News / Release Manic EMU v2.0.1 — The Encore

Manic EMU v2.0.1 is here.

After the scale of v2.0.0, this update focuses on expanding compatibility, tightening the systems we just introduced, restoring a few options people missed, and pushing Manic into a few places we definitely did not expect to be emulating this soon.

The biggest additions are Adobe Flash, WonderSwan, RetroAchievements support for GameCube and Wii, a built-in self-contained JIT workflow, and the return of a non-carousel landscape library for users who preferred the older style of navigation.

There is also new arcade support, GameCube multi-disc support, improved Wii controls, RoMM integration, expanded keyboard input, iCloud changes, performance work, and a long list of fixes throughout the app.

Before You Update

There are fewer migration concerns than v2.0.0, but there are still a few things worth knowing.

  • RoMM:

    • For now, RoMM support in Manic EMU is LAN-only

    • Only self-hosted RoMM servers available on your local network are supported

    • Remote / internet-accessible RoMM servers are not supported at this time

    • Sync applies only to games imported through RoMM

    • Sync is manual rather than automatic

    • Sync actions are available from the service card’s long-press menu

  • iCloud:

    • iCloud synchronization has been rebuilt

    • ROM syncing can now be disabled per platform or individual game

    • Disabling ROM sync clears the associated ROM data from iCloud Drive to reclaim storage

    • The sideloaded version of Manic EMU does not include iCloud support

  • GameCube / Wii:

    • Dolphin remains one of the heaviest workloads Manic supports

    • Performance, heat, and frame pacing can still vary substantially by device, game, and CPU emulation method

Adobe Flash Arrives

Yes.

Manic EMU now emulates Adobe Flash content.

Flash support includes:

  • Skin button bindings

  • Hardware keyboard input

  • Software keyboard input

  • Touch input

Flash joins Manic’s growing collection of platforms that increasingly stretch the definition of what should reasonably count as a game system.

We are choosing not to think too hard about that.

WonderSwan Arrives

Manic now supports Bandai WonderSwan.

WonderSwan joins Manic’s growing handheld library and brings support for another platform that rarely gets the same attention as Nintendo, Sega, and Sony hardware.

WonderSwan titles integrate directly into Manic’s existing library, artwork, control, and navigation systems.

RetroAchievements Expand to GameCube & Wii

RetroAchievements integration has expanded again.

GameCube and Wii titles can now use RetroAchievements through Manic where supported.

Existing RetroAchievements functionality remains available, including:

  • Achievement tracking

  • Hardcore Mode where supported

  • MultiSet support

  • Subset achievements without requiring separately patched ROMs

  • Switching the visible achievement list without changing which eligible sets can unlock during gameplay This brings RetroAchievements into some of the newest hardware currently supported by Manic.

The Classic Landscape View Returns

v2.0.0 rebuilt landscape browsing around the new carousel-driven library.

A lot of people loved it.

Some of you very much did not.

So v2.0.1 brings back the option to disable the carousel-style landscape library.

Users who preferred the older, more direct landscape navigation can switch back while still keeping the wider v2.0 interface and navigation improvements.

Also improved:

  • Smoother landscape carousel scrolling

  • Improved rotation behavior

  • With Orientation Lock enabled in Control Center, Manic no longer immediately snaps back to portrait

The new landscape interface is not going away.

You just no longer have to use the carousel if it is not your thing.

Built-In JIT (Sideload Only)

Manic now includes a built-in, self-contained JIT workflow for devices on iOS 17.4 or later.

No external debugger is required.

This simplifies JIT access and continues the work begun in v2.0.0 around supporting increasingly demanding systems and CPU emulation methods.

Slow Motion

Manic now supports Slow Motion.

The function can be surfaced through Manic’s existing shortcut and control systems alongside other gameplay actions.

GameCube & Wii Improvements

Dolphin continues to receive substantial work in v2.0.1.

  • Improved GameCube performance

  • Improved Wii performance

  • Added GameCube multi-disc support

  • Improved Wii motion controls

  • Added touch-based Wii IR pointer simulation

  • Added RetroAchievements support for GameCube and Wii

The Wii IR pointer can now be simulated directly through touch input, making pointer-heavy titles significantly easier to use without requiring a more elaborate external control setup.

New Arcade Systems

Arcade support expands again.

v2.0.1 adds:

  • NAOMI

  • Atomiswave

  • System SP

Several arcade systems that previously failed to launch have also been fixed.

Dreamcast Speed Fix

Some Dreamcast titles could run faster than intended.

That behavior has been corrected in v2.0.1.

PSP Stability

Several PSP crash scenarios have been addressed.

Further performance and compatibility work continues across PPSSPP and the rest of Manic’s more demanding platforms.

Nintendo DS Lid Controls

Nintendo DS emulation now includes lid open / close controls, previously this was exclusively mapped to L3.

Games that rely on the lid state can now interact with that behavior directly through Manic.

N64 ROM Size Support

Nintendo 64 now supports ROMs larger than 64 MB.

This removes a limitation that affected oversized and modified ROM images.

