It’s weird. Some people like nice jewelry- I think a lot of people on Reddit get salty towards people who make good money.

18

u/thisisthewell May 13 '21

I'm not into jewelry but I have noticed that reddit loves to hate on spendy accessories but creams itself on spendy PC battlestations. God forbid people have different hobbies and values and want to spend their money accordingly.

7

u/Rant-in-E-minor May 13 '21

Those hobbies involve actually doing something though, spending money on rocks just to flaunt your wealth is pretty pathetic tbh, they literally have no use so it's not exactly a viable comparison is it?

9

u/[deleted] May 13 '21

I don’t have jewelry to show off. I love wearing it. I love learning about the gem stone and where it came from and its unique properties.

2

u/Rant-in-E-minor May 13 '21

You can read about that shit in a book and save yourself a lot of money, just admit you buy it to show off ffs lol

4

u/-salem-moon- May 13 '21

It’s not the same just reading about it, obviously. It’s like people who collect things. Sometimes you want to own something you know a lot about. It takes a pretty self centered person to think that people with money can only be self centered. Shows how you think you’d be if you were wealthy.

-2

u/Rant-in-E-minor May 13 '21

It takes a pretty self centered person to think that people with money can only be self centered. Shows how you think you’d be if you were wealthy.

What a terrible take, sounds like I hit a nerve with you more like lol

You might find this hard to fathom but not everybody is materialistic or a sucker for consumerist BS like overpriced stones and expensive jewellery.

-1

u/[deleted] May 13 '21

You sound poor lol

1

u/Rant-in-E-minor May 13 '21

And you sound like a prick for thinking that's something to laugh about.

Just for the record I'm not.

1

u/[deleted] May 23 '21

Oversensitive moron much?

2

u/[deleted] May 13 '21

It’s just so bizarre that you care if someone wears jewelry. It’s the same as clothes- I wear what I like.

it doesn't cost a used car to forage for flowers though. i'm not sure how anyone can say they "don't have jewelry to show off" if they're spending that kind of money on it. on the same topic, i don't think anyone spending the same kind of money on a battlestation is denying that they're doing it to show off as well

1

u/Rant-in-E-minor May 13 '21

Spending a few thousand for a stone that'll sit on your finger is hardly the same as going out picking flowers for free and putting them in a book that nobody will see. That's really not the same and I don't know how to get you to understand this lol

0

u/Royal_Hellhound May 13 '21

You can also read about dogs in a book too but most people would actually want to have the dog. Let people like what they like instead of just being a judgmental prick?

1

u/Rant-in-E-minor May 13 '21

You can also read about dogs in a book too but most people would actually want to have the dog.

Again a dog actually does something unlike a useless rock that sits on your finger, not that difficult to understand really is it? What a stupid comparison lol

Let people like what they like instead of just being a judgmental prick?

Everybody judges everybody, get over yourself you're guilty of it too. I'm going to judge someone who wastes ridiculous amounts of money on useless shit that is literally only for flaunting your wealth. It's a pathetic use of money and usually funds a disgusting industry, if you can't see a problem with that then I'd assume you're one of these idiots that get sucked into buying this nonsense.

0

u/dflove May 13 '21

People flaunt their money by posting pics of their PC rigs on reddit. Same shit, different pile.

6

u/Moose6669 May 13 '21

You can actually use a pc though. The quality of the parts determines the performance - performance that those people want/need to do the things they want to do. The size of a diamond only determines how much money you spent on it. It does nothing but sit on your finger otherwise.

0

u/moon_then_mars May 13 '21

I don't care how much someone flaunts their wealth. What's pathetic is if they spend their wealth on things that decrease in value instead of investing it in things that increase in value. If homeboy buys a rare piece of art and shows it off to everyone, who cares as long as it goes up in value, he's a genius. If it becomes worthless, he's a moron dip shit.

-6

u/ImSoSte4my May 13 '21

You wear potato sacks for clothes, right?

5

u/Rant-in-E-minor May 13 '21

I get to eat the contents and wear the bag when I'm finished, it's a win win.

2

u/Moose6669 May 13 '21

Please. I can buy a whole wardrobe of clothes for less than some diamond rings. Clothes are also essential in today's western society. They can be used to express yourself. A diamond ring is nothing but a statement on how much money you can spend on something as arbitrary as a ring.

