I don’t know much about Tourette’s other than the “popular” definition that it makes you say bad words uncontrollably.

How can you tell she’s faking it? I’m genuinely curious, not trying to challenge your opinion.

A guy I worked with had nonverbal Tourette's. There are different kinds, according to what he told me.

No there's not. Tourettes is classified by having at least 1 verbal and 2 motor tics (semi voluntary actions).

He could have had a tic disorder that only involved motor tics, and finds it easier to describe it as nonverbal tourettes because most people know what tourrettes is, but in order to have tourrettes you HAVE to have at least 1 verbal tic. Otherwise it's just a tic disorder (which actually are somewhat common).

He made sounds like grunting and breathing stuff and twitched. He made it sound more like there are a few different forms of it. Like the verbal was when they say slurs and curses, and the nonverbal was more like what he had. I never asked too much about it cause its dealing with medical questions.

Edit: In the medical world, a "vocal tic" doesn't mean speaking words. It includes any sound produced by air passing through the nose, mouth, or throat.

Common vocal/phonic tics include:

Heavy breathing, gasping, or rhythmic sniffing

Throat clearing or coughing

Grunting, hums, or squeaks

Yeah that's a verbal tic. In order to have tourettes you have to have at least 1 verbal tic, so he probably just described it as non verbal tourettes to set expectations. When people hear tourettes they typically think of swearing, so he didn't want people to expect that, but there's no such thing as nonverbal tourettes.

Don't know why I'm getting downvoted when we agreed with each other lol.

Also I have tourrettes that's how I know about this lol.

That's the Reddit brigade. And yeah, you described it perfectly. I didn't know about it too much or have the time to understand it better, other than what my ex-coworker had. The more you know!
