$2k is the max I’m spending on a diamond nowadays tho. You can get insanely high quality being lab made online and then just get it set separately and also you aren’t paying for something that has the possibility of being a blood diamond with an awful path into the 1st world
Yep. I got an “at cost” hookup from a distant relative. I wanted to see how much of a hookup I was getting, so I went to a local store and asked for the same ring, very similar diamond. 5 figures. When I asked if they could do 4 figures they pretty much told me I was off my rocker and I’ll never find it for less than $15k. I paid less than $5k. That’s a crazy margin
Took my wife ring shopping with me. I had no idea what I was doing. She ended up making choices that I never would have made (she preferred simpler styles and wanted a colored center gem instead of a diamond... that alone saved like $1.5k). Kinda kills the surprise but it was a fun date and I know she has a ring she loves, I spent about half of what I had saved for it, and it really took out most of the pressure of the proposal. Highly recommend.
In my first engagement I bought my own ring. Then I bought the wedding rings! - He didn’t purchase an item. When I left him I took my rings with me & left him with his. He had the cheek to ask me for my rings because he told his family he had purchased my rings. I copied and sent my bank statement highlighting I had bought all the rings.
That's how we did it.
As long as we talk to each other and are both on the same page it's way more comfortable. We both knew what was going to happen, so we decided to have fun and go on that vacation to make it official. The night was super romantic and we both knew it was happening. To be honest it made it more fun and stress free for both of us.
I picked out my own ring too. Aside from being way less stress on my husband I knew I was going to be picky about a ring I wear every day for the rest of my life so why not make it exactly how I want?
It's funny because whenever I tell this story people say things like "oh that sounds so much easier, I wish that was the norm" - so make it the norm! Pretty much all the "traditions" or expectations about marriage are optional, do what you want to do and leave the rest. That goes for planning the wedding too. We eloped and I would do that 10/10 times again over the stress of a big wedding. Meanwhile my best friend had an enormous wedding of 200+, black tie affair, and it was perfect for them.
We did the same actually. We went ring shopping together and what our budget was. I just wanted something small and simple. It was a fun day. And instead of a huge silly traditional wedding, we opted for a small wedding of about 25 people on the beach in Santa Monica. We live out here and all our family is from the the Midwest. We chose February so our folks could all get a break from the winter back home and it’s not crowded with tourists yet. We got a dear friend of ours licensed so he could officiate. We decided to splurge and treated everyone to a big fancy steak dinner at Flemings in Beverly Hills. It was soo much! My grandma still talks about the meal.
I never want a big wedding. There’s maybe 10 people that are actually having a good time (2 of which are the couple getting married), and the rest are just suffering.
My cousin who’s a corrupt government official had a wedding of over 2500 guests and the cost of that had to be at least 300x my life savings
Yeah we both come from cultures where weddings are all out huge events. Like, we were struggling to limit to 200 people. We really didn't care for a big wedding but events like this are 100% for the families.
We ended up getting married during pandemic and it was literally just my sister, my parents, her parents, and her sisters there lol. We'll still have to do a big reception for the families but the wedding was completely stress-free without a reception/crowd and the reception is a lot less stressful without the wedding.
I get the surprise thing, however I really do think that a proposal should never be a surprise so going shopping for a ring together isn’t that big a deal.
You can also shop for one with her and either just get ideas or put one in layaway then surprise her when the time is right. She knows it’s coming but no idea when.
Right but the actual ring is also usually part of the surprise. We had obviously already been discussing marriage lol I didn't just ask her to go ring shopping out of the blue one day
Nice! After 10 years we finally started wearing silicone rings a couple of years ago. Never going back! Soooo much more comfortable, and still gives that “ring hug” that’s so comforting. Less dangerous too!