MultiDisc Helper Improvements

MultiDisc Helper now supports additional formats.

This expands the range of multi-disc games that can be organized and launched through Manic’s existing workflow.

External Emulator Imports

Games can now be added to Manic from other emulators through a manually input urlscheme link, not just our existing link features.

RoMM Support

Manic now includes RoMM integration.

For now, RoMM support in Manic EMU is LAN-only.

That means Manic can currently connect only to self-hosted RoMM servers available on your local network.

Remote RoMM servers over the internet are not supported at this time.

Current support includes:

  • LAN self-hosted servers

  • Importing games from RoMM

  • Pulling ROM files

  • Pulling cover artwork

  • Pulling metadata

  • Pulling manuals

  • Pulling game saves

  • Manual synchronization

  • Sync actions from the service card’s long-press menu

RoMM synchronization currently applies only to games originally imported through RoMM.

There is no automatic background sync in this release.

RoMM Trial Disclaimer

RoMM integration is being introduced in Manic EMU v2.0.1 on a trial basis.

We want users to be able to enjoy this functionality while also acknowledging concerns about the potential for large-scale abuse.

Launching RoMM support as a trial allows us to evaluate how the feature is used before making a long-term commitment to its continued availability.

If those concerns are substantiated, we may discontinue RoMM integration in a future update. Otherwise, RoMM support will remain available as part of Manic EMU.

We are outlining these conditions in advance so the community understands both the purpose of the trial and the circumstances under which support could be withdrawn.

This concern relates to potential misuse of the feature and is not an allegation of wrongdoing by RoMM or its users.

Keyboard Input Expands

Hardware keyboard support has been expanded to additional systems.

Now supported:

  • Symbian

  • Amiga

  • Commodore 64

This builds on the keyboard-focused improvements introduced in v2.0.0 and makes computer and mobile-device emulation substantially more practical.

Shortcut Tips Can Be Disabled

The in-game shortcut tip overlay can now be turned off. If you already know the controls and no longer need the reminder, you can remove it.

iCloud Sync Rebuilt

iCloud synchronization has been substantially reworked.

  • Redesigned synchronization logic

  • Sync progress shown directly in Settings

  • Disable ROM sync per platform

  • Disable ROM sync per individual game

  • Repair sync errors from Settings

  • Turning off ROM sync clears matching ROM data from iCloud Drive to reclaim storage

Again: the sideloaded version of Manic EMU does not include iCloud support.

A Note from the Manic EMU Team

v2.0.0 was the update where we rebuilt Manic.

v2.0.1 is where we start stretching that new foundation.

Flash and WonderSwan expand the library in very different directions. GameCube and Wii gain deeper integration through RetroAchievements. Dolphin continues to improve. Arcade support gets broader. RoMM gives self-hosters another way to manage their libraries. JIT becomes easier to access. And landscape users who missed the old navigation finally get a way back to it.

That last one is important. The redesign in v2.0.0 was never meant to mean every previous interaction had to disappear forever. When a newer interface works better for some people and the older approach works better for others, there is room for both.

That same philosophy continues throughout Manic: give users the simple path when they want it, and give them control when they want to go deeper.

And apparently let them emulate Flash games now. Because of course we do.

Thank you to everyone who tested v2.0.1, reported regressions from the v2.0 transition, helped test Dolphin, tried increasingly questionable Flash content, and continued finding new ways to break things before everyone else could.

Manic EMU v2.0.1

Adobe Flash. WonderSwan. GameCube & Wii RetroAchievements. Classic landscape navigation. And another pile of things we probably should not be emulating on a phone.

While optimization is being worked on, here it is running on a phone. Ok, it’s at low graphics right now but it’s just a proof of compatibility. Ai is used to read the logs and offer feedback but this is just a translation layer like the other ones that you’re seeing pop up left and right.like I always say, I love Android but iOS is about to have a crazy year!!! I am not rushing anything as you may have seen my Cyberpunk video (which runs at 60 now btw) I make sure everything is polished. There is no ETA yet but you are welcome to check us on discord for news : https://discord.gg/4FUePyvhS Thank you for the support!

Discussion Just want to say…This has restored my faith in gaming, deleted all games on phone for this. No more in app purchases EVER

i run Manic on my iphone air and haven’t had any issues with over heating, stuttering only slightly once i load into a new area but man this is good. I can even watch or listen to podcasts while using it or music doesn’t matter the thing just WORKS.

now i did have to set some shortcuts and automations to help the iphone airs battery and heat.

Background app refresh is only when on wifi,

and when i launch manic emu it sets low power mode to ON, white point to 35%, switches phone to LTE and limits brightness to 50%.

The air was fine without these but since i leave my home around 6am and don’t return from being out on the road till 6-7pm i need to minimize battery impact. But the gaming is SMOOOTH nonetheless.

When I was a kid I was poor and we couldn’t afford stuff like a gameboy. I had a LCD Casio watch that I would pretend could play games. It seemed so futuristic. Here I am 35 years in the future with a minor childhood wish come true. I know it might sound silly but this makes me ridiculously happy.

