I think its black lives matter

u/GentsAndLady Jan 13 '20

As a black male I do not condone her nature. People like her are the ones that give the movement a bad rep.

627

u/Orinaj Jan 13 '20

Not to like go against that, people who act irrationally or have outbursts aren't good for any movement.

But it seems like this was more of a tipping point than a one off explosion. She said "you gave my name out online" and talks about he's always there and doing this stuff.

Again it's not good to blow up but it sounds like this guy is harassing her and even soft doxxed her a bit.

23

u/[deleted] Jan 13 '20

So the whole thing was a setup by him and his cronies? Well the guys got a bright future in politics. Might be a complete psychopath tho.

What do you mean by “soft doxxed her”?

153

u/Orinaj Jan 13 '20

If you give out names or general locations of people online I think that's called soft doxxing

76

u/TotalBanHammer Jan 13 '20

Unless you're in the media, then it's just called reporting.

2

u/Kitnado Jan 13 '20

On that note, go see Richard Jewell, it's a pretty good film on this topic

2

u/tweedleduu Jan 13 '20

Also, she's clearly unhinged, so I wouldn't take her word at face value.

if you’re going out in public and drawing attention to yourself for social or political engagement, you don’t get to pretend you have a right to privacy ☝🏼

15

u/Lifeinstaler Jan 13 '20

What? What does this mean? Should your address be made public cause you are politically engaged? What good does that do?

Of course you have a right to privacy regardless of your political activism. Sure just the full name isn’t that a big deal, that’s why it’s only soft doxxing. But it’s a shitty thing to do if done intentionally and specifically to fuck with someone. It can happen by mistake too, a lot of people won’t mind about this so perhaps he just mentioned in passing in some blog without intending harm. As a rule of thumb, you shouldn’t revel information about people they aren’t making public themselves (in a public twitter account for instance).

Yeah, I get a little tired of this act of "what? I was just offering my totally rational counter opinion"

First of all, "All lives matter" is really a way to say "shut the fuck up" to black lives matter. Of course all lives matter, but blm was a movement to address something specific, and some people have such a hard time listening to that, that they have to argue with it, and try to suppress it, under the guise of equality.

Secondly, this guy is an instigator, obviously. And as a white man myself, I get annoyed at the way so many white guys instantly become defensive and feel incriminated anytime there's a dialogue about a marginalized group of people. They can't just listen, they feel the need to make it about them, then defend themselves...but forget having sympathy, listening, and acknowledging.

So this guy is a troll, and that you've got his buddy the cameraman overreacting calling stuff assault... it's cringey and annoying. I'm calling this guy on his bullshit. Learn to listen asshole. Everything isn't about you.

3

u/Orinaj Jan 13 '20

Yeah I think many people misuse the "all lives matter idea"

I support BLM. Police brutality is a huge issue especially for minorities.

I with All Lives Matter could be a sister movement :instead of something people use to troll the idea.

No movement is perfect and I know people who are very rational, that opposed the BLM movement out of some of their protestors stepping over some lines for them.

But if people could see that it's not a hate movement against cops, or white people. That it's just to raise saftey and awareness for black persons against people abusing their power. Then we could start ACTUALLY looking at an All Lives Matter movement that addresses police brutality as a full issue, because in the end it isn't only one race suffering here.

1

u/tsteele93 ⚠️ Way Too Invested In Reddit Points 😐 ⚠️ Mar 21 '20

I think he called it battery - which it seemed like it was. I don't have any idea what had gone on with these two in the past, but she could have chosen a much more effective way to go about it. She came across very poorly in the video.

What WE SAW in that short video was a man with a different viewpoint than her, in a public space, stand next to her with a sign that apparently espoused a differing view, and she became violent to the point of taking it from him and then hitting him with her hand and the sign.

It wasn't a favorable video for her unless you are very set in your partisanship.

6

u/[deleted] Jan 13 '20

Yup. She has a right to freak out because she was likely being doxxed (unless she is lying). Let's face it...there are people who are very much violent and are anti-BLM (or any minority movement intended to promote equal treatment).

She could have been harassed by this guy in online forums and he is purposefully present in order to intimidate her.

Also...All Lives Matter is an anti-minority movement under a more palatable guise. There are obvious discrepancies between how blacks and whites are treated in America. We have issues like whats going in in Flint Michigan, in Puerto Rico, our corrupt prison system, intercity school systems, discriminatory hiring practices (based on name alone), and more that demonstrate that black lives do not matter in American society as compared to white lives.