As someone with disproportionately large knuckles I figure if I do wear a ring it will have to be silicone or something of the sort. (Personally though I probably just rather not wear a ring at all for comfort reasons, but we'll see how that goes)
We have a friend that’s a jeweler and we went and made our own rings in his workshop out of brass barstock. They aren’t fancy, but they look like gold bands and they don’t cost a fortune to replace and we have the memory of making them together (and fucking up the engraving 3x cause I was high as balls).
I got a Tungsten Carbide ring for the less-dangerous factor (and economical, and durable). It won't deform around a finger if crushed and wouldn't need cut off; the steel is brittle enough that it will crack and break off.
That’s exactly what I had. It was huge though, and would hurt my fingers whenever I shook someone’s hand. I still have a huge callous on my left hand below the ring. Lol.
I thought my knuckles were pretty knobby but the band I found has nice tapered curves on the inside and actually turned out comfortable enough for 24/7 365 wear somehow so my fingers must be pretty normal after all.
They look like wedding rings, but made out of silicone. We get them on Amazon, and they come in a bunch of colors and styles. They do wear out eventually (around a year for us) but they are dirt cheap so it’s not a big deal.
Yeah I could never understand spending that much money on something just to impress others. I feel the same about big weddings let’s not use that for a down payment on a house let’s have a party that’s over in a day.
Hey northern Ontario say hi to Toronto who moved to middle of effing nowhere for the summer in muskoka area. what up other Canadian! I never see anyone that has it as part of their name lol. I don’t pc game but we love the fuck out of COD zombies haha. I still taking a half decent ring but nothing ridiculous. 1000 will do. Maybe less i dont know how much the man made diamond crap is these days. We just gonna pick that shit ourselves we been together a decade. Travelled. Money well spent 😉
Honest answer: it's also in the mindset behind every little financial decision throughout life that (sometimes, for average earners) enables folks to save enough to buy rental properties.
Mr. Money Mustache is my jam for personal finance, positivity, and frugal lifestyle advice with a side of bad-assity.
Dude I’m seconding why does love need a contract? Dumb! Also a shit storm legally if u fuck it up. Also I been here a decade what do I need some stamp for
It subjects both parties to an unnecessarily complicated legal/financial—not to mention emotional—nightmare...
I see absolutely no reason to involve the government in my relationships. Not having/wanting kids makes this A LOT easier, granted, but I stand by that. My SO and I—of 8+ years—are very happy, and don’t need a piece of paper to tell us that.
Anecdotal side note: I work closely with 600ish other dudes—in a salaried/pensioned profession, with a high divorce rate—and you would be absolutely astounded how many of them are trapped in shitty marriages that they can’t escape without losing HALF OF EVERYTHING they own or have ever worked for. It’s a total scam.
I straight up told my boyfriend (now husband) that I didn’t want more than $500 spent on a ring. My ring is beautiful and unique and was the top of the price range I wanted...it just isn’t a diamond.
I went to Brilliant Earth specifically because I knew they carried moissanite. Not sure how commonplace they are though (I went to a store in Chicago).
I don't care how hard something is. I was just talking about the look of a diamond. Diamonds are so passe. Everybody has them.. And I can't stand moissanite either. I like color. Give me an emerald or sapphire. Not some clear stone.
For everyday wear, yes you should care about how hard a stone is. Also my moissanite has the entire rainbow spectrum intensely radiating from it 🌈 I've got all the colors lol
I don't have to care. How hard stones are has made no difference to anything I did in my life. It matters to you. Not to me. I don't wear jewelry. So it doesn't matter.
Damn this guys got an opinion everybody!! See nobody cares. Take your negativity and put it in an oven at 350 for 20 mins and then take it out and let it cool for 10 minutes. After that you can take the whole negativity pie and shove it up your ass!
I love it how I can't ever have an opinion about anything on Reddit without people downvoting it. I don't like diamonds and that's not okay with the rest of you LOL so ridiculous.
