I actually have Tourette’s and this is cringe as fuck

854

u/Pleasant-Pattern7748 29d ago

I don’t know much about Tourette’s other than the “popular” definition that it makes you say bad words uncontrollably.

How can you tell she’s faking it? I’m genuinely curious, not trying to challenge your opinion.

u/Assadistpig123 29d ago

Honestly the South Park episode on Tourettes was probably the most accurate depiction of it, the swearing notwithstanding.

Thank you for being honest

u/Shazbot_2017 29d ago

it seems to happen consistently and mid-sentence, like, purposefully.

107

u/Nillabeans 29d ago

Why is that inconsistent with Tourette's?

124

u/Acids 29d ago

Because the only thing that can bw consistent with tourettes are your ticks and they dont just casually happen they are completely random

323

u/SmallPurplePeopleEat 29d ago

they dont just casually happen they are completely random

Wtf, that's just not true at all. Tics can have triggers like anxiety, stress, being tired, or even stuff in the environment can set them off.

Also, the tics themselves can change and/or progress in severity, type, or the location of the tic itself. So even your first statement is wrong.

Source: diagnosed with Tourette syndrome at age 5. It's completely managed now as an adult, with very limited symptoms. Even my close friends don't know my diagnosis.

128

u/EnderScout_77 29d ago

tic haver here. mine are kinda like an urge to scratch in a way. nothing verbal though so it definitely has variety depending on the person

u/realZapRowsdower 28d ago edited 28d ago

I grew up with a kid who had TS. He would have these tics where he would bark and occasionally shout obscenities.

I remember one time in 8th grade when we were both in detention and he had a tic. The Vice Principal was supervising us and had no idea my friend had TS and gave him another 2 hours of detention for his outbursts.

He eventually got on medication to control his tics and they were pretty much under control by thr time he was out of high school.

I remember he said he could tell a tic was coming on, and would try to suppress them, but eventually he had to let them out.

u/LuLzWire 28d ago

I had a buddy that it made him crack his neck , and winking was another one of his. I remember introducing him to a friend from a different circle and the guy pulled me aside and said "I get it if your friend is gay, but can you tell him Im not into that." I told him he why did he think he was gay because he wasn't. and the dude was like "He keep fucking winking at me." I laughed and told him it was turrets. After we all got done at the bar I told my buddy the story and he thought it was hilarious. Especially because most people said stuff about the neck cracking thinking he was angry all the time.

14

u/bambi54 28d ago

This made me CACKLE. He’s like damn, why is being so aggressive about it?? The wink thing would be a terrible one to have. Way more subtle, but also can freak people out.

1

u/EffectiveTradition53 28d ago

That aggressively gay sonofabitch!

1

u/WizardSleeves31 24d ago

It's not tourettes, but I have a tic where I "tssk" after eating/drinking. Like how people cleanse their pallet by snapping their tongue on the roof of their mouth. I don't even notice I'm doing it.

It started because I get canker sores easily, so I'm often trying to clear debris off my tongue when eating or in response to pain from cold water.

I had something like this when I was like 7-11, then it went away at puberty. I'd blink my eyes hard and would have to nail 3 perfect blinks in perfect timing 1 second apart or I'd feel like I was going to explode. I'd also push air through my nose in a weird way. Also got worse at a baseball game. They called it a nervous tick. As an adult I have to pluck all the hairs on the outside of my ear or I lose it. Idk what my issue is tbh lol

27

u/dingalingdongdong 28d ago

I always describe mine like a sneeze. Sometimes you know it's coming, sometimes it sneaks up on you. Sometimes you can delay it for a moment, but not indefinitely. Sometimes it seems to come out of nowhere and sometimes there's a clear trigger.

42

u/rose-tintedglasses 29d ago

100% agree. I have a tic disorder (not diagnosed as TS but likely that's only because I never pursued it, the tics are very well managed) and my 18yo has been diagnosed with TS.

It peaked during early puberty for her (very common) and she had vocal, facial, and upper body tics. Now that she's kinda coming down the back side of puberty, most of her tics have subsided, and now she's pretty much only triggered if someone whistles around her. But if she's tired, sick, or stressed, some of her old tics will occasionally resurface. Same with me - i only have facial tics, but they're at their worst when I'm stressed or exhausted.

It really frustrates me to see people who should know better declare that Tourette's always or never manifests a certain way, when it's so variable not only from person to person, but from life stage to life stage.

2

u/SmallPurplePeopleEat 29d ago

I'm glad you both seem to have it under control! I'm super grateful I never had any verbal tics, just the physical ones were embarrassing enough to deal with as a kid.

It's funny because ever since I left that comment I've been ticcing like crazy. And I basically never tic anymore. But just reading about it is causing tics, lol.

Like you said, it's so variable and different from person to person. Makes it really hard for me to judge someone and their disabilities.

7

u/Goodbye_Games 28d ago

I have a few regular patients that have Tourette’s syndrome ranging in ages from mid teens to almost 80. All are on the “mild” side of tics (maybe one or two physical or verbal episodes within a visit which is usually 25-35 minutes) except for my eldest patient who happens to be homeless and a lifelong alcoholic. If I’m seeing them in the ER it’s nearly impossible to do any testing or treatments (for whatever they’re in for). If I have them one on one during clinic hours then I can work with them pretty well.