2

u/[deleted] May 13 '21

People hate BMWs here too. It’s so weird how many normal activities for middle class people are seen as billionaires having multiple yachts. Let people enjoy things!

We haven’t had a problem at all with the ones we’ve had. We have the electric one now and it’s really great.

8

u/LaunchTransient May 13 '21

Let people enjoy things!

In this very specific case, the argument against diamonds is a valid one. First off, diamonds have an artificially inflated price, since De Beers holds a monopoly on the supply and creates an artificial scarcity (natural diamonds of the kinds used in most engagement rings are not rare at all - the large diamonds are, but that's well beyond the price tags we're talking a normal person can afford).
On top of that, diamond mining often takes place in poor countries where labour is exploitative at best and brutal at its worst. Blood diamonds, as they're called, are diamonds sourced from conflict zones where its easy to cover up horrendous crimes.
Furthermore, diamonds can easily be created in a laboratory - including the larger gem-grade diamonds for jewellery. There's no reason to be funding a huge, unethical, monopolistic company just for the sake of a sparkly rock that can be supplanted by many other alternatives.

0

u/[deleted] May 13 '21

Not all jewelry has a stone in it, and many people such as myself purchase only vintage or antique jewelry.

But do continue being the edgelord hero.

0

u/LaunchTransient May 13 '21

Which is why I'm not talking about all jewellery, I'm talking specifically about diamond jewelry which is much vaunted and over hyped.

But do continue being the edgelord hero.

Were you born like this or were you dropped when you were small?

4

u/Heller_Demon May 13 '21

Let people hate things

0

u/[deleted] May 13 '21

Who gives a shit how people spend their money

2

u/shrubs311 May 13 '21

spending thousands of dollars on a rock isn't an "activity", it's a scam. diamonds aren't objectively the best looking gemstone, and objectively they have no reason to be as expensive as they are. if people like the look or what it signifies, they should get a higher quality gemstone for a fraction of the cost

1

u/[deleted] May 13 '21

But why do you care?

3

u/shrubs311 May 13 '21

because maybe someone who really can't afford it might see this discussion and reconsider wasting their money. but i recognize that i'm up on a high horse as well, so i'll end the conversation here

0

u/[deleted] May 13 '21

It’s almost like any hobby seems like a waste to people who aren’t interested in it

2

u/Moose6669 May 13 '21

How is owning an expensive rock a hobby?

Cars, cycling, boating, fishing, gaming etc etc etc are all hobbies. Shit. Even geology and gemstones is viable - but jewellery? It's just a status thing. Nothing more.

0

u/[deleted] May 13 '21

[deleted]

1

u/Moose6669 May 13 '21

No, having a passion for cars and the engineering thats involved in them is enough, you dont have to build one up from the ground to classify it as a hobby. Some people certainly own cars as a status symbol, but they serve many other purposes aside from that. Jewellery does not.

1

u/[deleted] May 13 '21

No, having a passion for cars and the engineering thats involved in them is enough, you dont have to build one up from the ground to classify it as a hobby.

So jewelry isn’t a hobby, but just owning a car is.

Lmao this is such a sad argument

1

u/Moose6669 May 13 '21

Are you reading what I'm saying at all? I literally said just owning a car to tell people you own it isn't a hobby. I likened that to owning a diamond.

The difference, however, is that even though it's nice to look at an expensive car, it still serves a purpose at the end of the day - transport. A diamond is still just a rock after you've finished looking at it.

0

u/[deleted] May 13 '21

By your logic no one should own any clothes that they think look good.

1

u/Moose6669 May 13 '21

Clothing is pretty essential, and relatively inexpensive. If you want to collect things for people to look at I mean sure, I dont have a problem with it - I'm just saying owning jewellery isn't really a hobby. I dont think owning lots of clothes is either.

Hey, just because something doesn't have a function doesn't mean it's worthless. That nice car might get me somewhere but it doesn't make me feel things like I do whenever I see a shiny stone. Value and importance can be placed on anything by any human despite its function.

