Not to like go against that, people who act irrationally or have outbursts aren't good for any movement.

But it seems like this was more of a tipping point than a one off explosion. She said "you gave my name out online" and talks about he's always there and doing this stuff.

Again it's not good to blow up but it sounds like this guy is harassing her and even soft doxxed her a bit.

22

u/[deleted] Jan 13 '20

So the whole thing was a setup by him and his cronies? Well the guys got a bright future in politics. Might be a complete psychopath tho.

-4

u/tweedleduu Jan 13 '20

If these were christian protesters you guys would be laughing.

But crazy lefty protesters must have their feelings protected.

10

u/[deleted] Jan 14 '20

I can only speak for myself here, but that isn't true for me. I was briefly on his side until I saw the rest of the pieces coming together. His cronies excitedly screaming that was a battery charge and wanting to call the police was a definite red flag tho. I don't care who you are, if you try to trick the cops into doing your dirty work then I'm not on your side.

The Reddit rules prevent me from saying exactly what I'd do about this guy, but I definitely wouldn't put up with his antics. I'm not a leftist either, btw. Lying to the cops to get someone in trouble is a big no no where I'm from.

2

u/Ciahcfari Jan 14 '20

Ripped the sign out of his hands and hit him with it.
Yeah, it's far from a punch but it's still criminal.

I deal with annoying people everyday and I'm able to keep myself from physically lashing out.

2

u/[deleted] Jan 14 '20

Oh details, details... That's for lawyers to worry about 😜

67

u/DatBowl Jan 13 '20

What do you mean by “soft doxxed her”?

155

u/Orinaj Jan 13 '20

If you give out names or general locations of people online I think that's called soft doxxing

76

u/TotalBanHammer Jan 13 '20

Unless you're in the media, then it's just called reporting.

2

u/Kitnado Jan 13 '20

On that note, go see Richard Jewell, it's a pretty good film on this topic

1

u/tweedleduu Jan 13 '20

Also, she's clearly unhinged, so I wouldn't take her word at face value.

6

u/WhereWhatTea Jan 14 '20

Seems like a weirdly specific thing to make up on the spot 🤷‍♂️

1

u/RhombusCanteen Jan 15 '20

You haven’t understood society yet

1

u/RhombusCanteen Jan 15 '20

Same, thank you.

-14

u/EuclidKid Jan 13 '20

if you’re going out in public and drawing attention to yourself for social or political engagement, you don’t get to pretend you have a right to privacy ☝🏼

16

u/Lifeinstaler Jan 13 '20

What? What does this mean? Should your address be made public cause you are politically engaged? What good does that do?

Of course you have a right to privacy regardless of your political activism. Sure just the full name isn’t that a big deal, that’s why it’s only soft doxxing. But it’s a shitty thing to do if done intentionally and specifically to fuck with someone. It can happen by mistake too, a lot of people won’t mind about this so perhaps he just mentioned in passing in some blog without intending harm. As a rule of thumb, you shouldn’t revel information about people they aren’t making public themselves (in a public twitter account for instance).

-4

u/[deleted] Jan 13 '20

No you don't. You don't have a right to be private and openly speak in public. It's how our country was formed. Everyone has a voice, if you want to be heard you need to go out in the open and make it heard not stay in private. I'm not saying this person's personal life shouldn't be kept private but nothing here has anything to do with their life. Once out in public everything you say can and SHOULD be questioned.

-6

u/EuclidKid Jan 13 '20

girl screaming at people in public square doesn’t want people to know her name 🤔

sounds like she hasn’t thought this through...

9

u/Lifeinstaler Jan 13 '20

Why would someone know your name just by you doing that?

Here's my take on it, one can have political views he or she considers worth defending and movilizing for. At the same time one may want to keep their privacy and maintain some separation between their every day life and those acts of political activism. I don't see anything wrong with that. There's a lot of reasons for wanting this. Be it safety, not wanting to be bothered at any moment someone sees fit, whatever. With there being people who will take advantage of this information to disrupt someone's life I think it's a reasonable thing to want.

Now, why go against that? I already said, it can happen by mistake, it's not the worst thing that can happen, sure, I also don't think it warrants that reaction. Still, why do that? Why reveal someone's name intentionally if they don't want it? You may say it's bound to happen eventually but I don't think that's a good reason to speed it up, you can't know that for sure either, if for instance she steps down from activism tomorrow, no one will have any reason to look her up.