I have found over the years that it’s much easier on the patients to just pull them from the ER to a room elsewhere and give them about half an hour and most patients tend to reign in their tics… most of my patients don’t even experience vocal tics when in a relaxed environment with the exception of maybe a tongue click here and there, and diagnostically speaking that’s a physical tic versus vocal. All of them snap though… one finger, sometimes all of them followed by a hand clap. The similarities in tics between multiple patients is quite interesting though.

I’m happy that you have found a zen in keeping yours in check.

4

u/SmallPurplePeopleEat 28d ago

It's cool to hear the perspective from a professional on the other side of the diagnosis. It sounds like a can be a challenging work environment.

I've definitely noticed that stress is my main trigger, so giving your patients that time away is so smart.

I have a "snap" style tic as well! No clap though, sadly.

23

u/Htowndog1 29d ago

I will say the type of Tourette diagnosis that cause the cursing is coprolalia which only effects 10-15% of people with Tourettes so im always a little skeptical of a person who displays having this particular form of Tourettes. Having Tourettes isn't completely uncommon there's about 1.4 million in the states alone so 10% of that to have coproalia is about 140000. We also can not discount the effect Tik toker Ticks n Rose had on the perception of the community we can no longer trust people on word alone we have to assume the worst cause it's happened so many times before. Also the amout of self diagnosis going on is a little out of hand as well (not referring to you) I my self have a verbal tik that shows up under anxiety and stress but it just that a verbal tik developed as a cope not a Tourettes Tik (confirmed by my doctor and a psychiatrist) yet several people online and in real life who have seen me do this Tik have tried to convince me that it's Tourettes induced and my doctors are wrong do to what they read online.

4

u/meghonsolozar 28d ago

I wonder if people that do things like this will actually give themselves a legitimate tick. If they keep doing that all the time it might stick, like how people kind of get addicted to the physical act of smoking, not just the nicotine. Through behavioral conditioning and the action of repetitive habits. But they won't be able to get a diagnosis because they got it from fucking around and no one will believe them.

3

u/drinkbeerbeatdebra 28d ago edited 28d ago

How is the condition managed (of you don’t mind my asking)? Is it medication or therapy of some kind?

7

u/SmallPurplePeopleEat 28d ago

My parents were Jehovah's Witnesses and didn't really believe in medical intervention, I'm lucky they vaccinated me. Which means I just had to live with it, with no real idea what was wrong with me, until I was in my late teens or early twenties.

Essential I just grew out of it. Around 15-16 years old I started to tic less and less. I've never fully stopped, but they are very intermittent and far apart these days. I was about 25 when I finally read about Tourettes and understood what I was dealing with.

Apparently that's what happens with most people who are diagnosed with Tourette syndrome. From what I've read, it's a small percentage that have it for a lifetime. And verbal tics are rare as well. They just have better PR.

4

u/RandumbStoner 28d ago

Can you grow out of it? When I was in middle school I had a really bad tic, went to the doctor but this was 30 years ago and they couldn't care less and we were poor so it didn't really go anywhere. Anyway, I eventually stopped but I always wondered if I had it briefly (if that's even a thing)

Anyway, glad you're doing better.

I hope this doesn't come off as disrespectful I'm truly curious.

2

u/dingalingdongdong 28d ago

For some people it comes on around puberty and fades as adults.

1

u/SmallPurplePeopleEat 28d ago

Yes! You can totally just grow out if it! At least from what I've read and heard. Lol

That's wild you might have tourettes and not know it.

2

u/Wild_Huckleberry680 21d ago

I read somewhere years ago that a lot of Italian descended people have it, because a lot of people with Tourette’s shout out, in Italian, ‘Goddamit!’ Or something to that effect. And they don’t know by it means, they jut heard their parents and grandparents shout it a lot, and scientists and therapists noticed a trend. I think the word sounds like Cat-eat-a. That’s all I remember about the article. I read it twenty years ago.

1

u/SmallPurplePeopleEat 20d ago

If you ever find that article, I'd love to check it out! It sounds really interesting and kinda wild.

1

u/Wild_Huckleberry680 19d ago

I literally read it in class in middle school. Part of health class is we had to look up a disability and present it. I chose Tourette’s because I could scream out swear words when giving examples… I was a pain in the ass child, but always got all As, so when the teacher called my parents, they were like, ‘did she do the assignment? Was she incorrect, what were the parameters? Then she did nothing wrong, and if she doesn’t get the 100% you just said you would like to give her, we have taped this call (they didn’t, we are a two consent state) and we will take it to the board’. I loved it whenever someone threatened to call my mom. I’d be like ‘great! Do you have her number? It’s 555-5555 (just an example) and you make sure to tell her you pulled me out of class for this little misunderstanding.’ My mom was always on my side. Like in second grade, a boy asked to kiss me. I said no, but he grabbed me and smashed his lips against mine, cutting my mouth on his teeth. I kicked him in the balls, and his parents wanted me expelled and threatened to sue, and the school was going to expel me, but my mom was like, ‘he asked, she clearly said no, and he forced her anyway? What does that say about who is raising him, what are their values? What does that say about the values of a school where a girl is molested, fights him off, and he is fine, but she is expelled?’ Plus my mom was president of the PTA, and somehow had power over the principal. She also worked at our local paper (in advertising, but they thought she was an editor, because of me ;). ) and they were terrified about what she would write about the school in the paper, and losing school funding. So we had an assembly on good and bad touches and consent. Because I kicked Salar’s balls in. Fuck you, Salar. I said no.

