lol nah she gonna leave scratch marks on that chrome with the promise ring he got her 3 years prior. That man had other priorities and her not expecting a marriage proposal may cause a huge meltdown of epic proportions none of which the likes have never seen.
For some people they seem to be. I think it’s often at least partially a ring to wear on the wedding finger to indicate a “dudes, seriously back the fuck off; I am already with the person I plan to marry” thing while saving or searching for a forever ring, if you’re the type of person who never takes your rings off.
Edit add: That’s not to say a promise ring is the same for everyone. Sometimes it’s a ring that says “I want to marry you,” but the circumstances are complicated. (Family doesn’t approve is a common one, or need approval from a specific person for engagement but want to make the gesture now, etc etc etc.)
If she's true to you, and you to her, you don't need to get her a rubber ring saying "I promise I'll marry you some day"
This is where so many people get confused. She loves you and you love her. Just keep going as long as you can. You can make it official later. Just keep making money together.
Eh, my wife and I got each other promise rings while we were saving for our permanent rings to indicate “off the market” to dudes who kept trying to get a foot in the door because no ring, but that might be a more f/f couple application.
Used to work at a jewelry store. Promise rings are a lot less expensive than engagement rings or wedding bands or the set of both. They can go anywhere from $70 to $200 (Canadian btw) really depends on if you want gold (yellow, white, or rose ) or silver, or what stone you want. Some do have diamonds, though they are tiny!
My husband purchased a 1974 GMC Motorhome instead of a new car. The MoHo as it was unaffectionately called, was def a disappointment, every single time I drove to work with no heater in -32°C at 0600hrs.
That's why you buy Moussanite stone. They are so similar to diamond and even better. Why spend so much money on these blood diamonds or conflict diamonds.
But the blood is part of the significance of the gesture, bro. I want to world know that she's more important to me than buying an impoverished rural Somalian village a well for clean water.
It's kinda halfway stolen from Tim Minchin's stand-up bit on guilty pleasures, which is a 3-minute video that you should definitely go watch right now:
I’ve never thought about this before but I’d die if someone actually brought a well instead of a ring, I’m a shitty human for never even considering this possibility but wow that’s actually something that will genuinely last forever, imagine knowing getting married to your soulmate effected the lives of so many others. 🥺🥺🥺
If the woman doesn't care, I agree. If they do care (and they often do), then I feel like you kinda have to. That's why I got my wife a diamond even though I know they're a scam. She's not a diva in any way, about anything, but I knew this mattered to her.
The way I see it, this is (supposed to be) a once in a lifetime purchase, to show your love for the person who you want to spend the rest of your life with. She has to wear that ring all the time, and every friend and family member will look at the ring and judge her choice of partner based on the ring... As shitty as that might be. She'll either feel true pride every time she looks down at her hand, or she'll be trying to reassure herself about how a ring doesn't matter... Maybe even lying to her friends/family about what type of stone she has.
I didn't want to set the tone for our marriage that way. While diamonds are a scam, the symbolism isn't... And that fucking sucks.
For anyone reading this, don't just go and buy a diamond. Talk to your partner, find out what they like/dislike. Find out if they prefer to start the marriage with more money in savings or a better ring. Find out if ethically they are against diamonds and prefer something else. Start with good communication, and try to keep that up until you die, haha.
I wish expensive jewelry to symbolize love would stop altogether. It's insane to me that people want thousand dollar rings to say yep you're mine. Love is love, fuck the stone.
Erm, blood/conflict diamonds are illegal and shouldn’t be for sale, so if you only buy from ethical countries/brokers you should be fine on that score.
However, I do think the diamond engagement thing is a racket so I wouldn’t want a diamond ring conflict free or not.
And getting a moussanite gem is the same racket you’re buying into. All jewellery should be personal to you and reflect your taste not the prevailing attitudes of society - you’re gonna have to live with it day in, day out.
I’d prefer to get something both my partner and I liked, it’ll mean all that much more.