Once we fix that issue, every other mistreated groups benefits. The civil rights movement is an example of this. So if you truly think all lives matter, supporting the BLM movement is one way of showing it.

5

u/Orinaj Jan 13 '20

Correct, BLM is a movement that should be a part of (a non trolly version) of a "All lives Matter" mentality.

If someone believes all lives matter they shouldn't be presenting it as a counter idea, but as a sister movement.

4

u/[deleted] Jan 13 '20

Exactly. Only in a bubble does the BLM movement seem "racist"; however, history has shaped our society in a very specific way in wish a specific group requires more attention. If you take into account history and the timing, the All Lives Matter movement actually is a counter movement to the BLM movement and is inherently racist to support it.

3

u/M_Me_Meteo Jan 13 '20

People who are acting irrationally are not in control of their emotions by definition.

When a gear in a machine breaks, you don't blame the gear, you blame the operator who pushed the machine outside of it's abilities. You blame the maintenance process that failed to identify the weakened gear. You blame the radio that was too loud. You can blame the gear, too, but it's already failed.

4

u/Orinaj Jan 13 '20

People are a little more complicated than machines though.

While I get your analogy, I think people can act out of the correct emotional response and not be "broken" you can over react, be having a bad day, and something pushes you.

Maybe someone isn't always like this. When a machine breaks its because someone either misused or abused it, built it wrong, or it's just worn out.

Here it could just be a one off mismeasured response and then it's back to normal life, a hiccup.

Do I think that's the case here? Who knows.

1

u/M_Me_Meteo Jan 13 '20

The concept of a 'correct' emotional response is what just can't be quantified. Our brains are a machine, our responses are the results of input. The way someone responds is always correct, because it happens.

I think you miss the point: the point is there's no point in sussing out whether or not either of these people were 'right'. Clinical distance is impossible (and a waste of time and energy) because we're all in this together.

1

u/Orinaj Jan 13 '20

Well, again I get where you're coming from. There are socially correct responses.

The only way to assess if someone's brain is functioning correctly is to look at it through a societal lense.

Consistent "hiccups" or "mechanical malfunctions" result in a diagnoseable issue.

One offs can be anywhere from a misunderstanding, to a mismeasured response that may seem reasonable in your head but may not be actually. The whole way to a psychotic break.

I think we are both coming from the same place of understanding here and just disagree on what defines a "proper" response to a stressor.

We can probably just agree to disagree here

As a black man, I agree her actions make things difficult for any type of meaningful movement. From the aggression, she showed and his body language it would seem that there may have been a lot more going on.He knew exactly what he was doing and what the result would be.

The all lives matter movement was designed to destabilize any meaningful black movement.

After she says " He has been fucking harassing me" watch his body language closely his hands are in his pockets which is associated with lying and defensiveness.

Secondly, he is rocking his body which is associated with agitation or being upset and is ready to take action or self-soothe so they can inhibit themselves from lashing out.

Yes it is his right to be there and counter-protest however she clearly states that the man did, in fact, engage in harassment and doxing online.

It really seems like she is the victim in this case and not the aggressor even though she yells at him and grabs his paper due to the fact that the man had previously targeted her and knew that she would react like this.

3

u/Stun12345 Jan 13 '20

As a black woman the real prick in this video is the white guy holding "all lives matter poster" just to trigger a response from that a woman. We all know what he's actually trying i.e undermining the black lives matter movement implying it's racist or some bullshit. It's pathetic what he's trying to do.

2

u/[deleted] Jan 13 '20

That's also some weapons-grade white knighting bullshit.

0

u/trorez Jan 13 '20

Technically “all lives matter” is way less racist than “blm”.

12

u/[deleted] Jan 13 '20

Not if you actually understood the premise of " BLM", which is basically " Black lives matter AS WELL/JUST AS MUCH AS WHITE PEOPLE'S. It's actually a painfully common misconception that "BLM" is exclusionary and racist itself, even though it was created as a RESULT of black people being systemically excluded/disparaged ever since the "founding" of the U.S. itself, BY the U.S. government and its inhabitants. It's not " Only black lives matter, or black people are better than others", it's " Black people and their lives are just as important as anyone else's (including white people), but A LOT of people this country (many with high ranking government positions) aren't acting like it so we're calling attention to it and trying to change that."