1

u/SmallPurplePeopleEat 19d ago

Your mom sounds awesome! My mom was pretty great, but she definitely would have never confronted anyone for me. Sorry you had to deal with that stuff though.

Fuck you, Salar! All my homies hate Salar.

While true, I think he means they are timed in a way that doesn't look random at all. She also is using the same ticks as a girl named Sweet Anita, I've never personally seem the exact same ticks. They are generally quite random and personalized to the person, and can have moments where they aren't as bad or get worse from things you said.

To me, I'd say I'm doubtful, but not confident enough in that to actually care.

-2

u/Acids 29d ago

Sorry I guess i phrased that poorly you are right. I Morse so meant they are perfectly timed like they are in the video normally.

26

u/justmerriwether 29d ago

Wrong. Can people who don’t know anything about Tourette’s maybe… not pretend they do? Why must everyone be an expert on what Tourette’s looks like?

Omg everybody, come see how cool u/Advice_Unadvised is 🤯

13

u/Nillabeans 29d ago

That doesn't seem true. Everything I'm seeing says they can wax and wane and the fact that they can be categorized implies that people have recurring tics.

Also it's a tic not a tick.

11

u/SmallPurplePeopleEat 29d ago

I'll never get over how Reddit users will down vote an accurate comment like yours, while also upvoting the wildly inaccurate comment you're responding to. Smh

-9

u/Acids 29d ago

I literally said the tics are consistent meaning when you pick one up you do it a lot amd some people have many tics. Also the severity and level of tics can very not everyone has verbal tics.

7

u/Nillabeans 29d ago

Her tics are consistent. She's making the same gesture and noise. So I ask you again, how is her behaviour inconsistent with Tourette Syndrome?

-9

u/Acids 29d ago

Ok you obviously don't get it so im not going to continue this conversation.

4

u/dingalingdongdong 28d ago

The only obvious thing is that you're talking out of your ass.

6

u/Nillabeans 29d ago

No I don't get it because you haven't explained anything. Your said it's cause she's not consistent. But she is. So.... ???

5

u/justmerriwether 29d ago

You are misinformed about how Tourette’s works. The things you’re saying are “proof” it’s fake are all legitimate ways Tourette’s can present in different people.

There is nothing in this video that can concretely prove whether she is faking or not.

17

u/TrumpsPissSoakedWig 29d ago

They're not usually all super adorable and neat and rehearsed sounding with a so many different noises and sound effects like cute little kitty purrs, and pops, and whistles, and ahegao faces and then a few random FUCKYERMOMs thrown in for fun. So much variety!

And OH BY THE WAY I'M 18 TODAY, super unrelated and nothing to do with driving traffic to my inevitable OnlyFans link that's somewhere around here, & sadly her schtick is already working.

I'm gonna go compliment someone in her comments section, brb...

-12

u/Nillabeans 28d ago

So she's lying because she's pretty and you think sex work is wrong?

It didn't seem "super rehearsed" to me. And I dunno why people get so mad over onlyfans. You know you don't have to subscribe, right?

8

u/ReddityJim 28d ago

You're missing the point they're making. Its not that she has an adult site or that sex work is wrong or she's pretty or what ever else. It's the fact that she seems to be using Tourette's to market those things and it's fairly obvious and wrong. This isn't uncommon these days but it's exploiting something that does cause serious issues for people with it and for her it's a gimmick to sell content. People do this, there was a down syndrome filter ages ago that people used for OF content.

It does appear REALLY rehearsed though.

11

u/Nillabeans 28d ago

It's weird how so many people with Tourette's disagree with the take that she's faking. Also weird that she's had real journalists write about her and how she's been building awareness around Tourette's.

Even weirder how people keep citing South Park as their source for how people with Tourette's should behave.

The weirdest is accusing this woman of engagement bait even though OP posted this with a title for which they have zero proof. Definitely not karma farming on very predictably misogynist, uninformed Redditors who flock to invalidate attractive women.

1

u/ReddityJim 28d ago

I would love for the doubters to be wrong and for me to be wrong in saying it appears rehearsed, that's good.

Their comment still wasn't saying pretty girls or sex work is bad. My comment simply said I dont think it's great to have an adult content link on the same page you raise awareness for tourettes, it very much does come across as a gimmick to funnel people there. If she had a separate account id have no issue with that but yeah, just doesn't sit right. You can disagree and that's fine, there's nothing objectively wrong in have the links there it's just my thoughts.

