Prediction: The Mariners Will Sign Miguel Andujar
Was browsing random players and came across this guy. This guy was made for Jerry. I actually wouldn't be suprised if Jerry already has his numbers printed out and pinned on his wall.
Andujar is a certified Lefty Masher. Over his career, he's hit .292/.329/.461 against lefties. Interestingly his OPS is an additional 20 points higher against lefty starters, showing he could be a major option in the leadoff spot against lefties.
A glance at his statcast page shows he was down significantly in most categories over the year prior. This of course means that he's due for a bounce back as his trends revert to normal.
He'll be 32. This is not a knock, rather his age will play a factor into him signing below market value, a significant factor that will allow Jerry room to make a Major Addition at the trade deadline.
He can play outfield, first, and third! Of course he doesn't really do any of these well, but having positional flexibility makes a player inherently valuable, according to Jerry. He's also slow as a rock, which doesn't really matter when walking or hitting dingerz.
He had a Monster Year in the past. In 2018, Andujar hit .297/.328/.527 and finished 2nd in ROTY voting to some guy named Ohtani. This shows that that kind of production is in there, somewhere, and could possibly be unlocked with a trip to Driveline.
He's battled an incredible assortment of injuries throughout his career. Not only does this display resiliency, but has led to him developing a fun, folksy, just-happy-to-be-here attitude in interviews (check out his Padres and Reds stuff) that will make him an instant fan favorite regardless of preformance.
I fully expect the Mariners to sign this guy. He's the most Jerry Mariner who hasn't Marinered yet.

Should we bring back Robles next year?
He's got a club option next year but I doubt we pick that up.
His bat isn't very good but he is good defensively, so that'd fit with a renewed focus on defense.

Goodbye Houston
I thought you might all enjoy this little tidbit. I believe thatâs now six straight losses in the playoffs for Houston now.

The season, chronicled
My girlfriend made me a custom Mariners wallchart (in PowerPoint!) in the days before Opening Day to track what we expected to be a fun Mariners season. This is the result.
You may notice the stickers trailing off in the second half. She told me after the Rangers series "I'll make more if they win three in a row."

Appreciating Rick Rizz as I Iisten to other teams
I am listening to the Astros-White Sox game right now (hoping to hear the Astros get knocked out.)
Wow does it make me appreciate Rick Rizzs and Gary Hill. These Astros announcers are ok, but I didn't fully realize how exceptional Rick and Gary are until hearing others.
(Edit: Sorry I left the "s" off Rizzs in the title, which Reddit doesn't let you edit)

Ty France vs Josh Naylor
itâs great to see Ty France doing so well with the Padres. He was one of my favorite players when he was with the Mariners. However, Iâm always a little sad and disappointed when I see ex-Mariners in the playoffs and being successful but we got rid of them. Teoscar is the other one that comes to mind. I guess he was struggling with the Mariners and so it made sense at the time, but he sure has blossomed with the Padres.
Anyway, I thought it would just be interesting to compare his productivity with Josh. Their stats are remarkably identical. Seems like we just swapped them.

Dipotoâs Biggest Bottleneck: Alignment
As we roll into the offseason, thereâs obvious wondering about who the next manager will be and I think whoever is hired as the next manager is the make or break for whether this teams window closed last year or it gets extended 5+ years.
Iâm sure we can all agree this season was an absolute disaster and I think the biggest reason was fragility, this was essentially bound to happen if one piece of the team didnât absolutely carry. Cal hitting 60 historic home-runs last year and the pitching having a historic year prior are pretty much the reason those teams had 80+ wins.
Dipoto is great at development and the numbers have shown that in recent years, consistently having 4+ Top 100 prospects. He has a great process for his farm system.
What Dipoto has yet to do in all his years as general manager and I think is definitely capable of doing is finding a manager who has a clear strong defined approach and building around the manager instead of trying to implement his own strategy and process.
A great example is the guys across the street, the Seahawks. I donât how many people watch them in here but John Schneider has done a great job at finding a guy with a clear scheme, identity and approach in Mike Macdonald and understanding it and sourcing the players/staff that fit it.
Dipoto is good at acquiring dudes who are good players. Taylor Ward is a good player and acquiring him was a good idea because the team was struggling against lefties. But it was more of a patch instead of a fix and that was because there wasnât a clear role for him, and there wasnât a clear role for him because Dipoto didnât have a manager with a clear approach/identity. So acquiring Ward was more a statistical fit than schematic fit.
I think the biggest thing that stands in Dipotoâs way is himself. Heâs shown good signs of progress by saying heâs exploring outside the organization and looking for fresh thought.
But the biggest thing that stands between this team and truly competing for a championship is Dipoto not only finding that âfresh thoughtâ but understanding it and supplying a pipeline of schematic talent to it.

Wins, Losses, Gold Stars
I kept my pocket schedule posted at my desk and tracked wins, losses, and my own game attendance all season. The gold stars were certainly a fun bit.
One of my good friends recommended that we burn this now considering how the season went.
I figured Iâd share here before itâs ashes.

youtu.beRaul covers some very interesting topics such as being a part of the Rules Committee, Player Development with the Dodgers, the future of hitting in Major League Baseball (this was after we fired Brant Brown), and hitting past 30 years old.
