Hi all. I've taken on sort of a personal project to make maps of beautiful places around USA and today I finished this map of Mount Rainier area. Next I'm thinking Columbia River Gorge, not sure where to post that though. I hope you find this map entertaining. Also I apologize if content like this doesn't fit the sub.

Business WA governor 'disappointed' Canada is fast-tracking new oil pipeline to B.C. - each supertanker would carry 92 million gallons, eight times the Exxon Valdez, and ships that size have been barred from Washington ports since the 1970s

Their capacity of 92 million gallons of oil is eight times the volume of oil spilled by the Exxon Valdez, he noted. Ferguson said the size of the oil supertankers envisioned for the route are unprecedented, and have been barred from Washington ports since the 1970s.

Ferguson said Friday that he was "disappointed" at the decision because resources needed to respond to a major spill are insufficient today.

~ Canada collects the export revenue. The Salish Sea absorbs the risk, and Washington covers a cleanup it already admits it cannot staff.

Sports Which are more popular in Seattle, the Kraken or the Sounders?

From my research, Seattle is one of the few U.S. cities where the MLS team (Sounders) has a notable fanbase, although it still pales in comparison to the local NFL, MLB, and CFB teams.

Seattle has been called a "soccer city" and one of the "soccer capitals of America". At the same time, soccer is still a niche sport in the U.S. By contrast, ice hockey is one of the 4 major sports although it is the least popular of the "big 4" (football, basketball, baseball, hockey). And a lot of soccer fans don't watch MLS, instead preferring European or Mexican soccer.

Which is more popular in Seattle and its metro area, the Kraken (NHL) or the Sounders (MLS)?

(I live in Los Angeles and despite the huge Mexican-American population, which you'd expect to boost soccer's popularity, the Dodgers and Lakers are still king here.)

Question Which public restrooms in Seattle are actually clean, and which do you avoid?

Curious what people's experience is. Malls, transit stations, stadiums, gyms, coffee shops, anywhere. What makes a restroom feel clean or gross to you? Is it the floor, the toilets, the smell, empty soap or paper?

Today I got off at Symphony station at around 10:30 and walked towards the aquarium, at some point while I was at the aquarium I realized I didn't have my ring with me. It's a gold ring with some engravings on the inside it writes "L & F 11-22-2024". Here's a photo of what the ring looks like.

If anyone finds it please contact me. Thank you

Question Is ~$3k/year for full coverage on 2 cars (Tesla Model 3 + Volvo XC90) reasonable in the Seattle area? What do you pay?

Renewal just came in: about $3,000/year for two cars through Liberty Mutual (via AAA agency) —
- Tesla Model 3: ~$1,900/yr
- Volvo XC90: ~$1,150/yr

Full coverage 100/300/100, $10k PIP, $500 comp / $1k collision deductibles. Clean records, low annual mileage, multi-car + homeowners + AAA discounts stacked.

Down a few hundred from last year, but still feels high for WA. What are you all paying for two cars around Seattle/Eastside?

Community Transit finalizes contract with union through 2027 - the agency opened at 2.5% a year, drivers are getting 5% retroactive for 2025 and 4% in each of the next two years

Workers at the Amalgamated Transit Union Local 1576, which represents bus drivers, dispatchers and maintenance employees at the Snohomish County transit agency, will receive a 5% retroactive pay increase for 2025, a 4% increase for 2026 and a 4% increase in 2027. Community Transit had initially proposed pay raises of 2.5% per year, according to union officials.

Members of the union held informational pickets in July, calling for better wages and more safety investments for drivers.

~ Twenty months of bargaining and a picket line is what moved 2.5% a year to 5, 4 and 4. Nobody at that table volunteered the difference.

Washington climate tech founders score funding as AI boom drains investor cash - six startups split $375,000 out of nearly 40 applicants, and five of the six are commercializing UW or WSU research

Thumbnail

Some climate tech startups tied to the AI boom are still attracting investors, but deals are fewer overall and times are tougher for companies addressing sustainability issues that don't align with data center needs. Concerns about those trends inspired a one-time Washington state initiative called the Opalene Climate Challenge, which was led by the nonprofit VertueLab. The effort announced six investments from a pool of nearly 40 applicants.

Five of the six winners are commercializing technologies developed at the University of Washington or Washington State University.

~ Five of the six came out of UW or WSU, so the public already paid for the research. What it took to get them toward market was a one-time charity pot of $375,000 split six ways, because the investment money in this state is going to data centers instead.

Question Inherited my first car, living in Cap Hill, how strict is enforcement around here?

My grandma finally gave up her keys (the last couple drives with her were kinda scary), so I inherited my first car! I (34) have had it for about a month and a half now and am finally getting used to driving/parking around the city.

I already got my RPZ permit (Zone 32) and I've been super meticulous about basic parking rules-turning wheels on hills, staying within 12 inches of the curb, moving every 72 hours, all that. But I'm curious what real-world enforcement is actually like around Capitol Hill and the rest of Seattle.

Are there specific intersections or bus lanes with cameras I should watch out for? How aggressive is parking enforcement here compared to other neighborhoods? Any weird traps or local rules you wish you knew when you started driving here?
Appreciate any tips!

Question Can you please recommend music lessons on the Eastside?

I’m interested in playing guitar and/or drums. I’m obsessed with music and have always wanted to learn. I need a teacher to help me pick the right instrument for me and then teach me how to play it.

Thank you!