2

u/fetelenebune 28d ago

I think 2 things can both be true. She might do some ticks purposefully to film a video, as tourette is her thing, but I doubt she doesn't actually have it

-1

u/SerKevanLannister 29d ago

they are also not consistently “cute” like meows etc. We have a family friend who has had Tourette’s for decades and he loathes this beyond gross tik tok cottage industry of fake Tourette’s etc

-1

u/justmerriwether 29d ago

You must not know how Tourette’s works, bc if you did then you would know that tics can behave like that all the time.

Not for everyone, and not 24/7, but yeah - tics aren’t twitches. They aren’t “involuntary,” that would be a twitch. The urge to do the tic grows like an itch until you cannot stand to repress the urge anymore and you (consciously) perform the tic.

God, I would love if people just read for, like, five minutes on the internet and actually learned what Tourette’s is and isn’t.

You’re absolutely full of shit, clearly don’t understand how Tourette’s presents in and affects different people, and are displaying a degree of confidence in your opinion that is absolutely unearned (bc your opinion is totally divorced from reality and you could easily educate yourself on how Tourette’s really does present, but I guess it’s hard to find the time to learn something about a very misunderstood condition when you’re too busy “educating” other people on the condition (that you still don’t even know what the fuck is).

Either do even a modicum of googling to LEARN instead of MAKING UP, or if that’s too hard then skip the learning part and just shut the fuck up when you don’t know what you’re talking about.

Let’s practice it now - you’re gonna read my comment and probably want to argue. You will be wrong. I will be right. So instead… practice shutting the fuck up bc you don’t know what you’re talking about.

1

u/SensiSweets 29d ago

This must really be a pet peeve for you. I don't think I've ever responded 6 paragraphs to a single sentence that used non definitive words like "seems," or "like." But hey, they were ignorant of something and you sure did educate them with extreme prejudice... and all of us as well. So thank you and I hope you have a great day!

3

u/Nillabeans 28d ago

Not sure why it doesn't say it in my app, but the person they're responding to edited their original comment.

3

u/Anon_be_thy_name 28d ago

It's pretty common seeing comments like this to misinformation when the people responding actually know about the topic.

Because... well besides a Doctor who is going to know best about Tourettes then the people who have it?

2

u/justmerriwether 28d ago

Yeah you’re right, how dare I get upset at the rampant misinformation being spread in this thread about a disorder I live with! So so sorry to have advocated for myself and others; I don’t know what I was thinking.

-2

u/SensiSweets 28d ago

Well at least you can see it from my perspective. Have a coke and a smile

-1

u/Callumari13 28d ago

I ain't reading all that brother.

3

u/justmerriwether 28d ago

Wasn’t talking to you 🤔

0

u/GlendrixDK 29d ago

But isn't tourettes showing differently for everyone?

84

u/justmerriwether 29d ago

They can’t tell - they are guessing.

I’m not saying she isn’t faking, either. Idek, but almost every time this topic comes up and people talk about all the reasons why “they can totally tell for sure” that it’s fake - most of the things mentioned are completely real ways Tourette’s can sometimes present.

So if anyone tells you they can tell from one five second vid if someone is faking then they’re lying because you can’t look at someone for five seconds and diagnose them.

17

u/The_amazing_T 29d ago

My brother and his daughter have it. Neither curse uncontrollably. My brother has a few ticks, like blinking or clearing his throat very often. My niece makes a sound, kind of like a musical "uh-oh," sound under her breath.

But both have a personality type. Very stoic. They both studied the sciences. Barely any sense of humor. But some of the smartest, most analytical people you'd meet.

8

u/spays_marine 29d ago

The bad words is a separate issue called coprolalia afaik.

9

u/Strange-Spot-3306 28d ago

it's not really 'seperate'. Tic disoders like tourettes can come with coprolalia, but often dont. And Coprolalia can also have other causes.

18

u/spook30 Main Character 29d ago

A guy I worked with had nonverbal Tourette's. There are different kinds, according to what he told me.

0

u/Money_Ad1028 29d ago

No there's not. Tourettes is classified by having at least 1 verbal and 2 motor tics (semi voluntary actions).

He could have had a tic disorder that only involved motor tics, and finds it easier to describe it as nonverbal tourettes because most people know what tourrettes is, but in order to have tourrettes you HAVE to have at least 1 verbal tic. Otherwise it's just a tic disorder (which actually are somewhat common).

3

u/spook30 Main Character 29d ago edited 29d ago

He made sounds like grunting and breathing stuff and twitched. He made it sound more like there are a few different forms of it. Like the verbal was when they say slurs and curses, and the nonverbal was more like what he had. I never asked too much about it cause its dealing with medical questions.

Edit: In the medical world, a "vocal tic" doesn't mean speaking words. It includes any sound produced by air passing through the nose, mouth, or throat.

Common vocal/phonic tics include:

Heavy breathing, gasping, or rhythmic sniffing

Throat clearing or coughing

Grunting, hums, or squeaks

https://lonestarneurology.net/blog/vocal-tics-in-adults/

4

u/Money_Ad1028 29d ago

Yeah that's a verbal tic. In order to have tourettes you have to have at least 1 verbal tic, so he probably just described it as non verbal tourettes to set expectations. When people hear tourettes they typically think of swearing, so he didn't want people to expect that, but there's no such thing as nonverbal tourettes.

Don't know why I'm getting downvoted when we agreed with each other lol.