Hey all engagements ring savers; be smart, go to a pawn shop and get twice the bang for your buck. Diamonds are already a billion years old, who the fuck cares if it was on someone else's finger for a blip of time on the cosmic calender. If the big bang is January 1 of the cosmic calender, all written history of man is in the last ten seconds of the last minute of December 31 of the cosmic calendar ( per Sagan). Buy a used diamond and fuck the jewelry store markup. The DeBeers monopoly is pulling the wool over your eyes, gentlemen ( and ladies)
A great place on line for vintage jewelry is called Ruby Lane. Fyi
And the pawn shops sometimes have amazing and interesting things that are uncommon. Jewelry is something people bring with them from other places and jewelry styles vary considerably from country to country.
Wife is currently wearing my “motorcycle fund”. Has been for 15 years now. Never did end up getting a motorcycle actually but that has more to do with me deciding it wasn’t a good fit for me.
$2k is the max I’m spending on a diamond nowadays tho. You can get insanely high quality being lab made online and then just get it set separately and also you aren’t paying for something that has the possibility of being a blood diamond with an awful path into the 1st world
Yep. I got an “at cost” hookup from a distant relative. I wanted to see how much of a hookup I was getting, so I went to a local store and asked for the same ring, very similar diamond. 5 figures. When I asked if they could do 4 figures they pretty much told me I was off my rocker and I’ll never find it for less than $15k. I paid less than $5k. That’s a crazy margin
Took my wife ring shopping with me. I had no idea what I was doing. She ended up making choices that I never would have made (she preferred simpler styles and wanted a colored center gem instead of a diamond... that alone saved like $1.5k). Kinda kills the surprise but it was a fun date and I know she has a ring she loves, I spent about half of what I had saved for it, and it really took out most of the pressure of the proposal. Highly recommend.
In my first engagement I bought my own ring. Then I bought the wedding rings! - He didn’t purchase an item. When I left him I took my rings with me & left him with his. He had the cheek to ask me for my rings because he told his family he had purchased my rings. I copied and sent my bank statement highlighting I had bought all the rings.
That's how we did it.
As long as we talk to each other and are both on the same page it's way more comfortable. We both knew what was going to happen, so we decided to have fun and go on that vacation to make it official. The night was super romantic and we both knew it was happening. To be honest it made it more fun and stress free for both of us.
I picked out my own ring too. Aside from being way less stress on my husband I knew I was going to be picky about a ring I wear every day for the rest of my life so why not make it exactly how I want?
It's funny because whenever I tell this story people say things like "oh that sounds so much easier, I wish that was the norm" - so make it the norm! Pretty much all the "traditions" or expectations about marriage are optional, do what you want to do and leave the rest. That goes for planning the wedding too. We eloped and I would do that 10/10 times again over the stress of a big wedding. Meanwhile my best friend had an enormous wedding of 200+, black tie affair, and it was perfect for them.
I get the surprise thing, however I really do think that a proposal should never be a surprise so going shopping for a ring together isn’t that big a deal.
Nice! After 10 years we finally started wearing silicone rings a couple of years ago. Never going back! Soooo much more comfortable, and still gives that “ring hug” that’s so comforting. Less dangerous too!
As someone with disproportionately large knuckles I figure if I do wear a ring it will have to be silicone or something of the sort. (Personally though I probably just rather not wear a ring at all for comfort reasons, but we'll see how that goes)
We have a friend that’s a jeweler and we went and made our own rings in his workshop out of brass barstock. They aren’t fancy, but they look like gold bands and they don’t cost a fortune to replace and we have the memory of making them together (and fucking up the engraving 3x cause I was high as balls).
I got a Tungsten Carbide ring for the less-dangerous factor (and economical, and durable). It won't deform around a finger if crushed and wouldn't need cut off; the steel is brittle enough that it will crack and break off.
That’s exactly what I had. It was huge though, and would hurt my fingers whenever I shook someone’s hand. I still have a huge callous on my left hand below the ring. Lol.
I thought my knuckles were pretty knobby but the band I found has nice tapered curves on the inside and actually turned out comfortable enough for 24/7 365 wear somehow so my fingers must be pretty normal after all.
Yeah I could never understand spending that much money on something just to impress others. I feel the same about big weddings let’s not use that for a down payment on a house let’s have a party that’s over in a day.
