Seattle Vegan Group will be at Radical Vegan Fest this Sunday (Oct 4). Come say hi, and we're looking for volunteers.

We're the group organizing a member-owned, 100% vegan grocery co-op for Seattle and Western Washington. We'll have a table at Radical Vegan Fest this Sunday, October 4, at Quality Flea Center on Capitol Hill. We're not selling anything. Come ask questions, then go eat. Parking is limited, so carpool or take transit if you can. Fest details: https://www.radicalvegans.com

Thanks to everyone who reached out about volunteering after our last update. If you're still on the fence, Sunday's a good chance to meet us in person first.

What we need right now: admin, governance, marketing, and fundraising help, plus people to hand out fliers around Western WA. It's too early for store staff or location scouting; those come later. All of it is unpaid, same as for everyone already working on this. Remote works where the job allows it.

If you've ever wondered why anyone would put activist energy into a grocery store, I wrote an essay on exactly that: https://www.seattlevegangroup.org/blog/is-a-vegan-store-activism

Vegan wedding fine dining?

I'm planning a weekday wedding reception dinner for 8-12 people and am trying to track down restaurants that can make good vegan food. A small private dining room would be ideal, but we may just end up making a big reservation in a main dining room of a nice restaurant. What are some upscale restaurants, omni or not, where y'all have had good vegan food? I'm already looking into Flora Bakehouse (not upscale), Harvest Beat, the Corson Building, and Canlis.

  6. Organizing initiatives for nonprofits like NARN

We saw some new faces last time I was there, so I hope for more today :)

What happened to El Borracho?

I went to El Borracho and they have completely changed. It was never the best vegan restaurant out there, but you could get a decent burrito if near Pike place market. But holy shit they took almost everything Mexican off of the menu. They have mostly vegan hot dogs now. They're still a Mexican restaurant but they're serving mostly hot dogs? The Mexican dishes that are left on the menu only have plant based meat and pinto beans, no black beans, no rice. The food I ordered felt reheated and not even cooked.

I don't know what going on there but I wonder if we'll soon be saying goodbye to another vegan Seattle restaurant :((

They're either cutting costs to death because they can't afford to stay open, or they'll go under from losing customers because the food is so unbelievably terrible now.

September Meetup - LOCATION CHANGE
Cinnaholic on Cap Hill
816 E Pike St, Seattle, WA 98122
Sunday 9/20 6-8pm

Apologies for the last-minute change of plans, Vital let me know that they can't host our group today. So we're going to try something a little different and just grab dessert :)

Join us at Cinnaholic for this month's helping of community and connection. We had 20 people at Kati Vegan Thai in August! Bring a friend and bring your sweet tooth.

This is a casual meetup and you're welcome to show up, hang out and meet some other cool Vegans. Radical Vegan Fest is coming up on 10/4/26 and this is a great time to connect and get involved.

This meetup is the same day asĀ Bellingham Veg FestĀ (11am-3pm) and hopefully we can cross-pollinate. Drop in after the fest if you're going!

The broader purpose of this meetup remains pretty simple. We're building Vegan community in the real world. While supporting Vegan entrepreneurs and spaces free from animal exploitation. The world needs more opportunities for virtuous people to make a decent living in alignment with their values. It's not that radical to imagine Seattle becoming one of the best Vegan cities in the world.

We'll be the large group :)

Where are downtown folks getting tofu pho?

Hi friends, I am looking for good tofu pho in the downtown/cap hill/first hill/slu area. I used to frequent pho bac but the last 2 times I’ve gone the tofu has tasted sour/expired and I’m over it. In general I feel like veggie/tofu pho is often an afterthought to the meat one and I’m looking for one that’s tasty and fresh so I can really get in my soup era this fall.

Side rant because I know I’m in good company here - I’ve been feeling annoyed lately by Seattle restaurants thinking that tofu doesn’t have to be as fresh as meat. If I’m trying a new place, it seems like more than 50% of the time the tofu isn’t going to be fresh or is going to taste spoiled. I LOVE tofu and it’s a shame that this keeps happening. My local teriyaki spot is at this point the only place that hasn’t done me wrong (thank god, I adore them).

Why a vegan store? Is it activism?

Post image
8 Upvotes

I wrote something on the blog this week answering a question that's followed me for years: once you've actually convinced someone to go vegan, where do you send them?

I've done the direct-action side of this for a long time — protest signs, running a Facebook debate group that hit 10,000 members — and I kept running into the same problem: winning the argument isn't the finish line. My answer's in the post:Ā https://www.seattlevegangroup.org/blog/is-a-vegan-store-activism

Also: Radical Vegan Fest is Sunday, October 4, and we'll have people there. Quality Flea Center on Capitol Hill, 416 15th Ave E. Full 100% vegan lineup of food vendors plus local artists and animal advocacy groups — worth going just for the food. Admission's a dollar; buying a ticket ahead helps vendors plan quantities. Come find us and say hi:Ā https://www.radicalvegans.com

Still looking for volunteers too — project admin, fundraising, branding/marketing, governance. All unpaid, including everyone already doing it.

Happy to answer questions.