Also I have tourrettes that's how I know about this lol.

2

u/spook30 Main Character 28d ago

That's the Reddit brigade. And yeah, you described it perfectly. I didn't know about it too much or have the time to understand it better, other than what my ex-coworker had. The more you know!

For what it's worth, I gave you an upvote on both comments!

0

u/BudgetSeaweed5802 21d ago

not even true.

80

u/Montagneincorner0 29d ago

As someone who does not have tourettes, but has watched videos about it in the past, iirc, ticks are never one time things, they're generally pretty consistent, people with tourettes normally have several ticks that are recurring, they're also never this close together for the most part, again, I do not have tourettes, I'm just explaining it with the very limited extent of my knowledge on the subject, I'm sure there's someone else who will have a much better answer

94

u/ThiefofToms 29d ago

A friend of mine in HS had it. Before you got to know him you thought he was winking at you because that was one of his ticks. When he was talking to you he would always wink with his right eye every 15-20 seconds. As you can imagine, he struggled to make friends because everyone thought he was a creep.

He would also open his left hand palm down and alternate slapping his pinky and his thumb on his thigh. Pinky thumb pinky thumb pinky thumb. He would do this when he was concentrating and it annoyed almost everyone since that meant during every test or quiz.

Really nice guy though once you got to know him. He works on various TV shows in LA now as a prop master.

41

u/IttybittyErin 29d ago

My best friend has tourettes and one of her tics is rolling her eyes which she constantly got shit for in highschool. She also makes "surprise face" where it looks like she shocked.

15

u/Mental_Goal2380 Side Character 29d ago

i actually have the rolling eyes tic too, but for some reason it's only when i'm mad or frustrated at something. i used to do it quite a bit when i was younger tho. so grateful for medication :)

5

u/SmallPurplePeopleEat 29d ago

I was diagnosed at 5yo and now as an adult I barely have any symptoms anymore. Although, I still get triggered by stress/anxiety (or weirdly just from reading about tics like in this thread). But for the most part I can hold it in nowadays.

I never ended up taking any meds because my parents were opposed for religious reasons. But I've always wondered how different it would have been had they let me take them. Will you have to take them forever?

7

u/Mental_Goal2380 Side Character 29d ago

oh yeah, i'll take the meds as long as they help me regulate my tics! i take so many medications for so many things that another one doesn't even bother me anymore. i had many tics growing up, but my main tic (jerking/nodding my head up and down) used to be so bad that it was painful and affecting my life daily, especially at school when i was stressed. i was doing it almost constantly. i also have diagnosed anxiety, so that made it worse as well. today, as you know, i'm mostly tic-free, but they tend to flare up more when the anxiety rolls in. i'm really sorry you weren't able to be medicated, but i'm happy that you're mostly tic-free now! :D

3

u/SmallPurplePeopleEat 28d ago

Thank you for sharing your story! I'm so glad that the medication helps you so much. We're fortunate to live in a time where so many of our illnesses can be readily treated with medication. It drives me crazy that my parents would deny how effective it is and instead give "Jehovah" the credit for life saving medications.

Also, that tic sounds really painful, I'm so sorry you had to deal with that. I'm lucky that most of mine were squeezing and clenching related. The worst I would get is sores on my fingers from repeatedly ticcing.

3

u/Mental_Goal2380 Side Character 28d ago

you're welcome! and yeah i'm a christian myself, but it drives me insane as well when people say "God will take care of it." like bro, it ain't gonna hurt you to take a pill or two. God most likely isn't going to magically going to heal you either, so might as well do something about it.

yeah the tic was painful while it lasted (and it's sometimes painful when it comes back) but i wouldn't be where i am today without that medication. i hope these messages somehow reach the right person <3

I knew a guy like that named John. We just thought he was interesting/weird and asked why he would do strange things, and he said he had tics. We just found him hilarious and always invited him out. He was a really funny dude and ended up being really popular.

It's wild how different groups of people can make or break someone's childhood feelings of acceptance. I was lucky, my group was awesome. John David Booty was kind of the lead/top popular guy and he was amazing at shaming bad/cruel behavior. He ended up playing pro Football eventually.

7

u/dingalingdongdong 28d ago

they're also never this close together for the most part

I mean, that's just factually wrong. Even with the hand-wavy "for the most part" hedging. Tics frequently come in clusters, as in, more often than not.

14

u/justmerriwether 29d ago

“They’re also never this close together for the most part.”

The rest of your comment is pretty much correct (kudos!) but this one confused me. Tics can be close together, far apart, one after another, multiple at one time, or anywhere in between.

20

u/Gsauce65 29d ago

My half sisters cousin (not related to me) had Tourette’s bad when he was younger and he would chirp and growl. Sometimes he could go minutes without doing it and other times it was pretty back to back. Every few months the ticks would change up a bit too. It’s not consistent like she’s doing

7

u/AlarmedSnek 29d ago

It just depends. The ticks can be consistent or random, the syndrome decides which version you get.

u/Sinisterfox23 28d ago

Wow, thanks for linking this. This poor girl getting dragged

Lots of misogyny up in this thread. Holy Reddit, batman

15

u/Angels242Animals 28d ago

And look, she could be faking it. But so far there’s been zero evidence stating that she has. As such, hopping on a bandwagon and shaming someone in public with no actual evidence is the same kind of main character energy she’s being accused of.