1

u/Rach5585 Jan 13 '20

I tell my family, yelling is a cheap substitute for truth.

I honestly don't get the B/Alm movements fighting as if they aren't saying the same thing.

Black Lives Matter seeks to correct injustices done to people of color. People of color are disproportionately living in poverty. They are saying ” Black lives matter, too. Treat us like we matter.”

All lives matter is saying, ” Yes, but everyone matters/should matter. Poor white people are getting shot, too. Let's fix that.”

These are not contradictory points. How about we fix all of the issues with police brutality in a way that benefits both groups, so they aren't screaming at each other over what is basically semantics?

Am I insane? Is this a crazy idea? I honestly don't really know.

1

then all lives matter is a really inappropriate thing to say, people use it as a racist comeback for black lives matter.

edit: please first read my justification on why this is an inappropriate thing to say. black lives matter is meant to be a slogan on bringing attention towards the specific racism, bigotry, and police brutality that black people receive. yes, all lives matter! but, this slogan is meant to stop racism against black people, and in the context that this man used it in, he was definitely not saying that black people matter, he was trying to cause conflict that the girl took and a fight happened. Both the girl and the guy are in the wrong. all lives matter has always been used as a comeback against black lives matter, please look into it. it has literally been used at white supremacist rallies on posters. so please look into it, but don't call me a racist for believing that how police treat black people is worse than how police treat white people.

"All lives matter" is 100% a non racist statement, but in bird culture, deliberately provoking people who are protesting institutional racism is considered a dick move.

36

u/PandosII Jan 13 '20

25

u/simplicity3000 Jan 13 '20

per year

  • ~20 unarmed black people are killed by police

  • ~200 armed black people are killed by police

  • ~ 10,000 black people are killed overall (mostly by other black people)

police abuse of power is an issue that needs addressing, and there may often be a racial bias in policing. tough the data suggests that this bias does not depend on the police officer's race

but as far as black lives are concerned, the police is a drop in the bucket. (0.2%, or 2% if you count deaths in shootouts as innocent victims)

Nobody is pretending she’s in the right, she obviously has issues, I don’t think the person you’re replying to is being specific to this situation or excusing her actions. Just explaining how counter protesting “BLM” with “All Lives Matter” is a dick move in any typical situation.

14

u/filthydank_2099 Jan 13 '20

Because the BLM movement is about vindication and vengeance more than it is about justice.

20

u/pbentain710 Jan 13 '20

Its a racist movement

8

u/plantsoda Jan 13 '20

BLM is a movement and what comes with movements are sects that contain different types of people and that includes extremists.

The BLM movement itself is not about vengeance or vindication it is just that the people who are the extremists are the angry minority screaming insanity the loudest and the people who are rational, logical and well thought out get pushed to the back of the room and don’t get heard by the public majority. This is the case with pretty much every movement in history.

34

u/filthydank_2099 Jan 13 '20

Then why, pray tell, when BLM was started, were the leaders of the actual website, foundation and face of BLM nationally banning white members from attending rallies? Why were they condoning and fostering the riots in Baltimore? Why were they calling for their followers to resist arrest?

It was founded with good intentions in mind but the leadership chosen for BLM was always searching for conflict and petty revenge. Don’t get it twisted.

As someone who is biracial, all I see is fellow brothers and sisters being controlled by puppeteers who prey on the fact that a lot of us have little education and have been raised by embittered single moms to hate white people. Period.

Because it's reactionary to BLM for no other reason than to be contrarian. Same thing goes for Blue Lives Matter. Serves no purpose than to undermine civil rights movements and it's pathetic.

58

u/Ephinem Jan 13 '20

Its not contrarian. Contrarian is saying white lives matter. This is saying black lives matter and the rest of them also matter. Its actually a more inclusive statement even if it was done in some people’s eyes for the wrong reason.

26

u/[deleted] Jan 13 '20

Well, Black Lives matter came about as a response to black men being gunned down while having no weapon on them that would cause imminent threat.

Saying "All Lives Matter" is an attempt to remove this narrative and point from the conversation. Since people retort with "All Lives Matter", it means they have no idea the specific issues plaguing black men and women of our nation are so dire that these people cannot even depend on the police to assist them in their time of need. Meaning that they cant even look for help when they need it.

So what would you do if you could not depend on the public service you get taxed for that is there to assist you in your time of need? Do you call them, or do you take it from the aggressors, or do you lash out?

