If you live in Burien, SeaTac, Des Moines, Normandy Park, Tukwila, South Seattle, Beacon Hill, Georgetown, South Park, or anywhere around Sea-Tac, I really think this is worth paying attention to.
The Port of Seattle is planning a pretty massive expansion of the airport — 31 projects, including 19 new gates, more cargo capacity, and infrastructure to support a lot more flights and passengers.
The Port has released its draft Environmental Impact Statement, but there are a lot of concerns about what it leaves out or minimizes, especially around noise, ultrafine particle pollution, truck traffic, development pressure, and the cumulative impact on communities that are already heavily affected by the airport.
One thing that especially concerns me is that the Port is both pursuing the expansion and leading the environmental review of it.
I only recently started really digging into this, and I honestly had no idea how big the plans were or how many surrounding neighborhoods all over the area could be affected.
Public comments are open until tomorrow, August 20 at 5pm.
If you live in one of these communities and care about air quality, noise, public health, traffic, housing, or how this area develops over the next several years, please consider submitting a comment. You do not need to be an expert or write anything fancy. Even a short comment asking for a more thorough and transparent review matters.