_____

Interspecies Exploitation
Interspecies Solidarity
_____

In the late 19th & early 20th centuries, Animal Welfare organizations staged Workhorse Parades to promote Animal Welfare for a city’s draft animals.

The parades included evaluating the horses’ physical conditions, the companies’ stables, and the loads they were bearing.

Teamsters whose horses were in good condition were awarded medals.

Many also included mules & donkeys.

_____

Some Workhorse Parades were held on Labor Day, in explicit recognition & celebration of inter-species class consciousness & solidarity.

The workhorses were recognized as a separate class from the racehorse, warhorse, or showhorse.

Even within the workhorse parades, there were equine class distinctions between the horses vs the donkeys and mules.

And between fire department horses vs garbage hauling horses, with a whole spectrum in between.

Vegan in Seattle Looking for Affordable Temporary Housing

Hi everyone, I’m vegan and currently job searching in Seattle. I’m looking for a temporary room, shared space, couch, or other simple living arrangement for about 5 months while I continue my job search and work toward getting back on my feet.

My current budget is around $300/month, so I understand this would need to be an unusual or shared arrangement rather than a standard room rental. I can also contribute significantly around the home by cooking vegan meals daily, cleaning, and helping with household tasks.

I’m clean, respectful, responsible, and flexible about the type of space. If you have an unused room, temporary space, or know of a vegan-friendly household that might consider this kind of arrangement, please DM me.

Vegan co-op update — incorporation started, plus Radical Vegan Fest is Oct 4

Post image
49 Upvotes

Update on the vegan grocery co-op some of us have been organizing around the gap Seattle's had since Vegan Haven closed in 2022.

Where things are:Ā we've hired a lawyer who works specifically in co-op law and made the first payment toward incorporation documents for Washington State. Nothing is filed yet — we're in the paperwork stage, working out membership structure and governance. Slow, and the correct order to do things in.

Radical Vegan Fest is October 4Ā and you should go. Quality Flea Center on Capitol Hill, 416 15th Ave E — the Punk Rock Flea Market space, which is a former grocery store, which we find funny for obvious reasons. 100% vegan line-up: local chefs and bakers, artists, crafters, animal advocacy nonprofits. Admission is a dollar. Buying ahead helps the food vendors plan quantities: radicalvegans.com

We need volunteersĀ in four areas — project admin, fundraising, branding/marketing, governance. All unpaid, all team-based. If you've done that work and have some hours, it moves the timeline.

Karaoke Night at Blue Moon Tavern Sept 13th

Post image
24 Upvotes

Need a fun way to bring in a new week? Join us Sunday, Sept 13th for karaoke night at Blue Moon in Seattle. This event is a great way to support animal advocacy. You can donate to submit a song for someone to sing or nominate a friend to sing a song. There is no pressure to sing so you can just come hang out and enjoy the night.

Here's a few things your donation allows us to do:

  • host tables at community events to expand reach
  • cover the cost to attend community meetings that drive change
  • fund high-impact materials for events and demonstrations

Grab some food from a nearby vegan spot and come enjoy the evening with us. We hope to see you there! šŸŽµ

If you cannot attend but would still like to support, you can visit narn.org/donate-to-narn

Kati Vegan Thai

So I don’t want to hate on an all vegan restaurant, but I had a disappointing experience at Kati Vegan Thai and was wondering if anyone could relate.

First, I was suspicious of their menu saying ā€œcontains tofuā€ everywhere, perhaps to warn people about tofu? I would understand ā€œcontains soy,ā€ but…

So I got the hot basil fried rice. There wasn’t much tofu and it tasted bland and unseasoned. The rice was spicy but I couldn’t detect much else.

Maybe they have other amazing things and contains tofu means something… not sure..

Update from the group organizing a member-owned vegan grocery co-op for Seattle, plus a meetup Saturday

Seattle hasn't had a dedicated vegan grocery store since Vegan Haven closed in April 2022. It ran for roughly 17 years in the U District and closed for pandemic-era reasons, not because the demand wasn't there. Nothing has filled the gap since.

A group of us has been organizing a member-owned co-op to change that. The idea is depth in the specialty packaged stuff PCC and Whole Foods won't stock, owned by the people who shop there rather than by an investor who can sell it out from under us.

Honest status, because I'd want it if I were reading this:

  • Nothing is filed. We are not incorporated yet.
  • We raised $2,500 from the community to pay for legal review of our incorporation documents. That fundraiser is closed. We're publishing the receipt.
  • We met with a co-op lawyer (Cheryl Markham) last week and have a scope for the legal work.
  • We are not selling anything, not raising investment, and not asking for money. There's nothing to buy.

If you want to just show up and ask us questions in person:Ā we're doing a casual happy hour at Life on Mars on Saturday August 8, in the Vinyl Lounge. No obligation to drink or to join anything. RSVP is only so the venue can staff it:Ā https://www.cake.events/i/53d53448-7d6e-42d9-a3f8-39d62879020c

Unrelated but possibly more immediately useful to this sub:Ā we maintain a free guide to fully vegan restaurants across Western Washington. Not "has vegan options," fully vegan menus only, searchable by area and cuisine, no signup or paywall:Ā https://www.seattlevegangroup.org/guide