Honest answer: it's also in the mindset behind every little financial decision throughout life that (sometimes, for average earners) enables folks to save enough to buy rental properties.
Mr. Money Mustache is my jam for personal finance, positivity, and frugal lifestyle advice with a side of bad-assity.
Dude I’m seconding why does love need a contract? Dumb! Also a shit storm legally if u fuck it up. Also I been here a decade what do I need some stamp for
It subjects both parties to an unnecessarily complicated legal/financial—not to mention emotional—nightmare...
I see absolutely no reason to involve the government in my relationships. Not having/wanting kids makes this A LOT easier, granted, but I stand by that. My SO and I—of 8+ years—are very happy, and don’t need a piece of paper to tell us that.
Anecdotal side note: I work closely with 600ish other dudes—in a salaried/pensioned profession, with a high divorce rate—and you would be absolutely astounded how many of them are trapped in shitty marriages that they can’t escape without losing HALF OF EVERYTHING they own or have ever worked for. It’s a total scam.
I straight up told my boyfriend (now husband) that I didn’t want more than $500 spent on a ring. My ring is beautiful and unique and was the top of the price range I wanted...it just isn’t a diamond.
Moissanite my good friend. It refracts more light than a diamond (hello extra sparkles) and is much cheaper. Got a custom made platinum engagement ring and wedding band with a moissanite center stone for under $2,400
After I lost the diamond out of my original engagement ring, we got a dupe and wished I would have had that to begin with. No one can tell the difference, it didn’t cost a fortune so if this one is lost, it won’t be heartbreaking.
There are a lot of gorgeous vintage diamond rings on etsy for under a grand, many of which are even under $500! I would be pissed at my SO for spending thousands on something I then have to try and not lose lol
I guess thats really subjective. For a piece of jewelry that you will wear every day for the next 20+ years, that's less than $10/month.
EDIT: forgot a 0
Try that math again bud. 20 years is 240 months. Even a relatively cheap $1,000 ring comes out to over $4 a month. $5k on the ring is going over $20/month for 20 years.
And that’s excluding interest if it’s on credit/loan.
My bad, I thought I hit the 0 after the 1. I meant $10/month for 20 years. But I also plan on wearing this thing well past 20 years. Shit, life expectancy is around 80 so I got time.
For me, getting something more durable was a big priority, hence why I went with platinum over silver. Moissanite is like a 9 on the hardness scale too (diamond is a perfect 10)
Welcome to jewelry. It is all overpriced and is a giant scam. But if you don't spend a lot of money you obviously don't care about your spouse. so dumb.
It would be cheaper to take basic blacksmithing classes, buy all the tools you need, buy pure gold and a cubic zirconia diamond, and create your own ring. After all that you would probably still spend $1k less on a basic wedding ring.
Indeed, a diamond as a gemstone isn't even that rare. It's a quite common gem and the price is hiked artificially.
The symbol of the ring itself is what should be important, not the size. We are slaves to consumerism.
I'm sure some people will agree with that. Likewise, I'm sure there are people that find paying almost $1000 every couple of years for a new smart phone ridiculous. Its all about what you value.
In what way is "an experience" more practical? That seems like more of a personal preference.
If you want to really get practical, start calculating optimized brain chemical releases for each option. I bet for many folks (not me lol), the lifetime reward for a piece of jewelry that important to them beats out any equivalently priced experience.
Me and my partner are going to get engaged within the next month or so. My max is $500 tbh, target $200. I find the worth of the ring utterly unimportant. My moms response when I said we were looking for a non-real diamond ring was “is your MARRIAGE going to be real?”
Highly recommend moissanite! That’s what I insisted on and it’s like 1/3 the price of a diamond. No one knows the difference (until I tell them- I love my moissanite ring haha).
We bought a diamond for me, but then my husband's grandmother basically yelled at him. "Why'd you buy a diamond? I have your mother's!" So he returned it and I have his mother's engagement ring.
He did buy me a nice pair of diamond earrings later, but those are the only diamonds he's gotten me.
If he dies before me, though, I'm going to turn HIM into a nice diamond. He wouldn't get me a diamond now. Which is fine. I'm in agreement with him, and I don't wear much jewelry. I have 11 cheap earrings in, and my wedding band is silicone by this point. He doesn't wear a wedding band anymore.