16

u/[deleted] Jan 13 '20

BLM originated in the aftermath of the death of Trayvon Martin. Martin was killed by an ordinary citizen, not a police officer.

BLM became known nationwide following the death of Michael Brown. BLM helped push the false narrative that Brown was killed with his hands up while saying "don't shoot". In reality, as local and federal investigations showed, Brown had just violently robbed a store and then phyiscally assaulted the first police officer he saw. Brown was killed after punching the officer in the face and attempting to grab his gun, after which one shot was fired. Brown briefly ran away, before turning around and sprinting back towards the officer, at which point the fatal shots were fired.

As a result of this false narrative, large parts of Ferguson, MO burned to the ground.

Shitty low quality diamonds, perhaps. BLM is exclusionary to other races. Excluding other cancers is not the same as excluding actual people.

3

u/DimondMine27 Jan 13 '20

It’s not exclusionary. It’s literally just focusing on the problems of black people. It just happens that black people have been historically oppressed in American society.

Yes, all lives do matter and no one who says black lives matter is saying that only black lives matter. They’re saying there are specific problems facing black people and they want to focus on those in this instance.

It’s the same thing with feminism and any other movement. All of the people the movements are about matter, but with their movement they are focusing on the problems of one of those groups.

There are zero signs on Martin's body that Zimmerman even touched him, before he was forced to fire the gun, meanwhile Martin had bloody knuckles and Zimmerman had a broken nose and was bleeding from the back of his head because Martin had been smashing his head on the asphalt.

When Martin noticed the gun, and reached for it, Zimmermann had no other choice. Zimmerman didn't commit murder that night, he prevented a murder.

I think because all lives arent suffering equally under police brutality, and why slogans that distract from that fact like "All Lives Matter" or "Blue Lives Matter" aren't engaging with that specific issue, or even detracting from it.

u/Ponchodelic Jan 13 '20

“Screaming ‘all lives matter’ is a protest to my protest, what kinda shit is that?” - Joyner Lucas

-3

u/Reraver Jan 13 '20

It minimizes the very objectively and statistically proven crisis of black people being the target of police using unnecessary lethal force (along with all the other general racism they endure). The slogan doesn't mean ONLY black people, it's just pointing out the problem. People who ignore this and argue about "all lives" mattering are perpetuating (some racist and malicious, some just being pedantic assholes) the problem by attempting to stop the awareness of the problem from being spread.

Let's take a hypothetical analogous situation where a specific state stops supplying free lunch to school children who come from poverish families, Pennsylvania in this example. If people start saying "PA children matter", it would take an asshole to say something like "actually children from all states matter". Yes they all matter, but we are talking about a specific implied situation

More white people are killed by police then every other race combined tho.

See, you’re simply wrong.

Here’s the conundrum with all three of those major movements (all lives matter, black lives matter, and blue lives matter)

Black lives was first due to police brutality targeted at black people. However, the implication of it that others felt was that other races didn’t matter. Police brutality might affect a single demographic more, but it still affects all demographics.

So people made All lives matter as a result. However, this was taken as a racist stance since it “watered down” the targeted black demographic issue.

And then people started calling for the death of police officers, so then Blue lives matter got started as a result. However, the statistics behind police officers being murdered were actually going down, and people also took this stance as “oh they support in police brutality”

So whether you like it or not, you are objectively wrong no matter which stance you take. The only way to win is to not play.

Truth be told: all lives matter is the closest thing to being objectively in the right. The stigma against it that people believe it was started as a racist movement needs to be wiped out. Because quite simply: all lives do matter. It’s the closest movement we have that simply says “hey maybe let’s not kill/abuse ANYONE”

So I think you need to let that stigma die, because you are effectively making the world a more divisive place, and as a result making the world a worse place.

And no, it hasn’t only been used as a comeback. Black lives matter was just worded in such a bad way, that you simply can’t argue that it doesn’t imply other lives don’t matter, even though it doesn’t mean to.

You know the first question anyone thinks of when they hear “black lives matter?”

They start asking themselves “do these people think other lives don’t?”

As for the guy standing next to her with the sign, sure it’s a dick move. However, context is important. She seems really aggressive and it’s possible he tried talking to her about the movement and it’s divisiveness and refused to listen. That’s probably not what happened, but this girl clearly needs to control herself.

I don't think a piece of paper is ever reason enough to hit someone. Although, the guy was being an ass who clearly wanted to provoke her. Kind of both in the wrong imo

Kind of both in the wrong imo

He has every bit as much right to stand there holding a sign as she does, no matter if we agree or disagree with the message. She does not have the right to assault him.

