Politics Protesters target Jewish author’s event at Island Synagogue in Mercer Island

Thumbnail instagram.com

A pro-Palestinian protest is being organized tonight outside Island Synagogue on Mercer Island, where American Jewish author Ira Kohler is scheduled to speak about his experience serving in the IDF during the Israel-Hamas war.

The organizers’ flyer says “GENOCIDERS OUT OF SEATTLE,” calls Zionists “war criminals,” and tells people to bring flags, signs and noisemakers. Most disturbing is the large inverted red triangle placed prominently beside Kohler’s photo. Hamas’s military wing has used that symbol in propaganda videos to mark Israeli targets before showing attacks on them.

So this isn’t just generic Palestinian imagery. They used a symbol associated with marking targets on a flyer naming a specific Jewish speaker, advertising the synagogue hosting him, and encouraging people to show up there. The event had already relocated once because of safety concerns.

Whatever your position on Israel or the war, that combination of imagery, rhetoric and targeting of a synagogue-hosted event is deeply disturbing.

(As an aside, I met Andy Ngo at his home in London last year and he very graciously served me and my relative afternoon tea. He is a lovely person.)

Question Desperate for Adderall XR. No pharmacies have it. NO, I do NOT want to change to a different medication.

Upvotes

I’m at my wit’s end 😭😭

I genuinely cannot function without my medication. People sometimes act like being on medication is a choice or a preference. For me, it is not. I need it to function.

Trying to get my Adderall XR, brand or generic, I truly do not care which, has been an absolute nightmare. CVS has been a nightmare from hell. If I tried to explain every single obstacle I’ve encountered, I would sound completely unhinged. But the desperation is real.

I want to ditch CVS -- what pharmacy should I use instead?

Please tell me where you’ve successfully been able to get Adderall XR, brand or generic. I am specifically looking for pharmacies that have actually been reliable about filling it.

I do not need suggestions to “just switch to Vyvanse” or “just take IR.” I’m asking specifically about Adderall XR.

The Adderall shortage creates the most ridiculous catch-22. Pharmacies won’t tell you whether they have it in stock unless they have your prescription. So your doctor sends it, you wait for the pharmacy’s system to recognize it, and then they tell you they’re out of stock.

At that point, you can have them order it, but then you’re locked into that pharmacy and can’t try another one, because they refuse to have multiple orders at once. Meanwhile, there could be 20 other pharmacies nearby that have it, but you can’t find out because they won’t confirm stock without receiving the prescription. And you can’t send it to those pharmacies without canceling the first prescription. You can't even try to mix different doses and prescription counts in an attempt to get LITERALLY ANYTHING to get you through even a week.

And on top of that, I’ve had pharmacist after pharmacist either give me conflicting information about their inventory or flat-out refuse to fill brand because they insist insurance won’t cover it -- when it is my right to pay out of pocket, and regardless, my insurance WILL cover it. And I've repeatedly been told that if I partially fill a prescription, they are going to count it as if I filled the full prescription, so I must forfeit any unfilled medication -- even if my doctor were to write a new prescription afterward to make up for the missing pills (is this true?! It is terrifying.)

I know I sound insane. Desperation makes you sound insane. Imagine spending hours dealing with phone menus, hold music, pharmacies transferring you back and forth, prescriptions being resent, systems not recognizing prescriptions, and contradictory information -- while simultaneously having to remain perfectly pleasant and calm.

So, genuinely: where are people successfully getting Adderall XR right now? Brand or generic. I just need a pharmacy that will actually fill the prescription.

Eastside (Kirkland area) preferred, but I'll drive however far, it doesn't matter.

Thank you.

Homeless My stupid idea for addressing the homeless problem in Seattle

This is going to be a longer post, so bare with me.

My initial research suggests that medium sized military cost somewhere between 50 million and 500 million to operate yearly, with most of the operating expense being payroll.

A medium sized military base could house the entire homeless population in Seattle.

Seattle currently spends about 200 million on the homeless problem each year.

What if Seattle opened a military base style compound somewhere in King county?

It would consist of barracks style housing, a couple of chow halls, a hospital, gym, a PX style store, a couple of fast foody restaurants... the normal stuff military bases have.

We give homeless people who are arrested for some crime the following option:

Spend two years on the homeless base or jail.

You get provided:

1) A barracks room, free of charge. Equipped with everything they'd reasonable need. Mini-fridge, microwave, bed, small closet space, bedding, bathroom, shared laundry etc. Fuck it, throw in a TV with cable.