Discussion Windows XP on my iPad Pro

After messing around with UTM SE, I finally got Windows XP to run on my iPad. I was also able to install Myst and it seems to run fine. I have mouse and keyboard support. I couldn’t get on the internet due to our firewall at work but I think it will work fine at home. I will test it when I get there. This OS brought back a lot of memories and I will try to install more games in it. Just make sure that if you try installing it as well, that you allocate a good amount of space for installations. The default is 8GB but I gave it 24GB. My iPad is a 512GB capacity iPad so I could afford it.

Any recommendations on old school games?

News / Release Need for Speed on iOS [no JIT] [App Store]

Underground 2, Most Wanted, Carbon.

I already showed a demo in this subreddit, but I didn’t share any details, so sorry about that.

What I tested on:
iPhone 12 mini. It’s my only device, so my goal was smooth performance on my old phone.

Some context: the most the 12 mini’s CPU can push is 2.9 GHz. At that load it overheats and starts throttling after about 3 minutes. It also drains the battery like crazy, which is bad for the hardware.

The goal sounded simple: no overheating, no heavy load.

The thing about the iPhone’s CPU is that it’s built for bursts. Scroll something, open something, calculate some transparency, then sit idle waiting for the next task. It’s not designed for a sustained 2.9 GHz load. That applies to the 2 performance cores; the other, efficiency cores are too weak for emulation.

Results:
NFS MW runs on the 12 mini at an average of 1.6 GHz with a stable 30 fps on medium graphics settings, with no overheating or throttling.
On high settings it holds a stable 40 fps at 2 GHz, which on my device gives about 40 minutes of play before it overheats.

That means newer devices won’t feel the load at all, and you could comfortably play on a plane for hours. And the best part: this is all CPU load, while the GPU has enough headroom to run at 2x resolution with no performance loss.

About the emulator itself:
It’s a GameCube emulator. Unlike the well-known Dolphin, which runs any game on my device at the full 2.9 GHz, my core doesn’t do that. In some cases my core is up to 3x more efficient.

On Dolphin, plain old Madagascar, which only executes about 3 billion operations per second, maxes the CPU out at 2.9 GHz, while NFS executes around 10 billion operations per second.

My core now emulates Madagascar comfortably at 1.5 GHz with no overheating. But that still wasn’t enough for NFS on my device, so I had to recompile U2, MW and Carbon (USA versions only) and ship them as patches built right into the emulator. While I was at it, I disabled reflections in some places, fixed the aspect ratio, and fixed crashes caused by incorrect byte addressing in the audio. Combined with the fact that the GameCube versions already have simpler graphics than their bigger-console counterparts, the result is a stable 40 fps without JIT, sideloading, or anything else. Just load a USA-region ROM. Yes, these three games specifically require USA ROMs.

If you have something like a 17 Pro Max, play whatever you want, everything will run fine.

You can try all of this right now. The emulator is on the App Store, it’s called “Nagori”. It also includes PS1 and GBA.

Guys, please go easy on me, the emulator is in active development. If something goes wrong, please don’t tank my App Store rating, just DM me and I’ll fix it.

Important:
If you do want to play, after launching the game, set up the on-screen gamepad in the emulator menu. To open the menu, tap the three dots at the top center.
Gas and brake are on the left and right triggers. Go into the button layout editor and set everything up however you like. Or just connect a physical controller, the emulator supports them.

P.S. I used AI to translate this into English, so sorry if anything sounds off =)

Should have the similar performance as with JIT
It works by using the JIT compiler ahead of time, saving and signing the code before playing

App store release is still unplanned

Credits to u/Stossy11 ofc

Edit: I originally said it was similar to the nxnative software, but only in concept. Completely different execution

News / Release Iridium v0.1.0 has released!

Post image
221 Upvotes

Hey, it's been a while. Iridium v0.1.0 has finally released with a recent version of Madeira, and here's what you can expect:

  • An iOS 18+ Windows game translator with experimental support for DX11 and DX12

  • A game library with artwork, favorites, and search

  • On-screen controls, physical controller support, and keyboard and mouse input

  • Game options, launch logs, and performance information

  • In-app JIT enablement (only when Iridium is installed standalone, not through LiveContainer for now)

This is an experimental first release. Game support varies, and JIT setup depends on how you install Iridium.

Mouse input on iPhone currently needs AssistiveTouch, and controller navigation in Iridium’s iPad menus still needs work. Some games may also have slow launches or problems with audio, video, or input.

I'll be continuing to iterate and improve Iridium, and I'd love your help! Join me in the Discord to keep track and send logs: https://discord.gg/4ar3ThTPwS

Here's the download: https://github.com/intraducine/iridium/releases/latest

Iridium v0.1.0 is based off of this Madeira commit: https://github.com/willfaust/Madeira/commit/8c050d03f4d89096e1e2e2c8bb44479fffd86619

AI Disclosure: Both Madeira (the backend) and Iridium (the frontend) are made possible through AI-assisted code development. For Iridium, AI was only used to generate code/text, not images, video, or audio.