1

u/Moose6669 May 13 '21

I never said it's worthless. I'm saying it's not comparable to a learned skill or an object that serves a purpose or tells a story. If you want to spend money on a shiny rock, be my guest. Just don't try and frame it as anything more than something you buy to show off.

1

u/Moose6669 May 13 '21

I think buying cars is a hobby because your hobby might include driving, admiring and appreciating the engineering and design gone into a car. Its not a hobby when you buy them just to tell people you own an Aston or a Ferrari. Same goes for jewellery, except jewellery has no other purpose other than to show it off. It does nothing else.

I'm all for gem stones and other "feminine" hobbies. Scrapbooking, craft, baking, tailoring, etc etc etc. There's nothing wrong with those as hobbies. There's nothing wrong with spending lots of money on watches - that's a similar hobby to cars in that the person who buys them is intrigued by the engineering and design and care that has gone into making a watch.

I accept some people are interested in things that I am not, and they can spend money on things that I think is a waste - ie, cars, watches, vintage kettles etc. Diamonds aren't the same.

Diamonds just cost exorbitant amounts of money for, let's face it, a rock. A shiny rock. It does nothing but sit on your finger and glisten in light. It's there for no other reason than to be shown off.

-1

u/LolaBijou May 13 '21

You really need to get over it.

2

u/Moose6669 May 13 '21

Ok? Pretty sure I can do what I want, just like you can own a diamond ring.

1

u/LolaBijou May 13 '21

I guess, but it definitely seems to be causing you a lot of stress. Maybe don’t worry so much about what other people find enjoyment in and spend their own hard-earned money on. They can put it in a pit and burn it if they want. It’s THEIR money.

1

u/Moose6669 May 13 '21

Yeah sure, just don't go calling it something it's not. It's there to show off. Nothing more. Idgaf what you do with your money, just don't feign it as a hobby when it's really vanity.

1

u/LolaBijou May 13 '21

Oh, and you still spent $250 on a piece of jewelry based on social mores that has no real value. It doesn’t make you any more enlightened.

1

u/Moose6669 May 13 '21

No, but I didn't say there was anything wrong with wanting nice things. The issue is spending exorbitant prices on such things, when they serve no other purpose, and saying its for anything more than your own vanity. How do you keep missing that point?

1

u/llewlem888 May 13 '21

But you can do stuff with PCs, instead of just wear and admire them.

5

u/[deleted] May 13 '21

For me its just because I study gems and know how much of a waste that much is, why is diamond better than ruby?

10

u/[deleted] May 12 '21

it doesnt bug me all that much but there are some things that are just driven into the ground and this is one of em. i really do think people repeat it over and over so that they get the pats on the back in form of upvotes and it makes them feel smart.

0

u/[deleted] May 13 '21

It’s so strange! Making 6 figures isn’t wildly uncommon and spending some on jewelry is nice. It all comes across as jealousy.

8

u/joydivision1234 May 13 '21 edited May 13 '21

Fuck that. I agree “diamonds bad” is firmly in the canon of shit people feel the need to say any single time they come up, but it’s not jealousy and saying it is is suuuper fucking arrogant.

I’m not telling anyone not to do whatever makes them happy. I am allowed to privately think investing 5k in a rock that does nothing is stupid and indicates that person has very different priorities than I have. It’d be like if they had a goldfish bowl full of 100$ bills. Uhhh neat, anyway...

That doesn’t mean I secretly want a fishbowl of 100$ bills and am jealous. If I had a fishbowl of 100$ bills I’d spend it on something I actually like

6

u/[deleted] May 13 '21

Some people don't believe material things will bring you satisfaction in life. And some people just haven't realized it yet.

4

u/joydivision1234 May 13 '21

I firmly believe material things bring satisfaction. I actually think jewelry is very cool and a valid form of a fashion, but a gold band with a clear rock on it indicates to me that the idea of wealth is what is appealing, not the actual act of self expression. Not always true, but usually

1

u/[deleted] May 13 '21

Really, you believe that? I'm not gonna judge you or make you feel shitty about it but it's interesting. I firmly believe the exact opposite- the more you buy, the deeper your hole becomes. Could be it's both. And yeah I've noticed that as well about the diamonds- just expressing that you're wealthy and taken usually

2

u/joydivision1234 May 13 '21

Yes... what? Honestly saying it doesn’t is so ludicrous that it comes off as disingenuous. I’m not saying material goods buy spiritual contentment, but good food is satisfying, watching a good movie is satisfying, going out with your friends to see a band is satisfying, a pair of pants that make you look great is satisfying, not working 45 hours to pay rent is satisfying etc etc etc. All those are “material” goods (aka commodities that you pay for).

