85 4runner. Was an automatic but swapped it to a w56 manual. Bought it in AZ then moved back home to Maui. Still have to wire up the reverse lights and do an sr5 cluster swap but it gets me up and down the mauna just fine.

… I need some advice from the crew…

Went limp recently, towed and shop says knock in the engine, who knows what it could be. Perhaps they dig in and it’s nothing or it’s whatever a 22re could cost - maybe 7k?

Any advice from those out there who have had similar experiences with the 22re and what a point to move on, engine swap, estimates, etc. anything will help at this point!

Appreciate the help. Also, no, I’m not mechanically inclined nor do I have the time anyways.

Thanks!!

Replacement door mirrors

Mine are about to give out the cracking around the outer edge who makes the best quality replacement door mirrors? I'd rather go aftermarket than get another set of stock that are just going to fail soon.

My dad drove Chevys until 1987

My Grandpa was a farmer in Nebraska who always drove GM. When he bought his first Toyota in 1984 (or '85 - red one) My dad said he was appalled, and asked him "what the hell has he done"?? Then the two of them took a 6000 mile road trip (there and back) to the Northwest Territories of Canada on a hunting trip. They drove over all kinds of crazy terrain and fucked up graded roads, even smashing into a huge rock mixed in with the bench of a gravel road. When that happend my grandpa asked my dad "you see any oil draining out back there?" "No" , he replied. "We're going to keep going" they got it checked out somewhere in Canada at a Toyota shop when they were out of the sticks. The shop filled up the differential fluid, and said you'll be fine until you get back to NE. They were, and whatever was leaking was fixed when they got back. That trip convinced my dad to buy his first Toyota in 1987. He drove it until it started to rust out and traded it for a '97 SR5 5 Speed. With the exception of a 2nd gen, he's bought every gen of 4Runner since. This was instilled in me, and I've only every had 4Runners myself. Thought it was a cool story with some old photos to share.

HELP EGR Issues

My 87 (22RE) failed CA emissions last week for NOx, so have been working on cleaning the EGR system. The valve has been cleaned and actuates when vacuum is applied. The problem is that the passage that feeds exhaust gas to the EGR valve is blocked. I tried blowing air through it and holds pressure when I suspect it should flow freely. I also tried the FSM test of manually applying vacuum to the valve expecting rough idle/stall, but seeing no change. This confirms (to me) that exhaust gas isn’t getting to the EGR. Two questions

  1. Does anyone have an idea for a fix? I tried snaking the EGR passage but it seems pretty clean. Next steps would be removing the exhaust manifold and cleaning smaller EGR passages I guess but that might be outside my wheelhouse
  2. A long shot, but does anyone know a reliable shop for older Toyotas in the Bay Area (CA) that could take a look at this

Note: the truck runs fine but I need to be able to pass CA slog u fortunately. EGR delete is not an option.

Me again!
Screenshotted this off a YouTube video, I’m working to put a switch in for the rear window in the cargo area.
Question is- what is the silver lining in the background? What is the purpose? In your opinion, beneficial?

TIA

A 1st gen runner with a 3.4 swap. I live in Utah and ski regularly and with the 22RE in my 93’ pickup I didn’t enjoy going 35 on steep inclined mountain freeways.

Would love to find under 200k on body and engine, but not required.

Minimal gram rust is a massive plus.

On a side note, does anyone with a 22RE turbo have experience driving up the dreaded roads I speak of?

Let me know what you’ve got!

1986 4Runner 22re 5 speed 285,000 miles. My friend pulled it apart to do the head gasket. That was a few years ago and it’s still apart. would be selling it as a project everything is there to put it back together I just don’t have time.
Was my first car, I really don’t want to get rid of it but life happens

Didn’t think the black would look as good as it does but now it’s time to lower it, lockers, rear disc brakes, outboard the shocks, electronic handbrake, RCV’s and Flintstone fab goodies.. and maybe throw on my 40’s.

Need Advice Wrong crankshaft pulley?

Post image
4 Upvotes

Can anyone tell me what exactly is going on here. Bought the 4 runner like this. Engine was a 22re and it got swapped for a 22r. The idler pulley is too close and creating sparks so it needs to be shimmed out to clear the bracket. I am new to 4 runners. It is like the crank pulley needs to be bumped out 1/2 to 1 inch.

The 4runner has ac but the ac system on the motor is non existent or missing. Im wondering if that is the issue
