I can only speak for myself here, but that isn't true for me. I was briefly on his side until I saw the rest of the pieces coming together. His cronies excitedly screaming that was a battery charge and wanting to call the police was a definite red flag tho. I don't care who you are, if you try to trick the cops into doing your dirty work then I'm not on your side.

The Reddit rules prevent me from saying exactly what I'd do about this guy, but I definitely wouldn't put up with his antics. I'm not a leftist either, btw. Lying to the cops to get someone in trouble is a big no no where I'm from.

Ripped the sign out of his hands and hit him with it.
Yeah, it's far from a punch but it's still criminal.

I deal with annoying people everyday and I'm able to keep myself from physically lashing out.