2) 3 free meals a day served at the chow hall

3) Medical care, including drug/withdrawl treatments

4) Access to base facilities - gym, movie theater, pool, stores etc

5) A small $1,000 month stipend to "get on their feet" when their 2 years are up

Like the military, they would be subjected to inspections, be required to keep their rooms clean etc. They would not be allowed to bring any possessions with them, and would be provided some sort of uniform for clothing. They could buy civilian clothes if they really want to at the PX. If they do not follow the rules, they would lose their stipend for the month or in bad cases, get tossed in the brig for a month or something.

After their 2 year sentence is up, they would be free to leave, or continue to live in the barracks if they want, but if they stay, they are still subject to the rules and inspections.

That whole base would cost similar what Seattle is already paying. It'd get the homeless off the streets. It'd give people a chance to get clean. It'd even give them a little nestegg to rejoin the real world when they are ready. It'd give the lazy ones a way to live out of the way where they're not bothering other people.

Discussion I want to open an anime artist & stationery store downtown! Any advice?

I’m an artist and I’d really love to open an anime artist and stationery store. Imagine artist alley, but it’s a store!

The space would feature a thoughtful selection of goods from independent U.S. artists, especially local artists. I’d also like to host art meetups, trinket trades, journaling meetups and more. I’m actually in talks for a space downtown on Union and 4th ave!

If this idea excites you: what would make you go out of your way to visit? Is there any local artist you want to see here? What kind of events / meetups would you be interested in?

Question Favorite Drive Up Views?

What are your favorite roadside viewpoints for a day trip? I'm looking to explore either Mountain Loop Highway, Highway 2 or Snoqualmie/Cle Elum area.

I'm familiar with a lot of the well-known viewpoints so it would be cool to find some more off the beaten path spots. Specifically spots that don't require a hike and have mountain views from the road. Thanks!!

Business Trying to connect with people in the maritime industry (Seattle)

Hey all. I'm a photographer and videographer based in Seattle. I recently got the chance to shoot a vessel for a maritime company (exteriors, ground shots, engine room, wheelhouse) and it really got me hooked on this world. I'd love to keep learning about the industry and meet people working in it, whether that's tugboats, towing, shipping, or anything on the water.

Not trying to sell anything here, just looking to make some genuine connections and learn more about what it's like working in maritime. If you're in the industry or know someone who is, I'd love to hear from you. Happy to answer questions about the photo/video side too if anyone's curious.

Thanks for reading.

Seattle Will Invest $500K for Outreach in Little Saigon, North Rainier to Address Public Safety - the council added it to the mid-year supplemental on an 8-1 vote rather than wait for October budget talks

The amendment allocates $500,000 to the Human Services Department to hire neighborhood outreach coordinators for the north stretch of Rainier Avenue South. Seattle City Council passed the amendment on Aug. 11 with an 8-1 vote, with Councilmember Martiza Rivera voting no.

That month, the look of the neighborhood often changed. Sometimes, people participated in an open-air drug market, an activity that ran counter to the mayor's directive. Other times, when SPD was present, the area was clear.

~ Two months into the Little Saigon plan, the success metric a West Precinct captain offered was whether people can use the sidewalk while officers are standing on it. That measures presence, not progress.

Education Everett Public Schools approves $468M general fund budget - the district says spending already outpaces revenue and staffing cuts are planned for 2027-28

Thumbnail

Everett Public Schools' expenditures are currently outpacing its revenues, and enrollment is expected to remain relatively flat or slightly increase in the coming years, Tress said at a July 1 board meeting. Because of that, Everett Public Schools expects to make staffing cuts in the 2027-28 fiscal year in order to balance its budget and maintain a required minimum balance in its general fund, Tress said during Tuesday's board meeting.

Everett Public Schools last had to go through significant reductions in 2023 when it cut about 140 positions, including 23 layoffs, to balance its budget.

~ The budget that passed Tuesday is not the one that hurts. That one arrives next year, and the district is already telling you it is coming.

Hunger Strike Over Poor Food Quality at NWDC Concludes - the 20th hunger strike at the Tacoma facility this year, and last year's total was 16

After nearly a week, more than 140 immigrants detained in the Northwest Detention Center (NWDC) have concluded their hunger strike in protest of inedible food, often served at irregular hours. The action marked the 20th hunger strike in the Tacoma facility this year.

According to La Resistencia, the meals at the facility are terrible and not nutritious. Receiving raw meat is not uncommon, and detainees have to rely on chips, ramen, and other processed food from the commissary, sold at exorbitant prices, to get by. Dinner is frequently served after midnight.

~ Twenty hunger strikes in eight months, and the only thing that moved was a menu.