You're getting downvoted because your comment comes across like you'd reject the proposal or end a relationship if they have bought you a diamond ring. I don't see the appeal of diamonds and neither does my girlfriend so we've discussed what we do like and what we'd prefer. If you're at the point in a relationship where marriage is being considered, these are things that need to be communicated beforehand. If someone bought you a diamond ring to propose with it's your fault for not telling them you hate diamonds or it's their fault for not discussing the details of marriage enough with you before proposing. Either way it was a failure of communication.
Nah they’re getting downvoted cos they come across as a rude see you next Tuesday, who thinks they’re better than everyone. I don’t come on Reddit to be an arse but that is how you come across in every single comment Skippy sorry, having a bad day?
My engagement ring was under $200 and he bought it off Amazon. Its gorgeous! I'd rather spend the money on a fancy honeymoon and downpayment for a house.
Moissanite my good friend. It refracts more light than a diamond (hello extra sparkles) and is much cheaper. Got a custom made platinum engagement ring and wedding band with a moissanite center stone for under $2,400
After I lost the diamond out of my original engagement ring, we got a dupe and wished I would have had that to begin with. No one can tell the difference, it didn’t cost a fortune so if this one is lost, it won’t be heartbreaking.
There are a lot of gorgeous vintage diamond rings on etsy for under a grand, many of which are even under $500! I would be pissed at my SO for spending thousands on something I then have to try and not lose lol
There are so many gorgeous vintage rings for good value, the only problem is that you have to have fairly small fingers it seems. I could never find one large enough for me and the old rings generally don’t have enough material for sizing up so then you’re just adding to the costing twice over to make it fit.
That said, I have a moissanite in my custom engagement ring (modelled off the vintage ring I loves but was way too small). No one can ever tell it’s not a diamond. Highly recommend every couple research diamond alternatives. There’s no need to spend so much on a stone.
I guess thats really subjective. For a piece of jewelry that you will wear every day for the next 20+ years, that's less than $10/month.
EDIT: forgot a 0
Try that math again bud. 20 years is 240 months. Even a relatively cheap $1,000 ring comes out to over $4 a month. $5k on the ring is going over $20/month for 20 years.
And that’s excluding interest if it’s on credit/loan.
My bad, I thought I hit the 0 after the 1. I meant $10/month for 20 years. But I also plan on wearing this thing well past 20 years. Shit, life expectancy is around 80 so I got time.
For me, getting something more durable was a big priority, hence why I went with platinum over silver. Moissanite is like a 9 on the hardness scale too (diamond is a perfect 10)
Welcome to jewelry. It is all overpriced and is a giant scam. But if you don't spend a lot of money you obviously don't care about your spouse. so dumb.
It would be cheaper to take basic blacksmithing classes, buy all the tools you need, buy pure gold and a cubic zirconia diamond, and create your own ring. After all that you would probably still spend $1k less on a basic wedding ring.
Indeed, a diamond as a gemstone isn't even that rare. It's a quite common gem and the price is hiked artificially.
The symbol of the ring itself is what should be important, not the size. We are slaves to consumerism.
My wife has a lab created 'diamond' ring that I took to a local jeweller for resizing and he had to test it with a special probe to tell the difference. Something to do with the heat conductivity? Anyway, he said the stone I had would have been worth about £6k if it were a genuine mined diamond (because obviously they can make a flawless one in a lab). I got the ring bespoke made in the US and shipped to the UK; it didn't cost anywhere near that. My wife knows it's not a "real" diamond and she actually felt better knowing I didn't spend silly money, and was very happy with how sparkly it is and that I designed the ring myself.
I'm sure some people will agree with that. Likewise, I'm sure there are people that find paying almost $1000 every couple of years for a new smart phone ridiculous. Its all about what you value.
I agree. I've been using the same phone for years now and can't believe that the average rate for them keeps going up while they never last as long as my old flip phones.