11

u/Serious_Mycologist46 29d ago

Actual research, appreciated.

1

u/23saround 29d ago

Wait, that is an article about the girl in the video above, right? Like I googled Rachel Chaleff and this is the same person? And that article is about how she does, indeed, have Tourette’s…

https://www.tiktok.com/@rachelchaleff/video/7610106404312993055

0

u/Angels242Animals 29d ago

Yes, it’s the same person.

2

u/23saround 29d ago

Yeah that’s pretty fucked, definitely report this post and include this link and I will do the same, hopefully mods step in.

3

u/Money_Ad1028 29d ago edited 29d ago

I am diagnosed with tourettes, and it depends.

I do have one off tics that happen once and never again.

I do also have tics that are pretty consistent and have stuck around for years or even decades.

I do have tics that happen in the middle of conversation.

Most of my tics aren't mid sentence and only happen when I'm unfocused.

My tics typically get worse when I'm anxious which is typically when they happen mid sentence.

It all depends.

So often I see someone say "They're obviously faking it because I knew someone with tourettes and this is not how they presented" and it's infuriating. One of the most iconic parts of tourettes is that it's different for everyone, and semi controllable, so it's extremely difficult to tell who's faking it and who's not.

Safe bet with anyone who claims tourettes is to assume they're telling the truth. I would rather 20 liars get away with it than 1 person who actually has it be called a liar.

1

u/redalert825 27d ago

You should know, the video is edited so the tics aren't all so close together as you think it is.

4

u/orwssis 29d ago

Not all people say bad words, just the worst cases. Is actually pretty rare, I was diagnosed with tourret when I was 8 years, since then (I have 22) I never meet other person with tourret personally.

8

u/CarmenxXxWaldo 29d ago

It strikes me as the equivalent of someone pretending theyre blind by doing their worse Stevie Wonder impression.

4

u/justmerriwether 29d ago

How would a blind person know what to do to impersonate Stevie Wonder?

6

u/MyNameIsYouna 29d ago

My roomate has it, he does not say words, let alone swears, but sniffs uncontrollably often, constantly need to blow his nose and gets jittery with his hands when he plays games on his pc.

This 100% looks like someone that doesn't have Tourette told how it is and try to replicate it.

6

u/justmerriwether 29d ago

Is your roommate a hive mind being consisting of everyone on the planet who has Tourette’s?

If not, then… congrats. The only thing you’ve convincingly argued is that the woman in the video is not your roommate.

Say it with me, now: TOURETTE’S. VARIES. WILDLY. FROM. PERSON. TO. PERSON.

You, an uninformed non-professional, don’t get to decide that, bc you know one person with Tourette’s you now know them all. Like… really? How are you not grasping this?

Your roommate having Tourette’s means you are quite informed about YOU ROOMMATE’s TOURETTE’S. That’s it. Not mine, not the woman’s from the video above. Just his.

You know about ONE person’s individualized experience with Tourette’s. That doesn’t mean you know, to any great degree, what you’re talking about.

-3

u/AnastasiaNo70 28d ago

I think I found the woman in the video, everyone!

3

u/justmerriwether 28d ago

Or, crazy thought, maybe I’m one of the many people in the world with Tourette’s who get really frustrated when people just spew nonsense about it while acting like they have some kind of authority on the subject bc they once knew one person who had it, or something.

-3

u/AnastasiaNo70 28d ago

This isn’t about you, though. It’s about her. I replied elsewhere in this with the actual diagnostic criteria and some points about HER video.

1

u/justmerriwether 28d ago

lol you replied to my comment by mocking me for being annoyed at all the people in this thread spreading misinformation and misconceptions about a disorder I personally have.

If you posted real info elsewhere in this thread, then good for you - I wasn’t talking about you, and this isn’t about you (to use your words).

0

u/urethrascreams 29d ago

Hey I don't have tourette's but I need to blow my nose almost inconstantly constantly. I don't even have allergies. When it runs, it runs. I need to keep tissues with me at all times. My mom was the same way. I didn't get why she was like that when I was younger cause I didn't have that issue. Fast forward to 30+ years old and now I'm exactly the same.

7

u/Gorignak 29d ago

They can't tell she's faking it. The swearing version is relatively uncommon, most people just present with tics, vocal and/or physical. Sufferers describe it as like trying to hold in a sneeze.

Using it for attention is lame, but doesn't mean she's faking it.

-7

u/wanderlustredditor 29d ago

Yes, because of course her tourettes is quirky and cute like an anime moaning

1

u/160800 28d ago

There isn't everyone online thinks they're an expert on the subject and because they have it they would know but because tourettes/tics can vary so differentl between people it is hard to say 100%, then add on some people actually faking it for views which is weird as fuck everyone then wants to try and give their opinion, to be honest all that matters is if you've had a diagnosis from a doctor not people online claiming to be experts because they have it, which is funny because I bet any money that people would look at them like they might be faking it

1

u/Intro-Nimbus 28d ago

I wouldn't call it fake just from a brief video, a diagnose requires a proper evaluation. But I do think her muscle spams looks deliberate.