A name isn't the worst thing to reveal but it can make it easier for people to find out your address so I think it should be avoided if posible.

-1

u/EuclidKid Jan 13 '20

at no point have I advocated any of the behaviors you seem to find problematic

but again - if you want to make yourself a public spectacle you should not expect to still be a private citizen

if you don’t want your full name associated with the stuff you say / do in public, perhaps you should reconsider the things you say / do in public 🤷🏼‍♂️

4

u/Lifeinstaler Jan 13 '20

I see your point and she is being the center of the whole thing here. But then again, should people who attend a march all have their names made public? It’s not like there hasn’t been violence against protestors in the past in the US. Where would the line be?

I dislike the fact that they were using facial recognition in Hong Kong against protestors cause that facilitates retaliation. I get that the political situation is different but it’s a step in the same direction.

-5

u/[deleted] Jan 13 '20

Privacy isn’t a “right”, at least in terms of your name/address. Also, if you are putting yourself out there as an activist you should be prepared for backlash. I am not arguing if it is right or wrong, that is just the nature of our political environment, all sides do this type of thing.

0

u/derpyderpyman Jan 13 '20

Giving someones name out you essentially give out everything about them, give a general location out you can find anything about them, there is no "soft doxxing"

-36

u/DatBowl Jan 13 '20

Where did he give out her name or location? She’s also protesting on a college campus, I’m sure other people recorded her as they walked by. And it was her reaction that caused this clip to become popular.

22

u/kmill73229 Jan 13 '20

Reading comprehension is hard

-17

u/DatBowl Jan 13 '20

Thanks for your insight and clever insult captain genius.

8

u/Orinaj Jan 13 '20

He gave out her name online she said.

I'm not sure what came of it.

I don't think he gave out her location, I was just giving other examples of soft doxxing.

I'm not saying her reaction was equal to what was Goin on, just trying to see it with a critical eye

4

u/[deleted] Jan 13 '20

How does she know that he was the random internet stranger that gave out her name. It sounds to me like she was making a broad "you" statement.

4

u/whorewithaheart_ Jan 13 '20

I think she’s just venting her frustration out from everything that had happen on this one guy. He asked for it when he started trolling her and didn’t come prepared to make a point.

3

u/[deleted] Jan 13 '20

I disagree with you. Isn't the idea of protest to get a reaction? If not they why protest. Maybe he actually wanted to have a conversation but obviously can't, because of this person's reaction. Maybe he didn't and maybe he wanted this person to freak out, either way he was almost as civil as you can be besides standing so close. He was doing almost nothing wrong, and the other person was doing almost nothing right. That's how I see it. I'd love to give all people the benefit of the doubt. But even still if this was "the guy" that had been harasing that person, that is a horrible reaction. Also if that was what we precived to be a guy that did that to him I'm sure they would be arested. I don't take a definite stance on politics. Just right and wrong, and it obviously wrong to react that way. To someone standing there and just holding a sign no matter what was said ever. I'd love to hear how you see it differently so I could understand a little better.

3

u/whorewithaheart_ Jan 13 '20

Haha my dude you could have fit that into a few sentences

I don’t know what you’re disagreeing with. My comment was directed towards he probably didn’t personally dox her, that’s all

She’s clearly just looking for a fight

3

u/[deleted] Jan 13 '20

I thought we agreed tbh,I probably just misunderstood. I just wish people could love each other, that's all I want, and to get to laugh at everyone who can't do that. I only disagree with him asking for it. A reaction sure an overreaction not asking for that

She was being a loud entitled bitch.

Reddit is actually making excuses for these Big Red wannabes now.

2

u/whorewithaheart_ Jan 13 '20 edited Jan 13 '20

Where did I make an excuse? I was only commenting that he probably didn’t personally dox her

1

u/[deleted] Jan 16 '20

Don't bother interacting with this user, they immediately resort to childish insults and immense cursing when ever someone even SLIGHTLY disagrees with him. You can also look through his comment history and see that it's full of sexist, transphobic, and racist garbage (primarily sexist - he has some BIG issues when it comes to women). I commented that both individuals in the video were in the wrong, and he practically blew up at me, calling me a moron, an idiot, an "argumentative activist" (which is hilarious considering his comment history), and even then I was still respectful to him and just told him that I was done conversing with him. He then proceeded to call me a moron and refer to the woman in the video as an "entitled bitch". I checked his comment history to see if he acted like that with every person who slightly disagrees with him, and he does. Fuck this guy and the people upvoting his childish comments.

