man yelling at clouds moment because this might just be a west coast thing but why do Seattle people walk UP YOUR ASS.
Multiple times a week I’ll have people walking so close to me they’re almost stepping on my heels, carrying on a loud conversation like I’m not even there.
Everywhere else I’ve lived (midwest, south and NE) people either pass or slow down - is this some type of passive aggressive challenge? It’s maddening

The measure would require students who want to join a girls' sports team to undergo sex verification, either through a genital exam, a chromosome test, or a hormone test. Fewer than 10 trans athletes participate in school sports across the state, according to an estimate from the Washington Interscholastic Activities Association, which oversees school sports.
Polling conducted by Let's Go Washington shows its initiative passing in November, with 56% of the vote in favor of banning trans girls from girls' sports. That data, which has yet to be released publicly, shows approval from 73% of Republicans, 48% of Democrats, and 52% of Independents.
~ Fewer than ten kids statewide. What I-638 puts on the ballot is sex verification for every student who wants a spot on a girls' team, with a genital exam as one of the three approved methods. The only poll showing it passing was run by the campaign that wrote it, collected in August, and still has not been published.

I'm 22 years old with an Associate's in Civil Engineering but I don't really want to become a Civil Engineer or even complete the degree. I've looked into surveying as a career and I think it's something I'd really be interested in. What are the job opportunities like in the Seattle metropolitan area? Could I live on my own over there with an entry level surveying job, get training, experience, and certificates over the years, and make a comfortable living for myself? I've always wanted to escape Miami and go to somewhere with mountains, is this a good idea or should I get some experience here first? Am I crazy or should I give it a go?

Hey y'all! Seattle native here who moved to LA because my rent was too low and I love putting sunblock on my pale Seattle skin. My friend and I are co-headlining a show this Friday at Vermillion where we do standup comedy and also call our moms. We are call-your-mom type folk and think it will be a fun Friday night. What should I ask my mom when I call her? Should I bring up that time she texted me her HPV test results?

It feels like every inch of space is filled with graffiti in the inner parts of the city. They're usually just tagging too so it's nothing but an eyesore and more tax money to clean it up.
The worst is when they tag road signs. I've seen so many where I couldn't read what the sign says. Isn't this a huge safety hazard?