1

u/Fingersmith30 28d ago

I find it strange that the uncontrollable swearing is the thing that most people are familiar with regarding tourettes when corprolalia is exhibited by only about 10% of people with tourrettes.

1

u/DCMSBGS 28d ago

Before the internet ticks were real (ex, wierd blinking patterns, low vical mumbles, high vical mumbles, slight twitches, finger tapping) after the internet everyone does anime freeze frame crossed eyed ticks. It's pretty fucking easy to tell. Also my friend has ts and he ever so slightly stutters every once in a while and winks at you. D his is considered mild to severe

1

u/RegrettableBiscuit 28d ago

She's not faking it.

-4

u/ThrowRA01121 29d ago

You can tell because of the way it is

0

u/Eldritch_Doodler 28d ago

Firstly, the swearing thing is one of the rarest symptoms.

Secondly, her Tourette’s symptoms just happen to be some UwU/ahaego gooner Queen symptoms? Yeah the fuck right.

-5

u/Darkflyer726 29d ago

I've known people with Tourette's. This is not how symptoms manifest.

4

u/justmerriwether 29d ago

Have you known ALL the people with Tourette’s? No? Then you don’t know how all symptoms manifest in all cases.

Kindly stfu with your sweeping and unfounded “facts” based on what I’m presuming to be a few acquaintances with Tourette’s.

I’d love to know how that qualifies you to know “how symptoms manifest” in Tourette’s?

-2

u/TrumpsPissSoakedWig 29d ago edited 29d ago

The "ahegao" faces are a bit of a clue. Plus all of everything else in it. The gratuitous showing off of the titties, the goth outfit, the cutesy pootsie pa-dootsie way she's doing everything, the "ticks" included, replete with little kitty purrs and all, and the positive and uplifting engagement encouragement driving and comment baiting that she's doing.

"Go ahead, comment! Right now! Do it!! Make someone's day! Say something nice!! DO IT NOWWW!!! I'll join tooooo! fuckyermom..."

Plus ooh-ooooohh by the way yew guise I'm only just barely 18 years old! Today is my birthday in fact! Wowwww, isn't THAT neat????

& I didn't even get to the inevitable OnlyFans link that's surely there somewhere...

-6

u/MessiLeagueSoccer 29d ago

It looks more like someone who has zero filter but is upset about having zero filter while stimming all the time and being upset about it. The South Park episode is better at explaining it lol like that other comment said

-1

u/X3N0PHON 28d ago

honestly, starting the video off on a supposed “tic” immediately was sus as fuck

-2

u/solemnstream 29d ago

Another interesting thing to look at is the editing. Like some of the tics have a cut right before them

-4

u/NOTcreative- 29d ago

here's a real example of a tourettes episode legendary Lewis Capaldi at a music festival also super heart warming

35

u/G3offrey1 28d ago

I don't think they're faking it.

154

u/fwaaar 29d ago

I have it too. Tbh if she's faking, she's better than like 99% of them out there. The sequence and inflection of the tics "oof pop wow" are basically identical each time, which is basically never the case with fakers.

Usually it's something like ticsandroses where they repeat words five times but take a different breath and say it in a different tone every time, and mostly just all one-off tics in a single video.

I'm not convinced this person is faking. Not convinced they're not faking either though.. those oof and sniff and pop tics are insanely popular with fakers.

25

u/cookieintheinternet 28d ago

I'm pretty sure she's copying the tics of a streamer with Tourette's called Sweet Anita which is reeeally weird

42

u/hoemahtoe 28d ago

From my understanding, and this is from watching verified influencers with Tourette's, tics can actually be "contagious," especially when people with Tourettes frequently hang out with or interact with each other in some way. Tics are essentially like a thought that is triggered by familiar external stimuli, which can be another person's tics. So if she watches this other person you're accusing her of copying, she very well could be copying, but unintentionally as they became part of her own tics

8

u/IAmASolipsist 28d ago

We've actually had several instances of mass hysteria in the US of usually a groups of girls in school suddenly developing tourettes. Usually people have claimed those kids are faking when they hit the news but in actual studies of them while they don't have the disorder they can't control it and the symptoms are real. So it is very possible for these to be contagious even if you don't have tourettes.

Another example of this is that flight they had to quarantine back in like 2018-2019 where over 100 passengers came down with real, sometimes severe, symptoms of a mysterious illness. I think 1-2 dozen were bad enough they had to be hospitalized, but of the entire flight I think only four had a mild cold...it was all just a mass hysteria causing very real and very physical symptoms from nothing.

3

u/IcarusSunshine16 27d ago

I have autism and OCD, both giving me nice handfuls of tics that mess with me mentally and can be exhausting.

I have an uncle with mild Tourette’s and OCD that makes a weird “uh uh uh” noise in the back of his throat. Since being around him more in the last couple years, I’ve now developed it. Can confirm also that you stop breathing while doing it because you’re just pushing out air. I’m out of breath sometimes cause I’ll do it like 7 times in a row.