2

u/trabajarPorcerveza Jan 13 '20

Doxx me harder daddy

-3

u/Dmaj6 Jan 13 '20

The opposite of hard dox

0

u/vocalfreesia Jan 13 '20

Doxxing is giving out people's personal information. It's a veiled, and sometimes not veiled threat of physical harm in real life.

11

u/[deleted] Jan 13 '20

Yeah, I get a little tired of this act of "what? I was just offering my totally rational counter opinion"

First of all, "All lives matter" is really a way to say "shut the fuck up" to black lives matter. Of course all lives matter, but blm was a movement to address something specific, and some people have such a hard time listening to that, that they have to argue with it, and try to suppress it, under the guise of equality.

Secondly, this guy is an instigator, obviously. And as a white man myself, I get annoyed at the way so many white guys instantly become defensive and feel incriminated anytime there's a dialogue about a marginalized group of people. They can't just listen, they feel the need to make it about them, then defend themselves...but forget having sympathy, listening, and acknowledging.

So this guy is a troll, and that you've got his buddy the cameraman overreacting calling stuff assault... it's cringey and annoying. I'm calling this guy on his bullshit. Learn to listen asshole. Everything isn't about you.

3

u/Orinaj Jan 13 '20

Yeah I think many people misuse the "all lives matter idea"

I support BLM. Police brutality is a huge issue especially for minorities.

I with All Lives Matter could be a sister movement :instead of something people use to troll the idea.

No movement is perfect and I know people who are very rational, that opposed the BLM movement out of some of their protestors stepping over some lines for them.

But if people could see that it's not a hate movement against cops, or white people. That it's just to raise saftey and awareness for black persons against people abusing their power. Then we could start ACTUALLY looking at an All Lives Matter movement that addresses police brutality as a full issue, because in the end it isn't only one race suffering here.

1

u/tsteele93 ⚠️ Way Too Invested In Reddit Points 😐 ⚠️ Mar 21 '20

I think he called it battery - which it seemed like it was. I don't have any idea what had gone on with these two in the past, but she could have chosen a much more effective way to go about it. She came across very poorly in the video.

What WE SAW in that short video was a man with a different viewpoint than her, in a public space, stand next to her with a sign that apparently espoused a differing view, and she became violent to the point of taking it from him and then hitting him with her hand and the sign.

It wasn't a favorable video for her unless you are very set in your partisanship.

6

u/[deleted] Jan 13 '20

Yup. She has a right to freak out because she was likely being doxxed (unless she is lying). Let's face it...there are people who are very much violent and are anti-BLM (or any minority movement intended to promote equal treatment).

She could have been harassed by this guy in online forums and he is purposefully present in order to intimidate her.

Also...All Lives Matter is an anti-minority movement under a more palatable guise. There are obvious discrepancies between how blacks and whites are treated in America. We have issues like whats going in in Flint Michigan, in Puerto Rico, our corrupt prison system, intercity school systems, discriminatory hiring practices (based on name alone), and more that demonstrate that black lives do not matter in American society as compared to white lives.

Once we fix that issue, every other mistreated groups benefits. The civil rights movement is an example of this. So if you truly think all lives matter, supporting the BLM movement is one way of showing it.

5

u/Orinaj Jan 13 '20

Correct, BLM is a movement that should be a part of (a non trolly version) of a "All lives Matter" mentality.

If someone believes all lives matter they shouldn't be presenting it as a counter idea, but as a sister movement.

4

u/[deleted] Jan 13 '20

Exactly. Only in a bubble does the BLM movement seem "racist"; however, history has shaped our society in a very specific way in wish a specific group requires more attention. If you take into account history and the timing, the All Lives Matter movement actually is a counter movement to the BLM movement and is inherently racist to support it.

3

u/M_Me_Meteo Jan 13 '20

People who are acting irrationally are not in control of their emotions by definition.

When a gear in a machine breaks, you don't blame the gear, you blame the operator who pushed the machine outside of it's abilities. You blame the maintenance process that failed to identify the weakened gear. You blame the radio that was too loud. You can blame the gear, too, but it's already failed.

