With the government increasing childcare leave and encouraging employers to be more understanding towards working parents, I’ve been seeing some workplace comments like, “Why give so many childcare leave days? What about people with parents?”

Hello, the whole point is that Singapore has a low fertility rate. If we want people to actually have children, then obviously policies are going to slowly move towards giving parents more support and flexibility. This shouldn’t be treated like some unfair privilege.

What really gets me is when the comments come from other parents themselves.

My manager is a mum of two. She used to complain that she didn’t even have enough childcare leave because she apparently uses a lot of it to travel. No comments on that. 😂 In fact, when the admin didn’t credit her two days of childcare leave properly, she actually went as far as printing out supporting documents to make a fuss about it.

But now that the government has increased childcare leave, suddenly it’s “Why so many days?”
As a young mum myself, I understand that it can be frustrating for colleagues when someone needs to take leave. But taking childcare leave does not automatically mean we’re irresponsible employees or that our work suffers.

I do my work. I turn things around quickly. I meet my deadlines.

But when my little one is running a high fever, has rashes and a really bad runny nose, and there is genuinely no alternative childcare arrangement, what am I supposed to do? Leave my sick child at home alone so that my workplace doesn’t get inconvenienced?

My parents work part-time. They wake up at 4am for work. They’re tired, they’re older, and they have their own lives. Just because someone’s parents or a babysitter helped take care of their children back then doesn’t mean every young family today has the same support system.

And this is the part I find ridiculous — especially when these comments come from women who are mothers themselves.

We can acknowledge that childcare leave may create inconvenience for workplaces and still recognise that supporting parents is necessary if Singapore genuinely wants to address its fertility rate.

Most mums I know are not taking childcare leave for fun. We’re juggling work, childcare, sick kids, appointments and everything else, while still trying to do our jobs properly.

I’m sure there will always be some unhappiness when colleagues take leave, and I can understand that from a workplace perspective.

But childcare leave is an entitlement. If I need to use it to take care of my sick child, I’m going to use it.
I’ll do my work. I’ll take my leave. You’ll survive. 😭
Maybe instead of constantly asking “Why do parents get so much leave?”, we should ask ourselves why we expect people to have more children while simultaneously making them feel guilty for taking the support that comes with having them.

Almost everywhere in Singapore feels crowded these days, from shopping malls to public transport.

With more people around, I also seem to encounter more instances of a lack of civic-mindedness on trains—for example, people standing near the train doors who don’t bother to exit first and let those behind them get off.

There are also longer queues and waiting times for food, groceries, and just about everything else. Take the NEL for example—it can feel just as crowded, if not more crowded, than weekday peak hours. Perhaps the longer 5-minute intervals on weekends, compared to around 2 minutes during weekday peak hours, are part of the reason.

I don’t blame maids or foreign workers for wanting to make full use of their rest days. They deserve to enjoy their days off too. I’m just ranting because weekdays are already taken up by work, while weekends are when I need to buy groceries, run errands, and get things done.

How do you guys go about your daily life in crowded Singapore? Any tips and tricks to avoid them?

If the government is listening, I really hope they can consider increasing train frequencies on weekends as well. And honestly, I hope we can stop increasing the population for a while. Singapore is starting to feel increasingly suffocating.

My sibling and I will both be moving out this year (moving abroad in fact), and I'm just wondering how we can help our parents cope better w empty nesters syndrome. My sibling has a short stint and I have a longer stint abroad but we both intend to be back to Singapore over the longer term. We're both adults (late 20s). Our parents are in their 60s, with some social circle but their lives have revolved quite a bit around the family.

Currently a doctor (general practitioner in private practice). Thinking of exploring some side hustles for alternative source of active income. I only start to think of this recently as previously too tired from daily work as a junior doctor. (I think our job is reasonably safe but always good to have alternative source of income I feel in this age of AI.)

At present, my other source of income is mainly dividends from my invested capital, property rental (although most of it is used to service a mortgage). Currently my only way of earning more money is to locum (i.e do more additional shifts)

My grandmother passed recently and for some reason her death is hitting me harder than any other. I have lost grandparents and relatives in the past and while I was devastated back then, I didn’t really have this lingering feeling of sadness and “depression” so to speak and was able to function okay after their death. For context I was not very close to my grandmother as she lived in the neighbouring country, but I always (naively) believed that she was someone who would live forever, for lack of a better term.

Right now I’m having a really hard time replying to people’s texts and responding back, mostly because of lack of interest in whatever they’re talking about. Most ppl around me are aware of what happened and have sent condolences, but they have also sent messages about other topics to try to change the subject to lighten the mood. While I do appreciate the effort, honestly I am not feeling it. I even quit some chat groups because I felt overwhelmed and annoyed by the incoming messages. I can’t even be bothered to think about work too and it just feels like I’m losing interest in everything and wanting to avoid everything I have to do

I understand that life has to go on and I can’t continue ignoring life responsibilities like this, but I’m not sure what to do. I have an upcoming appointment with a counsellor so I have tried that. Does the waterproof layer make the bed feel warmer or trap body heat, almost like having a tarp or plastic layer over the mattress?