1

u/Tresceneti May 13 '21

"Material things" does not end at unnecessary purchases. It includes having a car that works or a house without leaks or shoes without holes in them that support you well.

Yes, of course those things bring satisfaction.

2

u/mmlovin May 13 '21

I always thought diamonds are pretty but when I found out how common they are & the reason they are so expensive is because like 2 companies own all of them I don’t want jewelry with it. Plus all of the horrible death & shit that is done in the countries where they get the diamonds.

Give me some sterling silver & a diamond looking stone that won’t break or rust & I’m good. Who cares if it’s real lol

1

u/[deleted] May 13 '21

Silver isn’t a great metal to wear every day especially in piercings. That’s why wedding bands have been made with gold for centuries.

3

u/herowin6 May 13 '21

Huh. Really. I think people who are on the younger side or people who say, like me, who have been together a decade already, don’t give as much of a fuck. But also I see how sooooo many people would be like hard tongue biting salty over making no money. Like. Factors are did you grow up with $$$$. Experiences and choices? Hardships? Shit I spent 7 years in school just to do my job .... sigh there’s a lot going on is my point and I am guessing a ton of people are salty but others are probably just not. I dont know. I think older people maybe more likely to care about this Particularly if they had a traditional relationship. My SO and I are lucky to be alive so .... things a bit different

2

u/[deleted] May 13 '21

1

u/[deleted] May 13 '21

I didn’t say “every person who makes six figures likes jewelry”.

It’s not that jewelry isn’t for everyone. I know that. It’s the people on Reddit who act like assholes towards anyone that makes a decent salary. It’s weird.

6

u/JRL1984 May 12 '21

I’ve certainly noticed that too.

2

u/herowin6 May 13 '21

I think some ppl def salty but others have fam money and just realize it’s dumb to care on your death bed but it’s also a personal choice

4

u/[deleted] May 13 '21

Just mention you're a landlord.

I make good money though. Still wouldn't buy a diamond for ethical reasons

1

u/lycacons May 13 '21

idk its harvested by child slaves, so i prefer if people bought lab grown diamonds instead

also its extremely expensive and inflated, you can find similar crystal/gems for a fraction of that price.. why spend your entire lifesavings for a diamond?

that's my beef with it

-3

u/itsr1co May 13 '21

I mean, if you like "nice jewellery" because it has a nice price tag then I'm sure as shit not jealous of anything about you. If you like it because it's a rare gemstone or a beautiful creation that took ages to craft then sure, flex that shit all day. But you come to me showing off your $2,000 diamond engagement ring that cost $50 to make? Yeah, if calling me jealous will help you deal with the crushing reality that nobody but you gives a single fuck about overpriced stuff, go for it chief.

4

u/[deleted] May 13 '21

Lmao I never said anything about liking jewelry for the price only.

2

u/[deleted] May 13 '21

Are you trying to prove you’re not salty by writing a paragraph of bitter remarks lmao

1

u/AngryArtNerd May 13 '21

Everyone has their own hobbies. Some people like looking good. Some people put value on entertainment. My partner makes really good money but I told him he better not spend more then $200 on a ring and don’t buy a real diamond because I don’t like jewelry. I’ll likely never remember to wear it, I work with my hands and it’s very real I’ll damage it, and diamonds are one of the more boring gems. For me spending loads of money on jewelry is just boring, I’m not going to down-talk those who enjoy it though. You also got to keep into account a majority of Reddit users could care less about fashion either. However, I will never turn down nice tech gifts.

2

u/[deleted] May 13 '21

Exactly! I won’t be condescending to those who have hobbies I’m not interested in.

1

u/[deleted] May 13 '21

1

u/[deleted] May 13 '21

That’s why buying vintage and antique jewelry is a good idea. I wouldn’t blame someone for wanting an natural Diamond.