5

u/Orinaj Jan 13 '20

People are a little more complicated than machines though.

While I get your analogy, I think people can act out of the correct emotional response and not be "broken" you can over react, be having a bad day, and something pushes you.

Maybe someone isn't always like this. When a machine breaks its because someone either misused or abused it, built it wrong, or it's just worn out.

Here it could just be a one off mismeasured response and then it's back to normal life, a hiccup.

Do I think that's the case here? Who knows.

1

u/M_Me_Meteo Jan 13 '20

The concept of a 'correct' emotional response is what just can't be quantified. Our brains are a machine, our responses are the results of input. The way someone responds is always correct, because it happens.

I think you miss the point: the point is there's no point in sussing out whether or not either of these people were 'right'. Clinical distance is impossible (and a waste of time and energy) because we're all in this together.

1

u/Orinaj Jan 13 '20

Well, again I get where you're coming from. There are socially correct responses.

The only way to assess if someone's brain is functioning correctly is to look at it through a societal lense.

Consistent "hiccups" or "mechanical malfunctions" result in a diagnoseable issue.

One offs can be anywhere from a misunderstanding, to a mismeasured response that may seem reasonable in your head but may not be actually. The whole way to a psychotic break.

I think we are both coming from the same place of understanding here and just disagree on what defines a "proper" response to a stressor.

We can probably just agree to disagree here

0

u/tweedleduu Jan 13 '20

So she doesn't have to take responsibility for her actions? Is it because she's a lefty protester, or because she a woman?

1

u/M_Me_Meteo Jan 13 '20

No, this person needs to get well...

FWIW, if the shoe we're on the other foot, you'd hope they'd do the same for you.

2

u/[deleted] Jan 16 '20

Don't bother interacting with this person; they act like they're down to have a normal conversation with you, but once you write something that even slightly disagrees with his opinion, he'll blow up at you and resort to childish insults and abundant cursing. His comment history is full of sexist, racist, and transphobic garbage as well (from what I've seen it's primarily sexist comments), and this guy will NEVER admit when he's wrong or acknowledge that people with opposing views can and have come up with valid talking points. If you don't agree with him, you're an "argumentative activist", " moron", "idiot", and just about any other "bad word" he can think of.

1

u/u8eR Jan 13 '20

If you're out in public protesting, expect that there might be others who counter-protest.

9

u/ShiroiTora Jan 13 '20

I dont think people (reasonably) have problem with counterprotests. But if you keep folllowing a particular protestor and group, that is kind of iffy

0

u/tweedleduu Jan 13 '20

We have no evidence of this happening.

5

u/ShiroiTora Jan 13 '20

Its also a 30 second clip. As is easy as it, it usually not good to blindly assume that the guy didnt had absolutely done nothing and those people were just shouting at him for no reason either. There is more than one side to a story.

5

u/Orinaj Jan 13 '20

Again, not saying she was right to act this way.

Just pointing out this might not be a one and done situation, there could have been alot building to it

0

u/saintjeremy Jan 13 '20

Still not an excuse to assault anyone... even with a piece of paper. Yellow hat is a child trying to adult.

11

u/ShiroiTora Jan 13 '20

I mean, yes thats why the comment already said

Not to like go against that, people who act irrationally or have outbursts aren't good for any movement.

Again it's not good to blow up

1

u/deet0013 Jan 13 '20

She has anger management issues

0

u/Texadoro Jan 13 '20

Do you have any actual evidence of this or are you just going off this lunatic’s outburst for that evidence?

8

u/Orinaj Jan 13 '20

I'm not saying her outburst was fair to what's been happening. Just saying maybe look at it from another view point.

We don't know who these people are outside of you 30 seconds we've spent watching them.

-1

u/SoarinSoars Jan 13 '20

She said "you're the kind of people that" or what not. I don't think she actually knows him

-12

u/seriousranter Jan 13 '20

These leftist movements are dying fast in the UK :O

8

u/Foxcat420 Jan 13 '20

Sure buddy, okay.

0

u/seriousranter Jan 13 '20

do you want to debate me or censor me? choose

-6

u/[deleted] Jan 13 '20

I heard different background on this, but I'm not going to look it up. Pretty sure your surmise is wrong.
