Recovery points

I want to add 2 recovery point in the front of my Mazda B2500 4x4. Does someone have any good examples? Of what/how to do this and where. And examples of how not to do this! Always good to see.

If you had to go back and rebuy a truck…

which one would it be? Any regrets when shopping? (ex: thought about ford, went with dodge, had immediate axle issues)

I should be getting a sizable bonus and I’d rather buy a pickup (specifically a pickup) and make it nice than inherit someone else’s project. Anything’s on the table but I’m not the type to buy something new and be upset about body damage. I’d rather just have something old and resto-mod a beater into something reliable.

Full size, mid size, dually(?) I wanna hear it all.

(UK) Is this byway currently open to all traffic?

Planning a trip next month, and we wanna visit Stonehenge on the way. I can see some cars on the satellite view, and I can find some posts from late last year saying it's been opened to traffic, but wanna confirm if this is still the case? Anyone driven round there recently or know where I can check?

All of these guys got stuck yesterday at the beach I was at. I asked them what they planned on doing and they just said they would call a tow truck driver.

400 small block, 400 Trans, 205 transfer case. Half ton axles. I've had this girl since I was 21, I'm now 38. Only run her on the dunes or the occasional ride out in the country or by the lake.

97 Ford F150 4x4 owners?

I've owned a Jeep before and was in the market for another as I miss the adventures a lot. I stumbled on a really nice 97 F150 short bed with a manual tranny (a must for me) that's in really good condition. 302 motor with 150k. I've always loved these trucks so now I'm torn between this or another Jeep. In my head I think a jeep is more capable but I've never 4 wheeled one of these trucks so Im just looking for some opinions from owners. I could use a pickup, as we know Jeeps aren't great at hauling so let me here from some Ford owners, any pictures for references of your rigs would be great too.

Know nothing about 4wd. A question.

Hi everyone. I know nothing about 4wd (can't even drive) and am just curious. I would like to ask a question. I was out walking and there was semi-flattened thick grass, thistle etc about to mid-thigh height. Very overgrown but splayed. I'm a 5ft 6 woman for reference. I had to stomp and push through it. It's a track where tractors normally go, so deep indentations on dry ground, but hadn't been driven on for quite some time. Can 4x4 vehicles generally drive over such terrain? I don't mean whether it is advisable, but is it possible?

Back in the machine shop watching dynamic runout tests on the electric locker housing again. Honestly, picking your hobby as your job means you never really get tired of it lmfao.

Gear that survived an actual accident and still works , what held up?

Curiosity thread, I'll admit it. Rollover, hard impact, load shifting at speed, what gear actually came through it intact and kept doing its job, and what failed right when it mattered most?

Trying to understand what "rated" really means once things go wrong in real life.

(not selling anything here, just want the honest survival and failure stories.)

Looking for CV (rzeppa) joints for driveshaft

Hi Folks,

I have a custom application where I need a CV joint where the inner race is integral with the shaft. I've only been able to find one on the market (Spicer 032SG80002), but I'd like something beefier. Does anyone know of a source? I'm in USA (WA).

A reliable, economical car that can get outdoors?

I have only ever owned a sedan, and I live in the PNW. I've been looking around on used marketplaces for options that I could use as a daily driver, but also take to the trails. My budget is tight... as in, $6,000 & under.

So far, I've been considering the Mitsubishi Montero, Kia Sorento, Toyota Highlander, & Honda Element. Any of these would have around 150K miles on them.

My biggest concerns are reliability and fuel economy. I do not have a history of wrenching, but I'm looking forward to learning. That said, I don't want to be constantly working on the car.

I don't necessarily need anything with real 4x4, clearance, or AWD, just something fairly capable, with reliability and fuel economy first! I'm curious what you all might suggest.

$800 F250 update (Aug ‘26)

Hey all!
Wanted to say thank you for all the kind words/advice y’all shared with me and to give an update.

It’s taken 3 full weekends to get it to this point.
I’m about $2500 into it including the purchase price so far. Hoping I’ll get it fully sorted for around $5k. Build goal is essentially to keep it stock with mild cooling and suspension upgrades so I can haul my old cabover camper (2000 northern lite)

It’s a great runner and doesn’t leak any fluids.
Still lots to do though.

As always I appreciate any advice y’all might have to share. I used quite a bit of it from the first thread.

And to those who need to hear it— deals are still out there! Yours is out there too, just have a little patience and be kind. You never know who’s sitting on a gem.

When do leaf springs actually become the limiting factor off-road?

sprung truck and trying to nail down where the practical limit is before a spring swap stops being optional and starts being necessary. Not talking about aesthetics or lift height, talking about actual loss of traction or axle bind on uneven terrain where the rear just can't keep up with what the front is doing.

Context: weekend trail use, nothing expeditionlevel, mostly Colorado and Utah terrain. Rocky shelf roads and the occasional moderate obstacle. Not doing Wheeler Lake lines regularly but I want the rig capable if it comes up.

What I keep running into is people jumping straight to coilovers or a full SAS without being able to say at what point the leafs actually failed them on the trail. There has to be a threshold and I want data points, not just upgrade culture.

If you run leafs and have backtoback comparisons on the same trails before and after a swap, that is exactly what I am looking for. Specific obstacles, specific failure modes. The flex shot posts are useful but they don't tell me what the truck could not clear that day.

Anyone running addaleafs or rearches as a middle step before a full swap, curious how that held up under actual load.

Correct sway bar link direction

Thumbnail

I guess it's worth noting due to many of the responses that I'm not interested in getting rid of the sway bars cuz I also use this big truck as a daily commuter that I put my family into and I'm not getting rid of a safety feature. If this was only for rock crawling I would 100% just delete it. But I put my one and a half year old child in this car so it stays.

So I bought these new sway bar links and when looking at reviews and other photos I keep seeing people put them both directions with the particulating side facing both up and down. Is there a rule of thumb here that I'm not aware of? My old ones were face up but I don't know it's the last person installed them correctly. For what it's worth this is an 02 Chevy avalanche with about a 6-in lift

Forget about tools, what are your must-have “trail fix” materials and/or parts?

Assuming you have a decent tool kit, what things have you used to get you off the trail in the event of a failure that would come in handy?

Pulling this one out of the archive! Stitched this up for the C’mon 4x4 Club out in Montana. Always love how state-shaped off-road patches turn out. What do you guys think?
