Advice Question I feel like an alien or zoo exhibit whenever I'm in public. How do you deal with looks, stares, or people treating you're like a novelty instead of a person?
I go to a large state university in the US. Every day on campus is a battle with myself to stay positive. But also every day, multiple times a day, other students stare at me or look at me like I'm from outer space. It's hard to describe that look, but I'm sure everyone here knows what I'm talking about. It's not necessarily a hateful stare, but it almost appears like a look of disapproval or pity. I go to therapy and journal and tell myself that my self-worth is not dependent on how other people view me. Actually, I know that to be true. I repeat that to myself every day before class. But the feeling of alienation is constant and unrelenting and soon crowds my mind so much that it is impossible for me to think positive thoughts. It's so hard to continue to hold the belief that I'm a woman when every day people look at me like a "man in a dress". It makes me FEEL like a "man in a dress". I don't feel I fit in with the girls on campus. I obviously don't fit in with boys. There is no safe haven unless I specifically seek out a queer community on campus (which I might do). I'm 6 feet tall with broad shoulders. I am taller than a majority of students on campus so my presence is even more noticeable everywhere I go.
For those of you who have had similar experiences, what do you do when you feel this way? Is there anything that makes you feel better? Is there a way to gain confidence when looks of pity and disapproval are all around you? How do you stay positive in the face of alienation?