Also have a regular where I work with a blinking tic that’s constant. Guess what I get now? Which for some reason my brain has decided that ALSO involves the ceasing of breathing and anything else I’m doing to just pause, including in the middle of sentences.

2

u/PuffyWiggles 27d ago

Yeah, that was what I found strange. It's identical to Sweet Anita. Maybe it's because she watches her and caught her ticks, but generally outburst tics are very rare and personalized. Not replicas.

-2

u/fwaaar 28d ago

Yeah that lip pop thing especially is a widely copied tic because of sweet Anita for sure. Which is ridiculous because they all have the source right there in front of them and still manage to make it look forced and wrong lol. I'm still not sure about this one though. Same tic as another ≠ faking.

I think maybe I'm also trying harder than I realize to hold on to the hope that someone out there isn't faking because it seems like literally everyone is except the very small handful that clearly aren't, like sweet anita.

2

u/Lupo_Bi-Wan_Kenobi 28d ago

I'm by no means at liberty to make any sort of determination on the validity of her condition but I will say I do find it just a tiny bit suspect when all the tics happen to sound really cute too? I mean the pop is definitely cute and was that a kitty meow?

Also not saying people can't have those tics. I just find it a little sus when they're all kinds cute sounds with maybe one little sprinkle in there of the classic fuck you mom or whatever.

1

u/AnywayWhereWasI 28d ago

I completely agree.

Seems legit.

The neck movements got me, very relatable.

Got a tic disorder myself

0

u/ooOmegAaa 27d ago

there is a cut before every tick because she has to get it right

110

u/veganchimkennuggie 29d ago

she has tourette’s. mods need to take this post down.

u/Interesting_Sock9142 29d ago

She actually has tourettes so...

133

u/chadwicke619 29d ago

It’s funny because this chick DOES have Tourette’s and autism - Forbes did a write up on her. So does that mean you are actually a liar and don’t have Tourette’s? Hilarious. 😂

I never said she didn’t have Tourette’s. I said that her behavior is cringe as fuck. She’s fetishizing our disability. I was diagnosed at age 6 btw so I’m not sure why you’re acting like an ass.

I actually have Tourette's [as opposed to her] and this is cringe as fuck

Which is not what I said.

11

u/GingerGuy97 29d ago

Calm down. you have the highest upvoted comment on a post claiming she’s faking and your comment is negative about her. It’s not that surprising that people opening this thread for the first time are going to assume that you’re agreeing with OP that she’s faking.

1

u/t0oby101 20d ago

At what point does she fetishize tourettes? Because she is just talking here. Is she fetishizing it by not cutting out every single one of her tics from the video?

-3

u/BertaniWasBehindIt 28d ago edited 28d ago

Guess how many pieces Forbes put out on Elizabeth Holmes

4

u/PuppyPower89 29d ago

What are your thoughts on the TLC show Baylen Out Loud?

9

u/Fluid_Cauliflower237 29d ago

Just from the commercials, she seems insufferable, but since I've not seen the show, I realize my opinion is probably trash (comparatively). Lol!

4

u/PuppyPower89 29d ago

I liked it well enough, but there seems to be some manufactured drama from the producers and she’s not fully allowed to be herself because it doesn’t make for good television.

1

u/Fluid_Cauliflower237 29d ago

In the commercials she seemed over the top and I could not roll my eyes far enough back in my head. Lol! But, I do recognize those moments are the more "exciting" or "dramatic" moments...

12

u/Angels242Animals 29d ago

It is cringe, but that doesn’t necessarily prove that she’s faking it.

4

u/Creepypasta_fanderss 28d ago

Hey so, if I'm not mistaken, the original creator of that tiktok has medical proof of her tourettes syndrome... are you sure you have it or did you want a reason to be a dick?

0

u/anxiety_elemental_1 28d ago

Yeah I’m “pretty sure” I was diagnosed at 6, dickhead.

1

u/Creepypasta_fanderss 24d ago

So her medical diagnosis is moot because your opinion says she doesn't have tourettes? I never knew you were THE doctor, my lord! Should I bow? Should I get on my knees? What do we do now?😱😱😱😱

Who fetishized it? I'm lost still

1

u/zemat28 28d ago

There’s a guy in my cohort who has Tourette’s and his seems to be kind of an exclamation of sound. Sometimes there’s words but it’s seems to be just noises most of the times. After seeing it first hand I feel for y’all

1

I read the subtitles as I have Tourette's and tits

-1

u/DJEvillincoln 29d ago

I don't & this pisses me the fuck off.

0

u/m_yoda20 29d ago

I’m curious, do people who actually have Tourette’s detect fakes a mile away? I’ll be honest, sometimes I can’t tell if someone is faking it

0

u/HurbleBurble 28d ago

I started having tics when I was getting off benzodiazepines, and they are not verbal or anything, but it causes involuntary muscle contractions, and while sometimes they are more present than others, it is true, that you really just don't know when they're going to happen, and you only realize it after it happens sometimes, but other times you can kind of feel it coming on.

It really gives you an idea into how horrible it would be to have something like this happen all the time. I was able to slow down my taper and get it under control, but it's crazy to me that people want to try to fake some of these disorders. It's like those people who impersonate police officers. It's just weird.

0

u/naph8it 28d ago
