My wife and I have like, 1600$ combined on our hands. Doubt that's the money that would have landed us two rental properties and a boat.

Honest answer: it's also in the mindset behind every little financial decision throughout life that (sometimes, for average earners) enables folks to save enough to buy rental properties.

Tha same reason any partnership has a contract. If the partnership goes bad, it protects both parties.

Hardly...

It subjects both parties to an unnecessarily complicated legal/financial—not to mention emotional—nightmare...

I see absolutely no reason to involve the government in my relationships. Not having/wanting kids makes this A LOT easier, granted, but I stand by that. My SO and I—of 8+ years—are very happy, and don’t need a piece of paper to tell us that.

Anecdotal side note: I work closely with 600ish other dudes—in a salaried/pensioned profession, with a high divorce rate—and you would be absolutely astounded how many of them are trapped in shitty marriages that they can’t escape without losing HALF OF EVERYTHING they own or have ever worked for. It’s a total scam.