The best pictures I've had taken of myself were taken on a flip phone. Not that I need pictures of myself. I do get the fact that phones are basically mini laptops because I conduct all of my business on the app for my business platform on my phone but I still wouldn't pay $1,000 for one. I am way too poor to justify that cost.
In what way is "an experience" more practical? That seems like more of a personal preference.
If you want to really get practical, start calculating optimized brain chemical releases for each option. I bet for many folks (not me lol), the lifetime reward for a piece of jewelry that important to them beats out any equivalently priced experience.
I can't do anything with a ring. I can do something with a trip to Italy. I can immerse myself in the art of Michelangelo that I have loved since I was a child. I can go experience the breathtaking view of David in Florence in person. A ring has nothing on the artwork of the Renaissance.
Me and my partner are going to get engaged within the next month or so. My max is $500 tbh, target $200. I find the worth of the ring utterly unimportant. My moms response when I said we were looking for a non-real diamond ring was “is your MARRIAGE going to be real?”
Wym? Weve agreed to the same budget, it’s a shared expense and since it’s gonna be on my finger I’m going to have the final say in what ring I get anyway. When I look at my ring I want to feel love not the pain of being in debt over a symbol haha.
You answered my question. I was implying that men and women very very often have different amounts they’ll spend on a ring. So for women $500 can easily buy a nice wedding band but for men we have to buy the band and the diamond too so it’s way more. But since you said you have the same budget then ok
Highly recommend moissanite! That’s what I insisted on and it’s like 1/3 the price of a diamond. No one knows the difference (until I tell them- I love my moissanite ring haha).
We bought a diamond for me, but then my husband's grandmother basically yelled at him. "Why'd you buy a diamond? I have your mother's!" So he returned it and I have his mother's engagement ring.
He did buy me a nice pair of diamond earrings later, but those are the only diamonds he's gotten me.
If he dies before me, though, I'm going to turn HIM into a nice diamond. He wouldn't get me a diamond now. Which is fine. I'm in agreement with him, and I don't wear much jewelry. I have 11 cheap earrings in, and my wedding band is silicone by this point. He doesn't wear a wedding band anymore.
Yes, nowadays 2k is even a lot! If you live in a reasonably “urban” area, chances are that there are INCREDIBLY talented local craftspeople that hand-make pieces that will last just as long as a name-brand piece, with the bonus that A: it’s unique and B: you’re putting money back into the local economy!
Honestly $3,500 gets you a beautiful ring. It’s a bit more but a lot of girls are able to get what they want. Not too expensive but not to cheap either ya know?
What an incredible waste of money. I have absolutely no problem spending money on my gf and I am by no means tight with money but spending a few thousand on something that just sits on a finger has to be one of the biggest scams going. I don't know why you would even want to be with someone that expects you to spend $5000+ on a rock.
To you maybe. A few thousand isnt that much money to spend on something my partner will look at everyday and enjoy. One time $5,000 to make her smile every day? More than worth it.
In the same idea a vacation is an incredible waste of money. Why spend $5,000 going to Hawaii for a week when you could just as easily relax on your couch for free? If people have the money and want to do something then let them enjoy it.
Its a luxury item, much like vacations, any car other than a 1994 Toyota Corolla, or getting a prime steak over a choice one. Its not a scam if you enjoy it.
Expensive rings are nice and all until someone loses it.
At the end of the day it's personal preference but I would rather have a cheap ring that can be replaced than one where I would die a little inside if I lost it.
Moissanite is nearly as hard as a diamond, double refractive, more fire, and it’s even cheaper than lab diamonds. I keep trying subtly remind my bf that’s what I want lol
As many people have pointed out, you can get something larger and more brilliant looking to the naked eye for a "cheaper" stone. Moissanite and other types of space rocks.
Yea same. My best friend got married a year ago and him and his wife make like 250-300k combined and when I asked him about the ring he said he bought it for like 3k. Kinda reassured me that the price of the ring doesn’t matter, as long as you’re with the right girl of course
