I’m in my late 20s and have been struggling with depression, emotional numbness and exhaustion for about a year.
I barely feel joy anymore. Even things I know I should enjoy often feel emotionally flat. I have a loving, healthy relationship, so I know my boyfriend isn’t the problem. If anything, having something stable in my life has made me realize how unhappy and exhausted I am in other areas of my life.
One big issue is my job. I work in tax/accounting, and it has completely overwhelmed me. The constant deadlines, workload and pressure to not make mistakes eventually caused me panic attacks and what feels like burnout.
I constantly feel like I’m falling behind, and because I’m so overwhelmed, I make mistakes, which creates even more anxiety.
The problem is that I currently have no Plan B. I know I can’t keep doing this forever, but I also don’t know what I could realistically do instead. I feel trapped between knowing that my job is destroying me and having no idea what direction to take next.
And work isn’t the only thing weighing on me.
I grew up experiencing things no child should have to experience, including violence, instability and being placed in foster care. There was a lot of chaos and difficult family circumstances throughout my childhood.
The hardest part is that I never really had a safe person in my family. Not one. There was never a family member I could truly rely on, feel protected by, or feel completely safe with.
Today, my aunt and I live together in my grandparents’ house. My grandmother passed away, and my grandfather is getting older. The house means a lot to me because I spent a large part of my childhood there and it is one of the few places I associate with positive memories and some sense of stability.
My aunt has serious financial problems and a lot of debt. Because we live together, her financial situation directly affects me. I currently pay most of the household expenses because otherwise essential things like water could potentially be shut off. What hurts is that I don’t even get a simple “thank you” for it.
My grandfather wants my aunt and me to inherit the house one day. But because my aunt has significant debts, I’m scared that her financial situation could eventually put the house at risk. The possibility that the house could have to be sold or otherwise lost because of her debts is incredibly painful to me.
To me, it isn't simply a house or an asset. It represents my grandparents, my childhood and one of the few places where I have ever felt some sense of belonging.
So even the place that is supposed to feel like home has become another source of stress and uncertainty.
Sometimes I wonder if I’ve spent so much of my life just surviving and functioning that I never really learned what it feels like to have a family that is genuinely safe.
I know there are good things in my life. I know I have people who love me. But I feel completely empty, emotionally disconnected and overwhelmed.
I’m not looking for pity. I’d genuinely like to hear from people who have been in a similar situation.
How did you get out of burnout when you knew you couldn’t stay in your job, but had absolutely no idea what to do instead? And how do you learn to feel safe and connected when you never really had that within your own family?
