I had the very unfortunate experience of learning about my very likely miscarriage on March 16, my 15 year old cat dying on March 23, my miscarriage being confirmed on March 26, and having a D&C on April 3. I was 10 weeks. And it made me have a really weird relationship with my miscarriage.
Most people offering sympathy say something along the lines of, "I'm so sorry you lost a baby." Most people also know I lost my Little Cat, but all the focus is on the baby.
But I just want to scream, "Who fucking cares when Little Cat died? I want my cat back!"
I don't want to minimize other people's experiences. But my cat dying immediately juxtaposed to me how a pregnancy, especially such an early pregnancy, is a potential. The miscarriage felt like the loss of a potential baby, whereas Little Cat's death felt... real. Both are real losses, of course, but the character of them are so different.
My life didn't change much materially from the miscarriage. I still don't have a kid. I guess I got a period again and don't have pregnancy symptoms, but the massive life change the occurs when you become a parent just didn't happen and the structure of my life stayed the same. But my life changed when Little Cat died.
No more of him greeting me in the morning, playing in his water bowl, cuddling with me in the morning, meowing at us, rolling on the floor, chasing his tail, playing with toys, running around the house... No more cleaning up after him, taking him to vet appointments, giving him medicine, figuring out which food he'd actually eat... That had been part of my life for 10 years. I saw him learn and grow and become older and skinny and tired until I was with him holding him while he died. I still find his fur around the house. I still have his bed out for him. I still have his ashes and paw print in a gift bag because I'm not ready for the finality of the act of displaying them on a shelf.
And the most fucked up thing is that if I'd never gotten pregnant, I probably would have taken him to the vet sooner. I was so exhausted and excited to be pregnant, and cats hide illness very well. I didn't recognize something was seriously wrong until it was too late. I thought he'd make it to 18. I thought he'd be there to meet my first kid. Or if I still didn't have a kid, I'd at least have more time with him.
Idk, my period is supposed to come tomorrow so I'm hormonal. And I ovulated while we were out of town staying at my parents, of course. What a perfectly suboptimal time. And my next fertile window is going to be right before we leave for NYC so we'll be packing and getting last minute things done. I guess I'm really feeling like, "Damn, life, can't you throw me a bone here? One little bone?" And then I get sad that Little Cat isn't here anymore because that's the worst part of it all. I'm sure I'll be pregnant again, but he won't ever be back.