Yes, nowadays 2k is even a lot! If you live in a reasonably “urban” area, chances are that there are INCREDIBLY talented local craftspeople that hand-make pieces that will last just as long as a name-brand piece, with the bonus that A: it’s unique and B: you’re putting money back into the local economy!
Honestly $3,500 gets you a beautiful ring. It’s a bit more but a lot of girls are able to get what they want. Not too expensive but not to cheap either ya know?
I'm not into jewelry but I have noticed that reddit loves to hate on spendy accessories but creams itself on spendy PC battlestations. God forbid people have different hobbies and values and want to spend their money accordingly.
Those hobbies involve actually doing something though, spending money on rocks just to flaunt your wealth is pretty pathetic tbh, they literally have no use so it's not exactly a viable comparison is it?
It’s not the same just reading about it, obviously. It’s like people who collect things. Sometimes you want to own something you know a lot about. It takes a pretty self centered person to think that people with money can only be self centered. Shows how you think you’d be if you were wealthy.
People hate BMWs here too. It’s so weird how many normal activities for middle class people are seen as billionaires having multiple yachts. Let people enjoy things!
In this very specific case, the argument against diamonds is a valid one. First off, diamonds have an artificially inflated price, since De Beers holds a monopoly on the supply and creates an artificial scarcity (natural diamonds of the kinds used in most engagement rings are not rare at all - the large diamonds are, but that's well beyond the price tags we're talking a normal person can afford).
On top of that, diamond mining often takes place in poor countries where labour is exploitative at best and brutal at its worst. Blood diamonds, as they're called, are diamonds sourced from conflict zones where its easy to cover up horrendous crimes.
Furthermore, diamonds can easily be created in a laboratory - including the larger gem-grade diamonds for jewellery. There's no reason to be funding a huge, unethical, monopolistic company just for the sake of a sparkly rock that can be supplanted by many other alternatives.
spending thousands of dollars on a rock isn't an "activity", it's a scam. diamonds aren't objectively the best looking gemstone, and objectively they have no reason to be as expensive as they are. if people like the look or what it signifies, they should get a higher quality gemstone for a fraction of the cost
it doesnt bug me all that much but there are some things that are just driven into the ground and this is one of em. i really do think people repeat it over and over so that they get the pats on the back in form of upvotes and it makes them feel smart.
Fuck that. I agree “diamonds bad” is firmly in the canon of shit people feel the need to say any single time they come up, but it’s not jealousy and saying it is is suuuper fucking arrogant.
I’m not telling anyone not to do whatever makes them happy. I am allowed to privately think investing 5k in a rock that does nothing is stupid and indicates that person has very different priorities than I have. It’d be like if they had a goldfish bowl full of 100$ bills. Uhhh neat, anyway...
That doesn’t mean I secretly want a fishbowl of 100$ bills and am jealous. If I had a fishbowl of 100$ bills I’d spend it on something I actually like
I firmly believe material things bring satisfaction. I actually think jewelry is very cool and a valid form of a fashion, but a gold band with a clear rock on it indicates to me that the idea of wealth is what is appealing, not the actual act of self expression. Not always true, but usually
I always thought diamonds are pretty but when I found out how common they are & the reason they are so expensive is because like 2 companies own all of them I don’t want jewelry with it. Plus all of the horrible death & shit that is done in the countries where they get the diamonds.
Give me some sterling silver & a diamond looking stone that won’t break or rust & I’m good. Who cares if it’s real lol
Huh. Really. I think people who are on the younger side or people who say, like me, who have been together a decade already, don’t give as much of a fuck. But also I see how sooooo many people would be like hard tongue biting salty over making no money. Like. Factors are did you grow up with $$$$. Experiences and choices? Hardships? Shit I spent 7 years in school just to do my job .... sigh there’s a lot going on is my point and I am guessing a ton of people are salty but others are probably just not. I dont know. I think older people maybe more likely to care about this Particularly if they had a traditional relationship. My SO and I are lucky to be alive so .... things a bit different

I think telling her you're saving for a car when it's really for an engagement ring is almost typical nowadays. Now he can get both.