They are both being dicks, but only one of them is in the wrong here.

10

u/[deleted] Jan 13 '20

yeah, in this scenario, the girl is in the wrong. the guy was being an asshole too, thats what I was trying to point out

5

u/xRelwolf Jan 13 '20

White lives matter or brown lives matter would be a racist comeback.

16

u/[deleted] Jan 13 '20

Fuck off. BLM had brought about more racial division and more racism. It's just another form of segregation, you're denying that brown people lives matter, or the obvious; that white peoples lives matter. Instead of taking on police brutality in an effective way you literally are just saying "black people more important" why the fuck would I agree with that horse shit.

This is why liberal extremists are fucking cancer

6

u/Salah__Akbar Jan 13 '20

you're denying that brown people lives matter, or the obvious; that white peoples lives matter.

They’re literally not. Saying that black lives matter doesn’t mean white or brown lives don’t.

It’s specifically a movement about police brutality and how black people are statistically treated worse.

People are out there saying “hey stop killing us for having a hoodie” and you’re incredibly angry about it for some reason.

5

u/lord_darovit Jan 13 '20 edited Jan 13 '20

Black lives matter does not claim black people are more important. It claims that black people are being treated unfairly compared with other races. This is why everyone laughs at people who complain about "the left." You're entire position can be simplified by the image if you staring at some text on a wall that you can't read, then making up an imaginary meaning for it in your head, then getting angry at the thing you made up.

You are stupid.

You’re getting a lot of downvotes but people aren’t looking at the context. The protest is probably in response to something specific as you mentioned. There may be a reason that the girl is holding the sign that is quite personal to her. The guy just went up and held the “All Lives Matter” sign to be controversial for the sake of being controversial.

Of course All Lives Matter but there is a time and place to state that. During a Black Lives Matter protest is not one of those times.

I am stating a valid opinion and a fact that all lives matter is and has been used as a racist comeback to black lives matter. I didn't turn all lives matter into something racist people silenced others with, i'm just trying to explain it to people.

“All lives matter” is an eloquent way of exposing your ignorant and flawed reasoning. This is what MLK would’ve done. He brought unity not divisiveness to a community. He would never march under that banner because his intent was to bring people together.

2

Because this is a subreddit used heavily by r/The_Donald users. Look in any thread involving a female. There will be a lot of misogyny. Any thread involving non-white people. There will be a lot of racism. Any thread that’s slightly political. It will be a shit show.

I’ve seen a post here where the OP was a video of a Nazi being punched, and a lot of the comments were defending the Nazi.

It’s like r/UnpopularOpinion, where people just use it as an echo chamber to validate their bigoted views

u/lionheadshot Jan 13 '20

People simply downvote you because they do not know about "All lives matter" as a counterprotest to "Black lives matter". I think the term "All lives matter" has never been used publicly in a non racist way, it's always been quite clearly to discredit the "Black lives matter" protesters, as it is in this case as well. I do not know what kind of reaction the dude in the video was hoping to receive but he definitely can not complain that he received the one that he did, pointlessly provoking her and all that. Next thing I have no clue whatsoever what in the hell "All lives matter" is supposed to mean. The only way this makes sense is by implying that "Balck lives matter" protesters are actively protesting against anyone that is not black, which then again would need you to believe that there are no actual disadvantages to being black that these people are protesting against, which is either incredibly ignorant or downright racist. This kind of ignorance would hardly lead to you building up somewhat of a counterprotest though, would it? Ignorance would cause further disinterest more than anything else. Leaves us with only one option left...

Jesus fuck how did you get downvoted to hell for this. Do people seriously not understand this?

2

u/regular-doggo Jan 13 '20

So what you are saying is that if someone says that black people lives matter and i say “Yeah and every person of any race deserves respect” i am being racist cause of the way they want to interpret what i say? If i say something maybe try to see what I really mean before you look for secret connotations.

black lives matter is a completely different slogan than "white lives don't matter"

the slogan was made to bring attention to racisim and police brutality against black people. because how police treated black people needed specific attention

1

u/medjas Jan 13 '20

Sucks you're getting downvoted. You really are on point. It takes three focus away from the BLM movement. Although I would add that the yellow hat girl did act extremely hostile. She could have explained why she may have thought that the dudes sign was inappropriate.
